Title: Units and weapons of the Anglo Zulu war mod.
Post by: Willhelm on January 07, 2013, 02:25:17 pm
So I thought it would be important to let you guys know what units and weapons we plan on doing. This list is not completely set in stone and is subject to change. We're looking for suggestions for what other types of Zulu infantry we could have.

I doubt it, only a few of the rifles have bayonets.

Well it's a likely feature eventually, but it's a rather complex thing to code.

Whilst it is still a relatively new feature to N&S Hinkel intends to keep it, you know giving people reasons to play his mod and all. Very understandable. He has however been very kind in advice given.

More like the Gatling would super-unbalance gameplay.

British didn't use Gatling guns.
Yes they did at the battle of Ulundi (last major battle of the Anglo-Zulu wars).
Chelmsford's forces included the first ever British Army Gatling battery.

I see what you mean though, they were not used in large numbers.

Wow, you guys really don't know how to take criticism. You need to chill the fuck out, seriously. If you don't think the current state of the models look bad, then wow...

Besides being children and immediately coming at me with "fuck off," why don't you be mature, and ask why I think they're terrible? Here's why:

1. There's very little texture on the uniforms, it's just flat colors,
2. The little Epaullettes on the British uniforms look terribly cut and pasted onto the uniforms and they're also flat 2d pictures,
3. The Martini rifles don't even have a full texture, just brown for the wood, and a very bright grey for the metal,
4. and the Zulus don't have very much texture either, but at least they do.

I also know that this mod is early stage in development. At least learn how to come back to people without such an attitude. I did nothing wrong, and you guys immediately said "Fuck off" far more than just once.

Like I said, as Willhelm improves so will the textures, we now have Betaknight teaching him a few things too.
I understand you were trying to be helpful but you didn't quite go about it in the right way.

Many Thanks, a most sleep deprived Jezza.

Actually, I did. And, you're attitude doesn't help into this situation. Don't get so upset when someone criticizes your work. That's so incredibly childish.

Kpet, I think James is just frustrated with the sheer amount of negging and nagging and figgeting and foogeting people have with the mod.

We're always trying our best to improve, but you've got to understand, we're a group of unpaid amateurs doing this for free, and are only trying to do this to make YOU guys happy. We recieve as many complaints as a fully-priced 60$ Boxed copy of the latest CoD. If you're not pleased with it, I'm sorry to hear that, but we'll keep trying to keep making our mod better and better. None of us have ever had any professional training with software, so I'm sorry our textures aren't AAA-Budget worthy. We WILL be improving textures, as well as models, but right now what you have is what you got.

Thanks for staying with the mod this long, I do appreciate it; I hope you'll continue to stay with us as we keep improving ourselves, and our product.

I started on the mod completely inexperienced. I've got about 4 weeks experience now. I think I am doing decent considering that. We did have an experienced texturer but they completely bailed on the mod leaving me as the only person to do it, with no experience. I was originally just going to model. I'll have to keep going over things again as my skills improve. Things are improved in the next version but still don't expect Napoleonic wars quality or north and south as i am still learning.

Thanks for staying with the mod this long, I do appreciate it; I hope you'll continue to stay with us as we keep improving ourselves, and our product.

Finally a very mature response, yes... I will stay with the mod, and was planning to. I was simply trying to voice my concerns about the models. Not have children get mad and start telling me to fuck off.

Guys, chill out, and get back on topic. This is a thread for Weapons and Units that are proposed to be used in the AZW Mod. This is not, in fact, a place to be squabbling about trolling and fighting.

Please return to the topic at hand, and if you wish to continue this, use the Private Messaging system so kindly provided by the forum owners.

A bit early to say, as my colleague has been trying to communicate, the abilities of the dev-team are very much a work in progress. Give it time, i presume that you'll see a lot more balance changes before any substantial visual improvements.

There is already texture on the uniforms, turn your graphics settings up or get some glasses, i know it's not the best texture but it's a lie to say there is no texture at all. It's a cloth texture with noise and a bump map.

Not on my game. It's just red, black, and biege for the helmet. Flat colors. The only texture is the cut and pasted rank epaulettes on the uniforms, and the Scottish Trews on the Scottish troops.

Turn your settings up you probably have textures to lowest. I know for a fact you're wrong about the black because all i needed to do was change the hue default pants...

Well, certain Boers had semi-uniformed groups, it's not fair to say that they ALL just wore whatever they could put on. But yes, there were few that had a strict "Dress-code" per se.

Can you make it so we have a choice (not random) of several different weapons they used like the:

Farquharson (sniper)
Spencer Carbine (magazine rifle)
Winchester Model 1876 (magazine rifle)
Westley Richards (basically a henry-martini, breech-loading single-shot)
Calisher-Terry (single-shot breech-loader)
Vetterli (Swiss bolt-action, common among Boers in the 1st Boer War, most advanced rifle of its time)
Snider (single-shot breech-loader)

That would be pretty cool.

That wouldn't really reflect the "militianess" of the boers and would be very historically incorrect. And people would abuse it by all taking repeaters or something

What about a choice between two guns: the Faquharson (for accuracy and damage) and a very nerfed Vetterli (for speed and close-quarters, make it like the Winchester the cav gets).
Neither would be wholly better than the other that way, just suiting different play-styles. I personally would choose the Farquharson for sniping, but my friend could choose the Vetterli for close-quarters bang-bang.

What do you think of that idea? That way you can have both destinctive Boer guerilla types.

I just think this idea would be fun and balanced for gameplay, that's all.

The only uniformity amongst the Boers was that they had none. The Boer unit has a very good range of weaponry suiting their style.

This is how is has been done and will not be changed, thanks for your concern.

What are the weapons you gave them, just out of curiosity?

Among them are the Farquharson and Vetterli but I forget the rest, Willhelm will undoubtedly see this post and tell you of the rest.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I'll be looking forward to the next patch. It's a great mod you guys are making.

All the martini henry variants including the swinburne
farquharson
westley richards "monkey tail"
snider enfield
winchester
double barreled shotgun

James is mistaken, we decided against the vetterli on the grounds that 2 repeaters would be over powered. The weapons are random meaning you can't choose which you'll spawn with.

What about you lower the option count, but make it by choice, not random?
That way people who want accuracy but slowness can get that with the Farquharson, people who want up-close buckshot can get that with the shotgun, people who want firepower but inaccuracy can get that with the Winchester, and people who want intermediate fire-arms can get the Henry-Martini, Snider, Westley-Richards, etc.? None of those would be O.P., they would just suit different play styles.

No, there would be 30 men with shot guns or repeaters and it would be OP, we're not nerfing the guns, they're not OP is they're not over used.

Eh. I personally would choose the Westley-Richards or the Farquharson, but I get what you mean.

So, on top of the Zulu's and British, Boer's are going to be their own faction as well?

The Boers fought against the Zulu, not with them.

They did, in the Anglo-Boer wars. Not in the Zulu wars.
