Yes, this was definitely a transitional war between 18/19th century "line" battles and 20th century ones. German Lines were wiped out by the accuracy of the French Chassepot, while French troops were crushed by German modern artillery. Cavalry charges were very ineffective and most of the heavy cavalry regiments who were engaged were destroyed, while in the second part of the war the cavalry role evolved toward a simple recon and harassment task (Uhlans were seen everywhere and are still remembered in France).
