Battle Cry of Freedom FAQ

Where do I go to donate?
We are extremely thankful to all the donators we have had over the years. You have helped us a lot and your support over the years means a lot to us. However we have decided to no longer accept donations.

How much will the game cost?
We promise that the game won't cost more than 25 Euros. There is no definite price set yet though.

What is Flying Squirrel Entertainment?
We are a small four man team, all of which are former modders, skilled in all aspects of game development. We are from all around Europe, and formed FSE when we decided to start making our own games instead of spending our skills tweaking other people’s creations. As we come from a gaming background, we are very passionate about what we create, as we intend to play the games we create!

Didn’t you guys already make a game?
We created an expansion to the well known title "Mount & Blade Warband", which actually started out as a modification we had been working on for just over a year beforehand. The expansion was very successful and has to date sold over 200, 000 units. If you wish to try the game for yourself head over here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/48705/

What is "Battle Cry of Freedom"?
That is a very big question, but put simply "Battle Cry of Freedom" follows our vision of simulating huge historical battles where the player can put himself in any role from your normal infantryman up to the Generals commanding armies, with every place in between including artillerymen, engineers and cavalry. This game is going to be bigger, both in map size and player count, better in visual and gameplay, and contain even more unique and original features that we have been known to produce. We will be keeping our core gameplay completely based on player skill, with no reliance on random systems or leveling. Our combat system will feature a fun, intuitive and brutal reaction based system. Basically it will be Bigger, Better and More.

Define “huge multiplayer battles”?
We have created our own new and original network engine using the latest technology, and we are using it in combination with the latest Unity game engine. This means we have what we think is very probably the most efficient multiplayer support ever seen. This means our game will be able to support over 200 players battling on 2 X 2 KM maps. Two Hundred is our pre-alpha number, and is what we aim our game will support at the very least, really the number is dictated by what a server and client can handle and we will try to push it as high as possible.

Won’t that many players mean the game is unplayable due to fps and server lag?
Our game as a multiplayer title will be 100% optimised for high performance online battles. We have a fantastic engine, utilising culling (not rendering things a player cannot see) LOD and scaling server technology, so a standard server will run a few hundred players, while a powerful box is only limited by its power, we have yet to find the games limit, and is something we will be testing in our alpha and beta.

Why did you pick the American Civil War?
We are very experienced in developing a game within the era of the musket, yet we wanted to try something challenging and new, the American civil war is an incredibly interesting period which is also the last major conflict featuring musketry warfare. This means we can start to incorporate other fun features while still having our base combat mechanic intact.

Why did you choose to make a standalone game?
We chose to make a stand alone as it means we can make the game we want to make, without risking compromise by involving too many powerful interested parties. This also means that the player does not have to buy into another series just to play our creation, and we are not limited by the original game’s engine. For you this means we have a freedom of creation that will allow us to really put our and also your vision into something we hope will become creature of beauty.

Is this an MMO?
Not in the generally accepted definition of an MMO, no. Our game is massive, it is online, but it isn’t a grinding based persistent world with dungeons and levels. Our game is a huge first/3rd person shooter/melee hybrid, based on player skill and reaction, with no progression, unlocks or unfair battles. The game is also based on servers, and we encourage players to host their own servers and games.

Will I need to pay a subscription?
No, with a one time payment you have access to our game for your and its lifetime. The official public servers will be available for free, and we welcome our community hosting their own massive servers.

What is VOIP?
Voice over IP (VOIP), is basically an in game voice communication system. We are integrating a fully functional and complex VOIP system with which you will be able to talk to your teammates, give orders, arrange matches and encourages the deep teamwork that is the best part of our games. We would really recommend purchasing a microphone to get the full enjoyment from "Battle Cry of Freedom".

How big are your maps going to be?
2 X 2 kilometres is the largest map size we support so far. However, we have found that maps over 700 meters already feel HUGE. As such, the majority of maps will be around 450 X 450 meters in size. To put in perspective, a 2 X 2 kiolometers map would take you approximately twenty minutes to walk across.

So you’re basically a mix between Mount & Blade and the Total War series?
That is quite a fitting explanation, we want to combine a realistic and skill based combat system with the huge size and tactics of epic warfare.

