Can anybody give me a clear explanation of the difference between the Oranje Vrijstaat and the Transvaalse Republiek? All I know is that the Vrijstaat kicked a bunch of Zulu butts

The Vrystaat and the Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek/Transvaal were simply two different nations. Transvaal was the bigger and more important of the two. If you want details, just search 'em up on wikipedia. Serves no purpose to just copy+paste it here.

Pretoria was the Capital of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek and Bloemfontein of the Oranje Vrijstaat.
