Marines? Were there marines at Waterloo? :/ correct me if i'm wrong btw, I've never come across them in the ORBAT
Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: joer5835 on July 11, 2014, 10:24:06 pm
There weren't, at least not officially. Though I have heard stories of loose scattered units (probably no bigger than a platoon/company) of marines on the allied side, but it's not confirmed.
Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: Barnesy on July 11, 2014, 10:30:01 pm
That's what I thought... still at least Dutch is closer than the usual Maltese marines I've seen there! :P

I'm just worried there's gonna be a shit tonne of Russian Regiments wanting to take part in it all of a sudden

Joer does Marines 1807 and his group is going as that to Waterloo, but with Orange cockades. It's certainly not historical accurate, but personally I don't care (although I do think historical accurate impressions should be granted priority).

hehe, bad boy, to your room!!! Duuring...show him what we do to hes kind...

I would, but I'm fairly sure that showing any form of graphic record of it is against forum policies.

Post by: Barnesy on July 11, 2014, 10:32:59 pm
Ahh gotcha. i've got nothing against it by all means, the Dutch were there in force, and I have read reports of some marines being there on the allied side so that sits with me :)

Well, Dutch marines at Waterloo are always more historically accurate than some American 1812 unit in Europe.

I remember seeing a US 1812 impression at photo's from Leipzig last year. Because the Americans were present at the Battle of the Nations!

I agree. One thing that makes me laugh is British units who do war of 1812 who are some of the most anal units going... won't go to any bicentennary commemoration if they weren't there... but are perfectly happy to do war of 1812 despite their battalion not being there

I'd be interested to see which brigade the Allied guys are gonna be in as well!
Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: Duuring on July 12, 2014, 01:18:34 am
No idea, really. The regiment I'm in was pretty much raised with the idea that we DIDN'T want to be part of a bigger formation so that other people can't fuck us over. That said, we're the light infantry and we'll probably end up in the 'light battalion' of the Allied army which will consist of 50% 95th, 40% dismounted cavalry and 10% other light infantry units.
Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: zac on July 12, 2014, 02:02:45 am
We 'colonials' are all basically staying in one battalion, as we dont particularly get along with some haha,

Ohh Duuring, you are mistaken, 95th wont be %50 of the Light Battalion, it will be %50 of the Allied Army as a while my dear friend ;)

Although technically we'll be part of the 51e, the other Argies and I will portray a small group of 85e. So far we're six guys, out of which 3 are grenadiers and 3 (me included) will be voltigeurs.

The problem I mentioned to Vince a few months ago still stands. Chances are we'll all look like farby twats around you EU reenactment master race, but synthetic fabrics and plastic-y buttons are the best we can get in this confounded unindustrialised 3rd world country.

At least we'll get the shakos and epaulettes made in the US. That's something.

The 51st doesen't allow you guys to be with them?

Perhaps then portray a unit that is not there...?

We will be with 51e, but the 'high command' of our little argie group thought it better to be 85e, since we already have all the buttons made for that reg. The guy in charge has an 1805 pattern uniform of the 85e, and refuses to wear anything else, making the rest of us wear the same long coats with crappy 85e plastic-y copper buttons.

Heh, at least I convinced the guy to let me be a Voltigeur.

Well that is understandable, though I'm not sure if that works well with the other 85eme already there?

Maybe contact them and ask if this is okay to do? I really have no clue.

I'll be with the 8e Régiment d'Infanterie de Ligne (which currently is the 8e Demie-Brigade, but they're working on their 1815 uniforms (shakos etc), so by Waterloo we'll be the 8e de Ligne).

Heaven forbid they were organised!
I think that it's essentially meaning that you pre register and then representatives of your countries main association will be the ones to give the okay.
I know here in the UK only units who have been accredited at certain events will be able to attend, so any group who doesn't do this (and it has been widely publicised so) will find it incredibly hard to attend!

The whole registration thing is stupid.

In my opinion, every group that has a member that is not allowed to take part should resign from it completely. Go to Ligny instead. It is a week earlier and it has group applications.

Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: Duuring on December 28, 2014, 02:45:35 pm
Lol. According to some official history paper published by the Walloon government, Wallonia was part of France while Flanders was part of the Netherlands, and thus there were no French-speaking Belgians in the Dutch army in 1815. Couldn't be further from the truth, really, but that's what they just love claiming.
Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: joer5835 on December 28, 2014, 03:10:19 pm
Wallonia got rejected at birth by mother France and so Flanders took pitty on it and invented it to his home. The uneasy marriage that followed is what they now call "Belgium".

You got me there on bayonet charges! We don't even bayonets! #toobadassforbayonets

Interestingly though the rifles did very rarely take part in bayonet/sword charges... one time when we did it we fired with the swords attached and the attachment got warped so the riflemen couldn't remove the swords!

As for hide and run, usually we run very fast towards you in a skirmish line, then realise you have nasty pointy things and let the cannon fodder in red do the rest ;)

The battles are, for some retarded reason, at 8PM in the evening. (WUUUUUU !!! This event must be good, because the Battle happens at PRIME TIME!!!!)

Since it is summer it shouldn't be dark at that time, but it will probably be dark at the end of the battle, and after it. Meaning you will have to clean your guns in the dark...

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/13/world/europe/waterloo-coin-france-belgium-euro.html?smid=fb-share&_r=1

*sigh* Soon as the press come out with a report bashing on the French, everyone just jumps on the bandwagon, comments in FB pages these articles were posted in forced me to create this meme. I mean disagreeing with the French government is justified but the bashing of the French people themselves and generalizing them is just insulting, makes me despair I live in a country where some people still hold onto 200 year old grudges and propaganda.

(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1052.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs450%2FMr_Tiber%2FSir%2520the%2520anglocentrics%2520are%2520here_zpsh8jjnpcc.jpg&hash=9f770aae058b21a3e10ace14daeac29d)

Now do I like the idea of a Waterloo euro coin? It'd be ok I guess but then again I don't use the Euro so it wouldn't really effect me. Do I agree necessarily with the French government in not wanting the coin minted? Not really but I can understand and accept why the French government wouldn't want it, I mean Waterloo was one of France's greatest losses, and 200 years of being reminded that your country lost is probably a downer.
I liked the design with the Lion Mound and all, but hey, if the French government doesn't like then it shouldn't be minted. I mean if it was minted, then by all fairness all EU countries should have to have a coin minted showing their greatest defeats, I mean would Britain mint a coin commemorating Dunkirk, Fontenoy or the Raid of the Medway? Of course not!
At the end of the day the commemorations are essentially about remembering the men who died for their countries.
Sort of turned into a rant, but hey, British press sucks arse.

Taking the gigantic risk it would result not in an allied defeat, not a Russian defeat, not a Prussian defeat, but a British defeat.

Considering he managed to hide the fact he issued orders that would have led to his defeat, I doubt it.

My favourite moment of all the Sharpe books comes in Sharpe’s Waterloo when our hero does so much for the British cause by shooting the Prince who was, by far, the least capable commander on the field, yet whose monument now dominates the landscape.

It would be a shame if we accidentally loaded our muskets with balls, and accidentally aim them at him.

Also, that picture at the top. That is absolutely NOT from Sharpe's Waterloo, no matter what they claim.

On closer inspection, those uniforms looks very dirty and beaten up like in Sharpe, if those are reenactors then they overdoing the campaign look a tad. And some of the guns look a bit fake, but I'm not sure if that's because of the shitty camera that was used or because they actually are fake.

Overdoing the campaign look? The campaign look could get a hell of a lot worse than that. If you read first hand accounts, the conditions of uniforms are described as being significantly worse than that. The weather, heavy smoke, and sleeping on the ground will do that.

I bought sharpe on Blu-Ray and I can confirm that a lot of their guns are actually fake guns. But they try to keep these fake guns in the background as much as possible. They also seem to be using originals quite a lot.

In the Patriot for example, large numbers of troops in the background held rubber muskets, and several were homeless individuals.

Might have had something to do with the fact some people were trying to kick us out of the NAN. Nobody of us feels welcome in the brigade, and we never wished to be a part of it.

I know tht we agreed with the KGL to help defend La Haye Sainte, but on the other days I dunno what's in for us. It's gonna be a cock-up, quite obviously.

Certainly doesn't look bad. Though if he wants to be really accurate, he should drop that weird greatcoat cover. Also, if he is wearing the greatcoat. What the heck is rolled up on his backpack? Blankets are supposed to be inside the backpack. (Although, I did see drawings of soldiers in greatcoat, with something (cant identify) rolled up on their backpack).

