Some of these ranks are obviously positions on a ship that would only be filled by one or two people, yet are placed in a hierarchy for the purposes of pay, and so that on shore, they can fit within the army and civil ranking structures. Any regiment planning on using these ranks will have to exercise common sense in assigning them to their members. Where a rank contains "1", it is read as "первого" - "pervogo" and note that the г is pronounced like a в in this genitive suffix. Where a rank contains "2", it is read as "второго" - "vtorogo".
*Captain of the 1st Rank is equal in grade to the army Colonel, so a naval unit should not exceed this rank but be aware that Naval Infantry (Marines) regiments used army ranks, not naval ones (and their officers were often transferred from regular infantry regiments, army academies etc).
** This rank was vacant during the whole reign of Alexander I and isn't relevant to NW.
