I assumed it was some kind of rank or decoration, but I never quite knew what it was exactly. Thanks for the reply!

*sigh* That Medic in the second picture with the beard...  :-\

Facial hair like that was very rare on GIs. Not saying it didn't happen, but not often. It was against regulations, specifically because it could interfere with the proper sealing of a gasmask. Even in a prolonged combat situation, a "fuller" beard would be more common rather than one shaved in a particular style.
Aside from that, they just weren't the style in the 1940s.

Riddlez is of the opinion that those men on the second picture quite have the stereotypical 'German Soldier' look about them.

Riddlez loves it.
Probably one of the very few old-timers here who hasn't been a regimental leader.

König, have you perhaps considered that that man is not in fact a soldier and only pretends to be one occasionally. It's somewhat unfair to expect him to adhere to strict military regulation.

I suspect nobody complains about guys wearing historically inaccurate deodorant.

Then again, anyone who re-enacts to be a hussar or grenadier and doesn't wear a moustache should be kicked in the grill.

Beards can grow back. If you're going to play the part you should, when at all possible and within reason, try and look the part. Besides, if you're willing to spend lots of money on a uniform and other equipment, why detract from it with something easy to change like a beard?

There is no regiment in the UK that will let 14 year olds fire a musket I'm afraid because its the law....you can either be a musician or be in the line with a dummy musket.

Here's the Napoleonic Association page for you to look at regiments in the UK, pick one that's close to London if you like though it doesn't matter much where a unit is based.
