7 years in December? This game can't have been "announced" in anymore than an aspirational way in December 2011; Mount&Musket hadn't even been usurped by the Napoleonic Wars DLC until the following April. I don't know if the original BCoF team included more members than just (part of?) the NW team, but surely no more than superficial work on BCoF could have begun until after NW released, at the earliest?

I agree though that it is galling that this game has basically ground to a halt years ago, after which developer/moderator comment about the game simply dropped off a cliff. I think they pretty much admitted that on the last occasion that they deigned to communicate with us (just a reply in a thread, not something they drew attention to- in fact I can't remember if even this meagre sign of life occurred in the main forum or the donator's board); as I remember it a developer responded to the suggestion that the game had been abandoned in favour of Holdfast. He said, if I remember rightly, that there were still some people working on this game and that its slow development was nothing to do with Holdfast (I think the actual crossover of personnel is very minimal), but that the originally small team for BCoF had dwindled quite some time ago to just a few and so consequently work on the game is very, very slow. I feel sympathy for them and, if they truly are still plugging away at it earnestly, I congratulate them, but I do wonder if they have genuine hopes of still releasing the game. What I am irate about is the years of virtual silence, never a single thread made to update anyone in the slightest over the years, while they do occasionally update NW and tell us all about it...one could easily believe, looking at any posts of developers or forum admins over the past three or four years, that BCoF had never even existed, since they simply don't mention it.

EDIT: Just checked the Donator Board, and in the Developer's shack Olafson has been very frequently telling us about their testing activity. He started doing this in June or July, I hadn't noticed until now since I stopped bothering to check it long ago. If you check his posts since June/July he and a few others do give some information about who is doing what and what happens in their biweekly testing meetings, so that is to be welcomed. A shame that it has only started happening recently, and that the general forumites don't get appraised of anything, but it seems the game certainly is plodding along surely, no matter how slowly, which is a welcome contrast with the wholly pessimistic impression I previously had. I still have significant doubts of whether the game will ever be released though, and remain rather miffed that they simply don't mention it in the main forum. I think they have previously said that they don't want to bother saying anything on the main forum until they have something really substantial and impressive to show, but without having a donator status and bothering to log in and look, one would not have any reason to think the game hadn't vanished into thin air years ago.

I virtually never play sapper so cannot comment on that side of things, but I played for about two hours today for the first time in months and really enjoyed it. This was partly due to a well populated siege server with revamped maps, but also because of nice little surprises (because it is ages since I read the changelog) like healing and performance being better, the latter allowing musican and officer etc. bonuses to be active on large servers without it lagging badly.

Dev blogs 5, 17, and 18 are about NW. It's not as if this section has been something exclusively reserved for news on the development of BCoF, but rather as a place for all development news for all FSE projects.

Whoops  :-[ Sorry about that, I was unaware of it. Not sure how I missed that; I've probably not read every single blog but I thought I had looked at most of them, seems I was wrong. Still, it is disappointing not to have heard anything about BCoF in over 2 years.

@ Thunderstormer: I apologise for getting my facts wrong about the purpose of this sub forum, and evidently I was wrong to believe that they had finished with NW.

Without reading the title, I was mildly excited to see the first blog in over 2 years, but then bemused to see that it had nothing at all to do with Battle Cry of Freedom. I had heard about the NW patch a few days ago but assumed it was done by Taleworlds; I was under the impression that Flying Squirrel were long since done and dusted with working on NW- now it seems part of the tiny team has been working on a nearly 6 year old DLC for another game, and posts the info about it under the guise of being a blog in the same series as the previous 27 blogs which were all about BCoF. It is bad enough to learn that the very few members not working on Holdfast or some other venture were not all working on BCoF, but could you not have posted this NW update info in the NW section? It's like a bad joke putting it here, a kick in the teeth. It's not as if the NW part of the forum isn't regularly visited; the patch wouldn't have gone unnoticed there.

Wow, 3200 Euros a year to share between the team, I expect they've been living on yachts down in Cannes, right? Why, it's at least a quarter of what a single poorly paid person gets in a year, what a scam! You know, with such handsome sums of money to be acquired I am tempted to become a criminal myself...

I understand and empathise with the general point you are making, but you don't have to pay much to get access to the developer sub forum (aka any screenshots or info). Below I've cut and pasted what the first donation tier is and what it gets you:

Any Donation
Exclusive access to a special Sub Forum where you can actively take part in the development.