What game modes will there be?
At release, Battle Cry of Freedom will feature eight gamemodes: Conquest, Battle, Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Duel, Capture the Intel, King of the Hill and Siege. However, we do plan to add more gamemodes after the games initial release.

A lot of games claim historical accuracy, how true to the time are you?
We as a team are very interested in the time periods we utilise. This means we genuinely prefer to be historically accurate, and this coupled with a particularly unforgiving community means our standards are higher than your usual title. With "Battle Cry of Freedom" we even want to take it a step further. We think that we have found the perfect balance between historical accuracy and gameplay. But when it comes to the graphical representation of uniforms, gear and weapons, we believe that it is our duty to get them as historically accurate as possible. This includes perfectly recreating the pattern of cloth, modeling buttons from the backside and getting every single stitch just right.

When will I get to play?
At this point we are unsure of the total development time, we expect it to take a year.

How can I support the game?
The most important help you can give is by following the development. However any help you can give in spreading the word is very appreciated, so linking us on facebook, twitter and generally telling your friends would be fantastic!

Will the game support clans/guilds?
The community makes a game. Our community is very important to us, and we realise how vital clan support is. We already have a clan registry and will provide the ability to find and play with your friends.

Will my computer be able to run the game?
We realise not everyone has a doomsday machine from mars. We aim to make the game accessible to everyone through the use of scalable graphics, low internet usage and an optimised network engine.

What do you mean by a reaction based skillful combat system?
We are taking our inspiration from the Mount & Blade series, utilising a directional attacking and blocking system.

What is your involvement with Holdfast: Nations at War and Anvil Game Studios?
Two of our developers (Olafson and Admiral) have worked together with Anvil Game Studios prior to the games Early Access release. For example, Olafson provided many of the games maps, 3D artwork and sounds. Admiral has created a large number of the games character models. In fact, Refleax and Rycon were part of the FSE Staff from 2012-2013. In addition, Flying Squirrel Entertainment has donated a couple of their game assets to Anvil Game Studios for use in Holdfast: Nations at War.

General Discussion / Source files and Singleplayer concept
« on: November 09, 2012, 09:57:05 pm »
Quote from: Vincenzo
Hey guys!

Just a little headsup, the source files are released for the Napoleonic Wars expansion.

Remember that you are not allowed to backport (transfer) any Napoleonic Wars expansion content (including, but not limited to, Models, Textures, Scripts, Shaders, Sounds)
to Mount & Blade, Mount & Blade: Warband or Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword unless you add a CD Key check for the Napoleonic Wars CD key in your mod installer.
The installer script provided in the package does this for you, so you do not have to worry about this if you use it.

Download the sources here:
www.flyingsquirrelent.eu/mb_warband_napoleonic_wars_source_1006.zip

Have fun modding!

Also, a litte note from me. As you might remember, long before the release of NW we were working on a linear mission based Singleplayer campaign.
All the Singleplayer source code is inlcuded in the source code zip. That means, that you will be able to make your own mission based Singleplayer campaign, or reactivate our campaign.

Since we thought that it would be a total waste of time if we did not release our Singleplayer source code and concept, we will also release our Singleplayer concept document.
The concept is unchanged and it looked exactly like that when we decided to cancel our Singleplayer concept.

Have fun modding, and hopefully we will see a few Singleplayer mods soon!

Servers / Dedicated Server Hosting Guide

Dedicated server guide

Contents
1. Requirements
2. Installation
 - Windows
 - Linux
3. Configuring the server
4. Opening ports
5. Running the server
 - Windows
 - Linux
6. Checking if server works
7. Good to know stuff

1. Requirements
Stable internet connection (Only if you host the server from your home)
You need a proper connection to host a game, go to: http://www.speedtest.net/ and test your Upload bandwidth.
It is displayed in Mb/s (Mega bit per second) for example 0.59 Mb/s
We need to convert this value to KB/s (KiloBytes per second) use this calculator: Megabit to Kilobyte
We need this value to calculate how many players your computer can support. In our example 0.59 Mb/s is 75.52 KB/s
One player takes about 5 KB/s so you take your value and divide it by 5 in my example that is 15.1 players which means our internet supports not more than 15 players.
If your calculated player count reaches around 20 players the amount of bandwidth needed per player will go up and probably take about 7 or 10 KB/s! so you need to turn the player count down a bit.
Remember that if you want to run Commander battles or any other bot game, that two bots count as 1 player in your bandwidth calculation.

