Starting their service record fighting on the western border with Germany, the 63e was one of the main forces to battle the offensive in Belgium, there they covered the retreat of allied forces. They were able to halt the German advance through a series of bayonet charges and quick raids. There next objective was to stop the enemy forces from crossing the River Meuse. Called to strengthen the French line where it buckled most. There they repulsed the Germans again but in the fighting they were nearly surrounded. However, the Germans did not press their advantage and the 63e, along with the rest of their corps (12th Corps) were able to once again hold the enemy back. In the process losing 9 officers and 724 men in the engagements. From there the French army began to withdraw, with the 63e once again taking rear guard duty. Suffering from battle fatigue they were able to once again protect the rear but in the process of this, took 80 more casualties. From there they took part in The First Battle of Reims. Placed at the front of the army, they advanced under heavy artillery and machine gun fire, taking the first German trenches with a loss of 150 men. After this they were shifted to the left flank. The day after their main advance, a thick fog rolled in. The Germans took advantage of this by sending a bayonet charge through a farm. The 63e was able to repulse the charge but took heavy losses of 550 men but inflicting over a 1000 casualties on their German attackers. Losses proving too heavy for the regiment, they were withdrawn from the front and placed in reserve. From there they would remain in a state of inactivity as they tried to regain man power. However, this all changed with Verdun. Called to action, the 63e was sent to Verdun to halt the German advance. Placed in the middle of the assault, they take heavy casualties from artillery and gas attacks. The next day the regiment was caught, "stuck the earth" as an officer noted, from the shock of the German bombardments. Regardless, they rallied and were able to regain 400 meters of ground that had been lost the previous day. However, through out the rest of the battle they remained as a reserve unit, only called in to support when absolutely needed. At one point called in to reinforce a hole in the line, they repulsed a German bayonet charge but at a heavy cost of 271 men and 11 officers. From Verdun, the 63e took part in numerous other small engagements. One of their final battles in the war would come in the Defense of Reims. Resisting multiple incursions by the Germans under heavy artillery fire, they were able to succeed on multiple occasions. With one occasion coming of where the 63e and a fellow regiment dug along a 500 meter line. Together they repulsed a large German force intent on flanking the French Lines. From there they continued to repulse attacks until the Germans fell back. The final actions of the 63e would come as they pursued the Germans. With the help of aerial surveillance, they were sent on a rapid advance in coordination with British and American forces. Taking large swaths of ground and prisoners while taking heavy casualties as the Germans launched gas shells in an attempt to slow down the advancing forces.
