Sadly, good (and popular) anime series based on European history are very rare, I guess it's because creators aren't interested much in European history. If they just take a piece of European history, adapt it a little and make a product, success is almost guaranteed. Rose of Versailles is good example of that, even though it's partly altered and sometimes looks like a TV soap, it has got unique charm and I find it amusing to watch.
Hopefully studios will see such opportunity, but so far we can avoid all new crappy series which have plain story, lame jokes and generic characters. Though, one of currently running series, Youjo senki, which is partly altered European history of WW1 (magic is partly involved, but doesn't ruin the show) and so far it's not bad, hopefully it won't get ruined.
