Origins of the Vistula Legion
The Vistula Legion was a Polish unit founded on March 31st, 1808 as a result of the renaming of the Polish-Italian Legion, created since spring 1807 by the decree of Napoleon in connection with her transition to French pay in the Kingdom of Westphalia, it existed until June 18, 1813. Initially it numbered 5,467 soldiers, and its first commander was General Józef Joachim Grabiński, and formed on June 7th, 1808 under the command of Colonel Józef Chłopicki. On the basis of an agreement concluded on May 10th, 1808 between the Government of the Duchy of Warsaw and the French Government, the Duchy undertook measures to ensure a steady supply of recruits to the Legia(Vistula Legion). The legion organized under the personal supervision of Napoleon at Bajonna, it consisted of three infantry regiments (about 5,000 soldiers) and a lancer regiment commanded by Jan Konopka.The Vistula legionaries wore dark blue jackets and white pants, and the regiments differed by only in the color of collars, rebates and laps. Each regiment consisted of 2 battalions - 6 companies each - with the first company being Grenadier and the last being Volunteer. Grenadiers were distinguished by red epaulettes and a red kit on a chako, and voltaeists by the yellow color of cords, putty and epaulettes.Marking of the Vistula Legion
Creation of the 1.Legia Nadwislanska 'Chlopicki'
Created on March 31st, 1808 from the 1st Regiment of the Polish-Italian Legion. The regiment was reformed to be part of the Vistula Legion in 1808 under Napoleon's order. During the preparations for the invasion of Russia in 1812, the regiment became part of the imperial guard.
In 1813, from the remnants of four infantry regiments of the Vistula Legion, one was created under the command of Colonel Stanisław Malczewski and in August the regiment was joined to the 27 Division of Izydor Krasiński.Col.Józef Chłopicki, Commanding officer until 1812
