(August 23, 1942 - February 2, 1943)

The Battle of Stalingrad is considered by many historians to have been the turning point in World War Two in Europe. The battle at Stalingrad bled the German army dry in Russia and after this defeat, the Germany Army was in full retreat. One of the ironies of the war, is that the German Sixth Army need not have got entangled in Stalingrad. Army Groups A and B were well on their way to the Caucasus in south-west Russia, when Hitler ordered an attack on Stalingrad. From a strategic point of view it would have been unwise to have left a major city unconquered in your rear as you advanced. However, some historians believe that Hitler ordered the taking of Stalingrad simply because of the name of the city and Hitler's hatred of Joseph Stalin. For the same reason Stalin ordered that the city had to be saved. The Battle for Stalingrad was fought during the winter of 1942 to 1943. In September 1942, the German commander of the Sixth Army, General Paulus, assisted by the Fourth Panzer Army, advanced on the city of Stalingrad. His primary task was to secure the oil fields in the Caucasus and to do this, Paulus was ordered by Hitler to take Stalingrad. The Germans final target was to have been Baku. Stalingrad was also an important target as it was Russia’s centre of communications in the south as well as being a center for manufacturing. In early September 1942, the German Army advanced to the city. The Russians, already devastated by the power of Blitzkrieg during Operation Barbarossa, had to make a stand especially as the city was named after the Russian leader, Joseph Stalin. For simple reasons of morale, the Russians could not let this city fall. Likewise, the Russians could not let the Germans get hold of the oil fields in the Caucasus. Stalin’s order was "Not a step backwards". The battle for the city descended into one of the most brutal in World War Two. Individual streets were fought over using hand-to-hand combat. The Germans took a great deal of the city but they failed to fully assert their authority. Areas captured by the Germans during the day, were re-taken by the Russians at night. On November 19th, the Russians were in a position whereby they could launch a counter-offensive. Marshal Zhukov used six armies of one million men to surround the city. The 5th tank regiment led by Romanenko attacked from the north as did the 21st Army (led by Chistyakov), the 65th Army (led by Chuikov) and the 24th Army (led by Galinin). The 64th, 57th and 521st armies attacked from the south. The attacking armies met up on November 23rd at Kalach with Stalingrad to the east. The bulk of the Sixth Army – some 250,000 to 300,000 men - was in the city and Zhukov, having used his resources to go around the city, north and south, had trapped the Germans in Stalingrad. Paulus could have broken out of this trap in the first stages of Zhukov’s attack but was forbidden from doing so by Hitler. Unable to break out, the Germans also had to face the winter. Temperatures dropped to well below zero and food, ammunition and heat were in short supply. Hitler ordered that Paulus should fight to the last bullet, and to encourage Paulus, he promoted him to field marshal. However, by the end of January 1943, the Germans could do nothing else but surrender. Paulus surrendered the army in the southern sector on January 31st while General Schreck surrendered the northern group on February 2nd, 1943.

So, why was this battle so important?
The failure of the German Army was nothing short of a disaster. A complete army group was lost at Stalingrad and 91,000 Germans were taken prisoner. With such a massive loss of manpower and equipment, the Germans simply did not have enough manpower to cope with the Russian advance to Germany when it came. Despite resistance in parts – such as a Kursk – they were in retreat on the Eastern Front from February 1943 on. In his fury, Hitler ordered a day’s national mourning in Germany, not for the men lost at the battle, but for the shame von Paulus had brought on the Wehrmacht and Germany. Paulus was also stripped of his rank to emphasize Hitler’s anger with him.

Vasiliy Zaytsev, Russian hero of the Battle of Stalingrad. It is said that during this battle alone, Vasily had 250+ confirmed kills. Some say it was near 500. Vasiliy is also credited for the killings of 11 German snipers, including the real Major Erwin König, who was a teacher at the Berlin Sniper Academy. He died in 1991, and is memorialized to this day as the greatest soldier in Russian history, and as a hero.

So, with the history aside, my plans for the mod are fairly simple, and not at all beyond the realm of possibility...

The Guns and the Animations:
How will they work?

The explanation...
According to the sources I read, pistols and sidearms were not commonplace during the Battle of Stalingrad. This works out for me, because I plan on changing the current musket/rifle and pistol animations quite dramatically. Napoleonic Wars allows for only two reload animations (excluding artillery). Musket/rifle reload and the pistol reload animations are separate, and can be changed to whatever I need them to be. So...

1. Weapons like the Karabiner 1898 Kurtz (Kar98k), Mosin-Nagant 18911930 (MN91/MN30), and the ProtivoTankovoye Ruzhyo Simonov 1941 (PTRS-41) will share a common reload. The bolt-action guns are loaded with stripper clips. However, the PTRS-41 was reloaded with one round through the top of the upper receiver. So, it'll work pretty well if the animations are shared. Do remember, the bolt needs to be cocked and readied in order to fire, this will be put into the animation for the reload. In total, the reload for the bolt-actions will take approximately 3-4 seconds, and the PTRS-41 will reload in 4-5 seconds, due to the heaviness of the bolt.
2. Weapons like the Gewehr 1941 (G41), Maschinepistole 1940 (Mp40), Samozaryadnaya Vintovka Tokareva 1940 (T-SVT-40), the Pistolet-Pulemyot Shpagina 1941 (PPSh-41), and the will share a common reload since they reload in a similar way. They will use the modified pistol animation.
3. Maschinegewehr 1934 (Mg34) and the Pulemyot Degtyaryova Pekhotny 1928 (DP-28) I'm unsure about. I may be able to "get away" with using the reload animation in point (1.), however I may end up using (2.) in the long run. We'll have to wait and see.

