Caesar's Own Legio IX Hispania [EU/NA]

Legio Nona Hispana was a Roman legion which operated from the 1st century BC until mid-2nd century AD. The legion's fate is unknown but has been the subject of considerable interest and research. It was based in York in 108. The theory that it was destroyed in action north of Hadrian's Wall around 117 was popularized by a 1954 novel but was somewhat discredited when tile stamps later found in Nijmegen show that the legion was still based there between 121 and 130. Dio Cassius records that a legion was destroyed in Armenia by the Parthians in 161; it was possibly the Ninth Legion. In any event, the Ninth does not appear in a list of legions compiled in 165. The Ninth Legion remained in Caesar's Army in the Civil War that followed the end of the Gallic Wars. It fought at the Battle of Ilerda in Spain, in 49 BC. It apparently distinguished itself in Caesar's sight for the first time, and it won an honorary title - Hispaniensis. The Ninth Hispanic Legion also fought at Dyrracchium the next year - one of the rare defeats in Caesar's career. The Eighth and Ninth legions were both badly mauled, most of their men being wounded or killed. The remaining men of the Ninth fought at Pharsalus a month later, but they were so few in number that they were added to the strength of the Eighth. These two legions put together did not number enough to form one full-strength legion. The Ninth was presumably brought up to full strength after Pharsalus. From here its participation in the civil wars was minimum, and fairly dull (and therefore, fairly safe). It fought with Julius Caesar in Africa in 46 BC, and with Octavian against Sextus Pompeius in Sicily in 41 BC. It appears to have spent the entirety of the 40s BC in Macedonia on garrison duty; there is a faint possibility that it fought at Philippi in 42 BC Legio IX Hispana Triumphalis (Triumphant): 59 BC–48 BC, Julius Caesar, disbanded and re-enlisted by Augustus as Legio IX Hispana.
