Chef de Bataillon is the same thing as Commandant. Actually, a Commandant is called a Chef de Bataillon for infantry and a Chef d'Escadron for cavalry. I think they're equivalent to the British Major.
Then you have Lieutenant-Colonel, which was called Major during the Napoleonic Era. Today, Major is the highest NCO rank.
And finally you have Colonel.