Good CPU
A server will take a lot of CPU load, especially once it hits above 60 players.
CPU usage of a server raises exponentially with the player count, which means if 60 players are taking 60% of your cpu that 80 players might take 100%!
The warband server is Single Threaded which means if you have a multicore computer or server it will only use one core and won't use other cores if this one core is full.
To test how much your server can handle for CPU usage, just start your server later in this guide with bots, A bot takes about 50% of player CPU usage,
so if your server for examples is using 100% CPU with 200 bots your server can handle about 100 players. (Note that horses are seen to the server as bots so they take CPU usage as well!)

2. Installation

Windows
The server files are made for Windows and this is the most easiest setup, although the dedicated server seems to run fine on Linux through Wine.

Prerequirements:
- Mount & Blade Warband Dedicated server files: Dedicated Files Scroll down to Other Downloads.

Installing the dedicated server files.
- After downloading the server files we need to extract them.
- Open the downloaded file for example: "mb_warband_napoleonic_wars_dedicated_xxxx_nw_xxxx.zip"
- Click on the folder "Mount&Blade Warband Napoleonic Wars Dedicated" and extract it to "C:\Program Files\" or any directory you want really.
- Go to the folder you extracted to. which in this example is C:\Program Files\Mount&Blade Warband Napoleonic Wars Dedicated\

You installed it. Skip the Linux Installation part and read on.

Linux
Linux installation is a bit complex but if you are using linux you are smart enough :).
The dedicated server seems to run fine for me on linux, but your running it on Wine through a emulator, I don’t think it will run as good as on Windows. Tell me your results!
For this guide I am using Ubuntu Server 9.10 for linux so i will be using some specific Debian/Ubuntu commands, but you can just google yours.

Prerequirements:
- Mount & Blade Warband Dedicated server files: Dedicated Files Scroll down to Other Downloads.
- Wine 1.4 follow installation guide here: Wine Installation steps
- Screen program (sudo apt-get install screen)
- Unzip program (sudo apt-get install unzip)

Installing the dedicated server files on linux.
- After downloading the server files we need to extract them.
- Move the downloaded file to your desired location; For example: "/home/"
- execute: "unzip mb_warband_napoleonic_wars_dedicated_xxxx_nw_xxxx.zip" (replace xxxx with the downloaded version)
- execute: "cd Mount&Blade Warband Napoleonic Wars Dedicated"

You installed it. Read on.

3. Configuring the server
Decide Gametype
To configure the server we will start with a specific game mode example file. Decide upon which gamemode you like.
You can choose from: Battle, Capture the Flag, Conquest, Seige, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel and Commander Battle.

Making the config.
Open up the config file for the gamemode of your choosing, they are named: "NW_Sample_<Gamemode>.txt"

Set the Admin password, Server name and Welcome message first:
set_pass_admin ADMINPASS
set_server_name SERVERNAME
set_welcome_message WELCOME MESSAGE

Notice that servername can only contain simple characters: ( A-Z, 0-9, _ ) NOTHING FANCY!
TO ENABLE THESE COMMANDS REMOVE THE SQUARE BRACKET (#) BEFORE THE COMMAND!

Now set the max players you found with the internet speed calculation:
set_max_players 15 15

Maximum is 200 players!

Scroll down and find the set_upload_limit command This one is really important! It will basically limit the server to use more bandwidth then your internet can handle
and scale its usage accordingly. it's really important that you set this to your Mb/s times 1000000 (one million)
In our example:
0.59 Mb/s * 1000000 = 590000 So we end up with:

set_upload_limit 590000

If you are running the server from a 100 mbit or more uplink leave the value as it is!;
set_upload_limit 30000000

You will also find a setting for port here:
set_port 7240

You can change it to whatever you like, but in this tutorial I'm assuming you kept it at its default value.

