Hey guys,

I just wanted to chime in here since we were mentioned a few times in this thread.

The situation with 7NA is very unfortunate. The attacks are UDP based floods and there is absolutely nothing we can do about that except filter all udp traffic. Unfortunately TS3 and other voip program use UDP to communicate. Therefore when you block UDP traffic you are blocking TS3 as well. It's very difficult to fight against UDP floods and it can be very very expensive.

In regards to 7NA purchasing a ddos protection plan it did protect their game servers as the game servers obviously do not use UDP. The 7NA game servers were being interrupted at one point due to the size of the attack being 88mbps targeting their TS3 service. That is a ridiculous sized attack and we couldn't have that continuing on our network so at that point we had to null-route their entire IP block and that of course made all the game servers inaccessible.

The resources needed to be able to stop and filter UDP floods correctly can run costs upwards of $300-$500/month for either party depending on how many services you need protection for and how constant attacks are.

We are working with 7NA to try and resolve the issue with a few last resort methods to making the DDoS attackers' job a little more difficult.

They claim that DDoS protection requires premium bandwidth, thus taking more from their ISP.

Premium bandwidth and larger uplink ports do cost extra money but we are not charging our clients anything extra for the basic connection ports we already have. :)

What exactly are Bluefang Solutions providing you for that payment? Did they go in to detail? Because basic DDoS protection (at the software level) is free to setup, and will easily mitigate any small scale attack. (Of course larger scale attacks mean software level protection is useless. Yet large scale attacks against a gaming community/server? Sounds odd, pointless, even.)

We do provide basic ddos mitigation and ip filtering methods to help fight against ddos attacks as standard with any of our services. But as stated, UDP floods can be an entirely different story. :)

I hope this helps clear some things up about how we've been trying to help 7NA and a little bit of how we operate.

How much do you plan to charge for an event server of 400-500 slots?

Hey George,

As the game is long from being released we currently have no information on how the servers perform and therefore I cannot give you an accurate price range at the moment. We will test BCoF servers as soon as FSE allows us to by either early access or after purchasing the game. Even if we test early alpha or beta servers the performance and stability will change as the game gets closer to release so even then we couldn't offer a static price range. So stay tuned :)

I believe he is referring to how Bluefang servers just tend to lag in large, 100-200 man events.

Any provider will tell you that a 200 man event can be stressful for any hardware as Warband is not multi-threaded. Once the server goes over 120 players, everyone's FPS will go from 120 frames to 60 frames and latency/ping will increase 20-30ms no matter where you are located. This is how the Warband engine uses cores on a dedicated machine and its unfortunately not under our control. This is the main reason we are very strict not to overload machines and is why we cushion and load balance by at least 20% to allow processes to use 100% of the core it is utilizing.

If any of you attended NEC events up until a couple months ago, when the NEC was disbanded, you will know how well BFS servers perform with 400-600 players on them at any given time. We sponsored the NEC since the launch of Napoleonic Wars back in April 2012 and hosted every single event with only a few minor/major hiccups along the way.

One of our more recent large event customer is the Seven Nation Army (7NA) who host both NW and N&S events. They hosted one last night (or the night before) with 170 players in the server and it was reported to have run flawlessly and everyone enjoyed themselves. :)

If any of our customers have issues with latency we can immediately move you to a new machine or new datacenter altogether free of charge at any point a ticket is submitted. If issues persist we will grant next-invoice discounts and/or account credit as compensation.