Classes will get options for the weapons they wish to bring, and officers will use a sub-machine-gun, not a pistol. It's a compromise that will have to be made. I never said this would be an easy decision, did I? In place of artillery, sniper classes will be made. The Germans will get a sniper class with a ranker (Kar98k w/scope), a spotter (Kar98k and Binoculars), and possibly a special sub-class to play as Major Erwin König (Kar98k w/scope). The Russians will get a sniper class with a ranker (MN30 w/ scope), an anti-material marksman (PTRS-41), a spotter (MN30 and Binoculars), and possibly a special sub-class to play as Vasiliy Zaytsev

The Factions of the Mod:
The Wehrmacht Ostfront Armee, and the Soviet Stalingrad Front Army

So, the plan is to add the famous The Wehrmacht Ostfront Armee, lead by Generaloberst Friedrich von Paulus, and the Soviet 8th Front Army, lead by Army General Vasily Chuikov. The roster will contain divisions that stood out the most during the Battle of Stalingrad. Also, until I can figure out to get tanks, if it's even possible, the "cavalry" section will not contain units, or have more infantry unit types. Yes, I plan on having tanks. However we won't know for sure if they can be added until we get a coder on our team.

The Wehrmacht Ostfront Armee...

The Wehrmacht Ostfront Armee: The Army is undoubtedly the most famous Wehrmacht force during the Battle of Stalingrad. As such, they will be the main German faction in the mod. Each infantry unit will be given an Mg34 trooper in place of a standard color bearer. The planned unit roster (excluding weapon inclusions):

Infantry Tab
305th Infantry Division (Regular Infantry)
369th Croatian Infantry Regiment (Conscript Infantry)
20th Romanian Infantry Division (Conscript Infantry)
29th Motorized Infantry Division (Light Infantry)
100th Jäger Division (Snipers)

          Cavalry/Bonus Infantry Tab
14th Panzer Division (Pz.III)
24th Panzer Division (Pz.IV)
245th Assault Gun Battalion (StuG.III)
16th Panzer Division (SdKfz. 222)

          Specialist Tab
336th Pionier Battalion (Grenadier Engineers)
79th Artillery Regiment (Artillery)
2nd Luftwaffe Infantry Division (Elite Ground Troops)
Generaloberst Friedrich von Paulus (Commander)

[close]
Soviet Stalingrad Front Army...

As a counter to the German war machine, the Russians prepared an army that counted over twenty million. Similar to the Wehrmacht infantry classes, a couple of the Soviet classes will have a machine gun troop to select from, in place of the standard color bearer. It will also include famous units like the 284th Rifle Division, where Vasiliy Zaytsev served in, and will be a special unit in that class. The roster for the Soviets is as follows:

Infantry Tab
10th NKVD Division (Partisan Militia)
45th Rifle Division (Conscript Infantry)
13th Guards Rifle Division (Guard Infantry)
92nd Naval Infantry Brigade (Light Infantry)
284th Rifle Division (Snipers)

          Cavalry/Bonus Infantry Tab
2nd Tank Corps (T-34/75)
189th Tank Brigade (KV-1)
6th Tank Brigade (BA-64)

          Specialist Tab
8th Guards Engineer Battalion (Guard Engineers)
87th Guards Artillery Regiment (Guard Artillery)
Army General Vasily Chuikov (Commander)

Maps:
Small and deadly!

Basically, I want maps to be urban. Large roads are death traps, just like the actual battle. To promote melee, smaller side roads, or alleys, will be placed into maps so players can sneak around and hit the enemy with a good melee charge, or even a nice flanking fire. This mod is going to heavily based on team play, not just rambo-ing nonsense that exists in Napoleonic Wars...

Here's an example of a generic map idea I made in MSPaint.
Here's an example of a generic map idea I made in MSPaint.

Don't you guys worry, though. The mod may be based on the Battle of Stalingrad, but it also has emphasis on the whole of the WWII eastern European theater. There will be open steppe and winter maps, I assure you. :D

The Music:
Courtesy of the Red Army Choir.

The music for the mod will be from the Red Army Choir. I fell that the music produced by them is a perfect addition in replacement to the current Napoleonic War music. So, feel free to enjoy the carefully selected Red Army Choir music. Contains six songs: "Let's Go," "On the Road," "The Cossacks," "Smuglianka," "My Army," and "My Country."

Six tracks, subject to change...

Hello everyone,

I am bringing to you a project of mine, to enter me into modding. I just recently picked up 3d modelling, using programs like Wings 3D and Maya 2013. I found it to be entertaining, and I wish to pursue a project to get me started into the world of Warband modding. I understand that there are various other mods that have a huge following. Personally, I don't really care if this mod ends up with a small community. It will not discourage me from doing my absolute best to bring you a mod based on the bloodiest battle in human military history. I have so many great plans for this mod, and I look forward to sharing them with you. Please, give me time to get a nice thread going for you so I can explain my ideas to you simply.

Do keep in mind, I will be working on this mod at my own pace, especially since I am totally new to all of this and work. Do not ask me for a release date, simple because I do not have a God forsaken clue as to when I can release even a closed-alpha. I will not respond to PM's about a release date, or the possibility of being a tester. However, I will respond to PM's that are encouraging or offer for help.

I want to do my best to not rely on OSP items that community members have made. I want this mod to be mine, and I truly want to bring you the absolute best mod I can. I know I can do this, and any support will be highly appreciated. The updated thread will arrive either in a few hours, later tonight, tomorrow, or whenever I get around to it before next weeks end.

Nice idea for a mod though!

I put this list together for the failed Cross of Europe mod, hopefully it will help you. It's a list of 3d models of ww2 weapons. They're all free to use, but you should probably give credit.