You're done setting up the basic commands, if you want to configure more commands check out the file "Readme.txt"
In the dedicated server folder, it will give you all possible set_ commands and what they do.
Scroll completely down in the file to see DLC specific commands.

4. Opening ports
(Also know as Forwarding ports)

Router Firewall
To make people able to see the server in the server list and join it you need to open the port on your computer and router.
Before you can open your port you need to find out what router you are using. just find your internet cable and see what box is connected to it,
flip it over and write down the details that are written on the sticker on its back.

Find your router in this list and select it:
Router port forward guides

Once you found your router and selected it, skip the ad by clicking in the top right corner.
The page you're getting now has lists of games to open ports for, Warband is not in the list so click on "Default Guide"
Now work through the port opening guide for the port you configured with the set_port command. In our example that is: 7240
You are only opening a single port, NOT a port range. Open the port for two protocol types; Both UDP and TCP!

Windows Firewall
Now we must create a exception in your windows firewall as well for the same port you set in your settings.
Follow one of these guides:

For Windows 7:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-a-port-in-Windows-Firewall

For Windows Vista:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/open-a-port-in-windows-firewall

For Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308127

5. Running the server

Windows
This is really easy!.

Go to the folder you installed the dedicated server to and just run the file:
"NW_Sample_<gamemode>_start.bat"

Your server should be running. Skip the Linux part.

Linux
For Linux it isn't that easy.

We will be running the server in a app called Wineconsole which will emulate a windows console and send its output back to the Linux console.
Also we will be running the wineconsole inside the screen system so you can close your SSH session to the server without shutting down the server.

Use these commands to start the server:
"screen"
"wineconsole --backend=curses mb_warband_dedicated.exe -r NW_Sample_<gamemode>.txt -m Napoleonic Wars"

The server should be running, detach out of screen with: Control + A + D
to attach to the screen session again type in console:
"screen -r"

If you have multiple screen sessions open you need to specify which. First get a list of all the screens:
"screen -ls"

Find the one you want to attach to then simply type:
"screen -r <name of screen>"

6. Checking if server is working
- Start your Mount & Blade Warband game with the module “Napoleonic Wars” selected and go to the server list, make sure Internet is selected in the top dropdown list.
- Fill in the admin password and try to join the server
- See if everything is working fine and ping is fine.

7. Good to know stuff

Removing bans
You accidentally banned a mate of you? don't worry!

Votebans cannot be removed, they are automatically removed after 1 hour.
If you banned someone with the admin menu they are permanently banned. removing them is really easy!
- Open up the file ban_list.txt inside your Logs folder.
- Remove the desired line in this file which contains the person his ID and name.
- Save the file and you're done.

If your internet connection or computer can't handle the players you want then you can look for game hosters. I know a few, I might keep a list here later on.

If you guys have any questions or additions to the guide, please post here :)

Cheers and good luck!

News & Announcements / Battle Cry of Freedom Announced!
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:21:53 pm »
We are very happy that we have finally come to the point where we can announce our next project. The new game, which has the working title “Battle Cry of Freedom” is going to be a standalone title developed by our team alone. We are already in full process of developing the game.

Set during the exciting era of the American Civil War, players will immerse themselves in unique and rewarding tactical gameplay based on two teams fighting each other.
Utilising a wide range of weaponry, from long range rifled muskets and devastating artillery, to various deadly close combat tools such as bayonets, knives and muskets, players will take up the fight for the North or the South trying to win the day on the bloody battlefields of America.

The game will feature a large amount of players simultaneously fighting each other on the same battlefield in a completely destructible and realistic Civil War combat environment, rendered in beautiful up-to-date graphics. Our best efforts will be taken to ensure “Battle Cry of Freedom” provides highly enjoyable and balanced gameplay for the best American Civil War experience the market has to offer.

Please go to the Media section to take a look at some more early Pre-Alpha Screenshots. If you want to know more about the games concept continue reading in the "About the game" section. We will frequently update it every few weeks and new stuff will be added soon.

Feel free to discuss the Announcement here!
