The Falklands War
« on: February 23, 2014, 01:45:20 am »
Well I was given this video just now and while the subtitles are clearly fake and supposed to insult the Argentinians I want to know what people think about the actual war and it's causes/consequences. I know it can be a touchy subject for some people so let's keep this civil enough.

Here's the Video

And yes the video is silly but it brought me to think about the topic.

Retro Colonialism as an excuse to get resources/territory is really dumb.

Both sides did some pretty impressive things and fought against not only each other but some pretty staggering odds. It is a shame terrible politicans are bringing up to further their own interests and an insult to the dead on both sides.

To me, the people voted to stay with the UK, hence conversation ended, God Save The Queen

I'm with Zac on this one. Popular sovereignty over all.

In the end it is up to the people on the Islands in that reguard. Even if they want to form an Independent state that is also cool.

The war itself is pretty interesting logistics wise with the Royal Naval Task Force.

I think the subtitles are mostly correct. I learned French, Latin and English and I understand enough Spanish to see that the words in the subtitles have something to do with the spoken words. :D
Maybe we have more skilled Spanish speakers so we can clearly tell if the subs are fake or not.

EDIT: Well, wait, I'm wrong. I have seen the video to the end and the translation is correct but often there is stupid stuff added to (as you said) insult the Argentinians.

Is it not an argument that the people originally inhabiting the island have been essentially 'out-bred'? The people who voted in the referendum were almost all from White British backgrounds it's really a no-brainer choosing between a large G8 country and Argentina. The vote might not be considered the most fair.

It'd be like Australians having to choose between a white economist and an aboriginal farmer for who they want to run the country.

The 1970's was not exactly a decade of prosperity for the UK.

Anyways, the discussion is veering slightly into more of a discussion of the causes of the war and peoples opinions instead of the war itself. Any good books or documentaries about it? especially ones that aren't biased towards either side?

I would not say they are/were a third world country. I think something between an emerging nation and an industrial nation.

@SeanBeansShako: Maybe "This is England" It's not about the war itself and but it kind of deals with its outcome.

I'm creating discussion. I'm not so secretly all for keeping the islands.

I wouldn't say nearly beaten but they took more casualties than they really should have.
Also;
USA/USSR in Afghanistan
USSR in Finland
USA in Vietnam
France in Haiti
The entire American Revolution ect.

You don't find so many stats in favor of the Argies in that war.

^ this. For a nation that was in a serious state of decline up until that point it was a spectacular comeback, although this may have more to do with the general competence of the British Armed Forces and incompetence of the Argentinian's, who seemed to enjoy crippling their own morale more than anything else.

The matter of sovereignty is and always has been down to the islanders; Argentina has no say in the matter and has only recently pursued the matter in order to stoke the fires of nationalism and draw attention away from a failing economy, crippled civil services and fractured infrastructure.

This extends to other similar issues, such as the sovereignty of Gibraltar and other dependencies. So long as the majority wish to remain British then they will remain British; ceding territories to countries on the basis that they wish to relive the glory days is just idiotic.

One of the translations in that video was "oh fuck" surely that must be wrong.

Oh you wanted a serious response, why didn't you just say so.

Falklanders are British citizens, they want to be British, thus they should be, I believe the war was justified, more justified than other wars, the Argentinian government invaded mainly to distract people at home because the military dictatorship was in serious political trouble, so needed something to rally people behind.
