Making an avatar - Learning from the best (Illustrated guide)
« on: December 27, 2015, 01:10:41 pm »
Intro

Hello, recently I've poked around in the "rate the avatar" thread and realized that Kronox probably has the top rated avatar. But how does someone create a good, well thought through avatar like Kronox has? This step by step guide will show you.

What you need:

A copy of the free GIMP image editing software here:
https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

and this picture I found on the internet:

You might not get the *exact* picture Kronox has when going deep into the pixels of your image. Keep this reference close:

Notice How Kronox showed some of the gun but not all of it, what you want to show or not show is up to you, make it yours.

Let's start
Step 1 Making a new image:

When opening GIMP, you should see this. Look in the top left and press File>New

Step 2 Resolution:

Make sure your image's size/resolution is 150 by 150 as seen above.

Step 3 Copy paste:

Copy the image from earlier and press CTRL+V in GIMP.

Step 4 Background:

Click on the eye to the left of the background level to make it invisible. This will give our image a nice transparent background.

Step 5 Eraser:
Select the eraser tool.

Copy these settings onto your Tool Options in GIMP.

Step 6 Strokes:
Make two downwards strokes with slight curves as shown below with the eraser.

If you messed up, you can press CTRL+Z to go one step back and do it again. Do this until your strokes are as good as Kronox's.

Step 7 Become the coolest kid on FSE:
If you did everything right, you should have something like this:

Upload it as your avatar and be a cool FSE user.

PROTIP: YOU CAN ALSO USE THE SCALING TOOL TO MAKE YOUR AVATAR A BIT TIGHTER LIKE KRONOX'S!
PROTIP: YOU CAN ALSO JUST DOWNLOAD KRONOX'S AVATAR OR DOWNLOAD THE ONE ABOVE!

Stop using my work idiot. You literally behave like a 12 year old.

I found this picture of a stormtrooper online and I know you didn't make it.

This guy is funny. You should be stand up comedian and fake Kevin Hart. The only difference is he's real but you are taller.

I'm not a comedian but educator. I'm also not black.

Errr, this isn't your work. This picture of a stormtrooper was made by an actual artist.

I don't get the point of this. ??? Barely anyone makes their own avatars on these forums. Kronox is certainly not alone in editing an existing image...

Just a little tutorial for those few interested in making their own avatar. I'm trying to show people that making incredible works of digital art is easy enough for anyone to do and encourage more people to be creative and find new ways to express themselves.

But some users still want to edit their avatars or signatures a bit and this is a nice guide how to do it. And I think Skills' used Kronox's avatar just like example
