70th "Glasgow Grey's" Regiment of Foot
Regimental History
In 1756 Britain was engaged in the Seven Years War (1756-63) and thus in need of troops. One of the regiments given a 2nd Battalion that year was the 31st Regiment. Two years later, however, that battalion became a regiment in its own right, to be stationed and recruiting from Scotland.
It never deployed to the continent during the conflict for which it had been raised, however, and when peace came it was reduced in numbers and posted to the West Indies for 10 years, where it suffered major losses to disease. It then returned to Britain to renew its numbers before being posted to North America during the American War of Independence (1775-83). In 1782 it gained the county title ‘Surrey’.
The regiment then moved to garrison duties in England and Ireland before being sent back to the West Indies in 1794 and 1800, participating in the capture of Martinique. However, on the 1800 trip, one of its troop ships sprung a leak and four companies of the regiment were diverted to Jersey via Lisbon.
The rest of the regiment joined them in the Channel Islands in May 1801 before moving to Shorncliffe, Kent, where it formed part of the army of observation under Sir John Moore. In 1804 it was yet again posted to the West Indies, this time for eight years on the islands of Antigua, St Christopher, St Thomas and Guadeloupe.
Losses to disease continued to be a problem and in 1811 four of the regiment’s companies were sent from the West Indies to Scotland to recruit. The following year the rest of the regiment joined them there. This led to the unit switching its county title to ‘Glasgow Lowland’.
It spent 1813 suppressing riots in Montrose and guarding prisoners of war at Perth before being sent to reinforce the garrison in Canada during the War of 1812. It remained there until 1827, during which time it regained ‘Surrey’ as its county title.
The regiment spent the 1830s and 1840s on garrison duty in Ireland, England, Guernsey, Gibraltar and Malta, along with further spells in the West Indies and Canada. The regiment’s first Indian posting came in 1848 to 1857 in Bengal, before fighting in the Maori Wars in New Zealand from 1845 to 1866.
It then spent a couple of years in Britain before being back in India in 1871, where it spent the next ten years. It fought with the Kandahar column during the 2nd Afghan War (1878-80) and in 1881 it became the 2nd Battalion of the new East Surrey Regiment. The 31st Regiment of Foot provided that regiment’s 1st Battalion.