The next tier after that is 5 Euros (you get a thank you and a wallpaper), so 'any donation' could be a single Euro (or theoretically less, I suppose).

EDIT: I should also add, there haven't been any updates this year even in the donator board. There is a thread of screenshots and stuff called The Developer Shack to look through with plenty of stuff from early 2013 onwards, but the last update in it was in early December. So don't go expecting regular goodies in return for your money.

If you're not allowed to give any details I understand, but it'd be appreciated if donators like you could give a reassuring word that progress is being made and there is a promising game in development.

also horses cant really bump into eachother and stop eachother, they like bounce off eachother and keep going, not sure how I feel about this...

Looks good to me, seems pretty realistic- when you see horses converge like that in real life they sort of deflect off each other, much like people do. It isn't like there were any head on collisions, they were all at angles. In Warband in contrast, there would be no effect at all on one horse, and the other one stops dead in its tracks and rears, as if momentum and mass didn't exist!

3 - One thing I saw is that the battlefield was the same. On the video earlier and the stream today, the battleground was the exact game. I would like to see a sort of battlefield randomizer. I know that this could be hard to implement into the game, but if you could, it would mark out any repetativeness in the game.

I was thrown by this at first, but there is no reason to think they will have a few set maps rather than using a generation system as in Warband, and I believe I know why the map was the same. I wrote about this at TaleWorlds and will paste my thoughts here:

I was also initially perturbed to note that the battle map was the same or looked extremely similar in both battles, and the same Vlandian lord was fought each time yet in a different part of the world map. But I now think this was deliberately set up for the purpose of showcasing the features that they wanted to within the time constraints of the demonstration; they needed the player to find both a friendly lord to bring along to show that feature (subordinating a friendly lord to join you) and an enemy lord. So to make sure it could be done quickly and not waste time searching the map and avoiding other interactions, they set up the lords in these positions in advance. For the same reason they probably made sure the same battle map was generated regardless of world map topography (or else placed the enemy lord in very similar areas of Vlandian land to get a similar result) so that they could demonstrate the enemy lord selecting a steep hill to use as a defence.

People might want to check out the TaleWorlds forum; a nice forumite named Hirovard went to the event and made a video, from which he has already posted several stills. He also got a photo with Lust! I think he is planning to upload the video, whether it will be tonight or not I don't know.

I checked the TaleWorlds forum again and realised Captain Lust had stated something earlier; as far as he knows, he says, there will be a 20 minute slot for Bannerlord in the livestream. So we certainly won't see all of the footage live, but he also said the whole thing was going to be recorded and we would see it at a later date, probably one or two weeks afterwards.

@Sinjide; I wouldn't worry about the console port, I am not sure it has even been confirmed for Bannerlord. As I remember it, the brief mentions it had in interviews said that they were considering it,  though they have said Warband is definitely going to be on Xbox and PS4. Also Armagan has stated that if Bannerlord is ported to consoles it will be after the PC release of the game and development will not be influenced by the console port.

Some of you may already know that Bannerlord is one of the games being demonstrated at the PC Gamer Weekender in a couple of days. What you may not know is that at 16:00 GMT on the Sunday, there will apparently be a live stream of the Bannerlord presentation:

I don't know whether all of it will be shown or whether it will cover other games as well during the 1 hour slot that Bannerlord has, but we will be able to see something of the presentation which includes 40 minutes of live gameplay.

EDIT: whilst the PC Gamer live stream does start at 13:00, Bannerlord's slot in this stream is scheduled to start at 16:00.

There was mention of Warband being ready for Playstation in the info that you linked, nothing about development of Bannerlord for consoles. Was it actually written in the Turkish magazine that these are console screenshots? In any case, they look great, thanks for posting them. The version here is higher res than the one I've seen posted at Taleworlds, and you can really see the horse bard better. I love the way that lamellar looks! By the way, someone on Taleworlds forum said that the round hilt of that Khuzait sword was of Chinese origin and spread across the steppe of Central Asia, so that explains the hilt.

And as such it is sad to see that most developers have stopped implementing split-screen multiplayer in games. Such a damn shame.

Indeed, I remember split screen multiplayer fondly, from games like Lotus Turbo Challenge 3 on the Amiga back in the early 1990s, to the demo of Serious Sam on PC a decade later. Playing over the internet or even over a LAN in different rooms isn't the same.