What really bothers me though, is how clean he is. Going campaign style means getting dirty. At least in my opinion.
That is a general thing in reenacting though. A lot of groups stay clean and look like they have just been issued new equipment.
I actually felt quite proud when people asked us why we are so dirty, compared to the other groups. It is just not right to look clean.
Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: Forest on June 08, 2015, 04:18:45 am
Literally anything goes with blankets. The way soldiers carry blankets varies. It would depend on what they had at their disposal to tie up their blanket in most cases. Soldiers did, of course, have to live up to their regimental standards, but the campaign changes everything. Uniformity of their equipment could often go to shit for purposes of comfort and efficiency on the march. We can't have such concrete images of the way impressions are "supposed to look". Great coats were actually standardized in the French army by 1812 so I wouldn't exactly call that weird. Many soldiers even wore civilian great coats just to keep the elements at bay.
Title: Re: Waterloo 2015 ~Units/Impressions~
Post by: Olafson on June 08, 2015, 01:02:21 pm
Greatcoat is fine, and should be worn most of the time. But on his backpack, he has a cover that is covering his greatcoat/blanket roll.
I do not think that there are any good references for these.

About the blankets on the back of the pack.. I am not sure. You aren't supposed to carry them there. However, there are drawings depicting people wearing something on their backpack, even though they are wearing their greatcoats.
Now, the question is.... Is that just the drawer trying to make the picture more interesting, or did they really carry the blanket (Or a 2nd greatcoat??) on the back?
I can not be sure about that, because the same guy has drawn pictures of soldiers with both something rolled up on their backpack, and with nothing rolled up.
Maybe different regiments had a different habit of carrying stuff, and some regiments did not obey the orders as much as others. I can not tell.

Another idea I had is that they could have put the "sleeping bag" that was issued to some troops on the backpack. It was officially allowed to be put on top of the pack. People generally did not do that though, because it was made out of linen and it soaks water and gets heavy in rain.

However, just not putting anything on your backpack is the safer and more accurate choice. It also makes your backpack look more alive, because if you stuff everything inside, instead of letting it hang outside, it all of the sudden looks like it should. A huge bulky bag made out of cowfur...

The whole thing seems a mess tbh! Everyone is registering at the same place, Hogoumont will be closed off for one afternoon when people are arriving because of a VIP visit. People are moaning about the mile march to the battlefield (Not an issue for me, its nothing compared to what they had to march 200 years ago)

Lets hope that after all the hype it actually lives up to expectations, and isn't just a PR stunt for the Belgians!

The most physically demanding event I've ever done but also the best event. My feet may still be killing me from the huge amount of marching we had to do but it is worth it. I enjoyed this event so much especially being on the battlefield for the first time and actually marching down into the dip where D'Erlon's  I Corps actually marched 200 years ago was astounding. I'll never forget it.

Same feeling man and glad we met ! I was in front of the Corps and when I looked back and saw all the bataillons following it was speechless

Well bugger me that was a brilliant event! I can't really describe the feeling of facing a huge french column with 3 brigade. we were out there alone on that allied left flank against what seemed like half the french army, and outshot them. My kit is ruined, I need new trousers, but do I care... no, I was there, I saw Boney and we bloody well beat the french! Good job everyone!

that was awesome! when we walked into the stadium on the friday, it was packed like 60,000 people. i had no words, and the volleys from our 500 odd men of 2 Brigade were massive.

Glad we had same awesome feelings from both sides ! Was quite cool that after some melee we had some little talks with the ennemy, joking and shaking hands :)

We made up a new marching song, it's very full of innuendo it goes as so

"A So, A so, A soldier i shall be
Two Pis, Two Pis, Two Pistols on my knee
For Cu, For Cu, For Curiosity
I'll fight for the old cun, fight for the old cun, fight for the old country"

when sang it sounds a lot ruder than when written ;)

Now to put verses to it!

You sure you saw me? Small (about as tall as Nappy), wearing round spectacles and possibly wearing a bonnet de police with a red anchor sewed on it?

My legs will take all week to fully recover from all that marching, but I've been reinvigorated to learn more songs, think I'll learn Chanton pour passer le temps and after than perhaps Le Depart du Boulogne :D
