History
The Hessians were 18th-century German soldiers hired through their rulers by the British Empire. About 30,000 German soldiers served in the Thirteen Colonies during the American Revolutionary War; nearly half were from the Hesse region of Germany; the others came from similar small German states. In the context of the British service, they were all referred to as "Hessians." The American colonists called them mercenaries. They were hired in units, not as individuals. They received wages, but the prince of their respective states received most of the funds; Britain found it easier to borrow money to pay for their service than to recruit its own soldiers. The British used the Hessians in several conflicts, including in Ireland, but they are most widely associated with combat operations in the American Revolutionary War. They provided extensive manpower to support the American Loyalist cause. The pro-independence side made propaganda use of the fact that the soldiers were non-British mercenaries. They also offered them land bounties to desert and join the Americans. Several more German units were placed on garrison duty in the British Isles to free up British regulars for service in North America. The regiment was formed 1688 as the Regiment „Erbprinz Friedrich. It fought in the Palatine Succession Wars and took part of battles like the defense of Koblenz 1688, the battle of Mainz 1689, the battle of Fleurus 1690 and the siege of Namur 1695. In the Spanish Succession Wars it fought in the battle at the Speyerbach where it was nearly completly reamed. After that followed fighting on 2 July 1704 on the Schellenberg, 13 August 1704 at the Battle of Blenheim, and on 9 September 1706 in Castiglione It followed the participation in the siege of Toulon in August 1707, at the battle of Malplaquet, the siege of Donay 1710, and the battle of Quesnay 1712 In the Austrian Succession War fought the regiment, together with the Regiment "Prinz Frederick", on the Weser, in the Netherlands, on the Rhine, Main, and in Bavaria. In 1789, the "Leib-Fusilier Regiment" and the regiment "Landgraf" merged to "2nd Hessian Regiment". The former Leib-Fusilier Regiment formed the first battalion, the regiment Landgraf the second Battalion. |
