Following John Brown’s raid on the Federal Arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, Americans across the South began to address the dangers to society that were presented by the threat of attack. In order to defend against similar incursions by rebellious groups such as Brown’s, the Commonwealth of Kentucky organized a State Guard on March 5, 1860 that was to be comprised of local militia units. To head the new Kentucky State Guard, Governor Beriah Magoffin appointed Simon Bolivar Buckner, a graduate of West Point, as Inspector General with the rank of Major-General.
Hundreds of local companies were raised throughout the commonwealth, which were formed into regional battalions and thus into regiments and brigades. The number of men under arms of the State Guard was around 13,000; with hundreds of thousands more considered fit for service, to be mustered should the Commonwealth actually be attacked.
While weaponry and uniforms issued were highly varied from unit to unit, generally speaking the regional battalions had generally standardized equipment and were drilled adequately. An observer noted of the Lexington Battalion that "We are certain that a finer body of men never shouldered a musket — a beautiful uniform, well drilled, and being composed of young and handsome gentlemen."
We will be portraying the Kentucky State Guard, which was a State Defense Force formed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky while it was attempting to maintain a sense of “Armed Neutrality” as Federal and Confederate forces fought each other. This will allow us to explore many avenues that otherwise wouldn’t be available if we were to choose a specific side to fight for; primarily, our position as a “Neutral” State Militia will allow us to play as whichever side we feel like at the time as well as preventing any big debate within our community as to which side to play as. Additionally, it is unlikely to be a formation other communities will attempt to represent, thus allowing us to have it to ourselves and allowing us to encompass all the branches therein (Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry).
We are still at the organization phase of this formation, and will likely stay at that until the game presents itself to being playable. Thus, the roster is open to all interested - but actual unit and rank assignments will not be set in stone until after initial organization is completed.
