My regiment uses them for fun, When doing a private line battle if we outnumber them, then instead of having players in spec they can go the entertainment party, and still enjoy the game and line battle. Also a regiment has to have ranks, without someone at the top the regiment wouldn't be able to function.

Some people like the period and the style of war which is bolstered by the historical feel of ranks/units. But the people who like the game because they can go round stabbing and shooting shit I don't think it impacts upon.

its fun

If they were playing Iron Maiden on the bagpipes, it would be fun. But currently they just get in the way.

You can edit your sound files to play whatever you want. I had a period at the early stage of NW where all instrumental music in the game was replaced with 80's music.

I want a full-fledged band next! Some trumpets, tubas and Trombones... Oh! And perhaps a woodwind section! That, coupled with the drum section. I'll have at least half of the team occupied with a glorious national anthem to Prussia while the rest of the team bitches and complains. Sounds like heaven to me...   8)

Kinda late, but you can mod your sound files to play anything you would like. I used to have Bob marley play instead of bagpipes.

The officer's pistol is pretty much useless, so it's good having a flag to rally around with the Ensign.  They still have a sword for melee.

I like the silly ranks. It's more historically accurate, and many players (including myself) enjoy being immersed in the game for Historical reasons.

Also, the music is nice. I say every regiment should have a marching band kitted out with a banner carrier!
