Developer Blog #3 - Revival Plans, Iron Europe 2.0
Hopefully, the lack of new information hasn't given the impression that the mod has been abandoned. The team has been hard at work improving the mod, taking into consideration the suggestions and criticism we have received. All aspects of the mod will be refined and some widely requested new features will be added. All of these changes will culminate in a large update called Iron Europe 2.0. This developer blog will cover a small portion of our overall plans for the update.

More dynamic gameplay is one of our main focuses. An issue that lots of people have reported is that on each map, the factions will always capture and hold the same flags, round after round. Due to the respawning of defenders and lack of cover, it is almost impossible to capture points, leading to repetitive gameplay. A start to fixing this is to lock spawning on flags where combat is happening. This will remove the frustrating moments when you're trying to cap a flag and get shot in the back due to a spawning defender. As well, our current maps will be reworked to provide more cover, allowing for easier movement between flags. New maps will also be made with this in mind. As a result of these changes, game-play will be much less repetitive and more tactical.

As many of you have guessed, the United Kingdom will be making its appearance in IE 2.0. Docm's contribution of a Canadian Uniform (http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img18/8062/b85r.jpg) gave us a huge head start.

We have plans to add different regiments to each faction, meaning that you might see Scottish, Canadian, Australian and other Dominion troops as part of the new UK faction as well as the Foreign Legion and Bavarians for France and Germany, respectively. However, depending on how we progress in the coming weeks, they may or may not be part of the upcoming update. Still, if there is a particular regiment you would like to see in the game, let us know and we would be happy to consider your suggestion.

More info on our plans for Iron Europe 2.0 will be released in future developer blogs. We believe that an update of this size will be able to revive the mod as there is plenty of room for improvement and NW still maintains a sizable player-base. If you enjoyed playing the mod when it was populated, please help us to rebuild the community so that you can do so once again upon the release of IE 2.0.  For instance, you might be interested in joining our public weekly monday event at 19.30 GMT +1. For more information, check this page (https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/index.php?topic=17970.0). As always, thanks to those who continue to support us.

Very fitting to reconnecting today in history, I saw this mentioned on the news
Quote
Thousands of ceramic poppies that poured out of the Tower of London have been planted to represent the fallen British soldiers of the First World War.

In the elaborate creation by Paul Cummins named Blood Swept Lands and Seas, 888,245 poppies flow out of the tower and rest in the surrounding garden.

The artwork marks the 100th anniversary of Britain's declaration of war on Germany, their most costly conflict.

The final poppy will be symbolically planted on Armistice Day (November 11) this year.

A very fitting tribue to the fallen and here we are anticipating getting back into the trenches again in this mod.

Great news, happy to see you guys are still plugging away and making progress improving this mod despite the early pitfalls and ignoring the complaints of the petty people I've seen lately.

I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing the Commonwealth enter the fray and the future for this mod now!

Good to see, and sorry to be blunt, but will this new version lag less and not cause server boxes to implode at over 100 players?

Even the current available version should work. Vince promised me that it would. But because no one ever played the mod again, after the first version was released, there was no way to test and find out for sure.

Good to hear it's going well. This time with the beta testing, mind who you pick. Not like last time where a big part of the people that were picked as beta testers barely came on. Which made stress testing quite impossible.

Maybe to add a bit of uniqueness to the Canadian unit (to seperate it from the other English speaking regiments) you can have it be the Royal 22nd Regiment "The Van Doos" primarily a French speaking regiment.

At any rate, hope for the best!

Yeah, for many reasons, the team has been hugely reduced. Currently, being my summer holiday from school, I am working 12+ hours on this mod a day, implementing cool new features and other things. You may have seen my testing server up.

The team is working as best it can to bring this awesome community a mod that hopefully, they will enjoy and persevere with more than the last version.

Since I am back, I will still be supporting Iron Europe as it is one of my biggest achievements (after Mount and Gladius 1st revival).
I expect everyone to help us along with the support of the mod and to help us make this a better mod.
I hope that we can work together to make a better, brighter mod and community for everyone.

It would be nice if the Artillery and HMG units could have "Operator", it could have just a pistol or a rifle. Sometimes the battlefield is full of useless mortar shells, HMGs and ammo boxes.

Royal Fusiliers - City of London regiment.

They were the first British Expeditionary Force unit to take major action against the German Offensive in the Battle of Mons.

Read all about it here!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mons

Edit: As for a Scottish regiment, I think this would be the most appropriate in my opinion as it is all-encompassing of the Scottish regions.

That would be a horrible idea. The tank would ride of in fear when you leave it and lots of other problems with clipping. The way people are now making vehicles in IE is buy actually coding in a vehicle and not actually just re-skinning a horse. This is hard enough without trying to make a tank as realistic as possible. This mod does not settle for "well it's kinda okay and kinda is authentic but not really." It has to be good or it's not worth the effort.

If I could recommend a siege map I would recommend fort Doumont for Verdun. Also seeing the common wealth is will you be adding maps such as Vimy Ridge, Ypres and Passchendaele? I don't know if they are already maps or not but I would like to see them. Also Sulva Bay for a naval siege? Also what is the news on artillery will there be more variation? Also if somehow could make underground warfare (Destructible dirt walls and what not) I think it would be really cool and you could have maps such as Varquois Mines. These are just some of my questions and suggestions.

Remake a horse into a bicycle, then have "horsemen" who come mounted on these bicycles. Would be cool if every troop type could ride them, makes MG's a lot faster to get to the front.

I would love to see the Royal Munster Fusiliers if you make an Irish unit. These guys fought at Hill 60 at Messenes.

What do you guys think? They're one of the oldest Irish regiments in the commonwealth and have seen extensive service in the war.

I would personally love to see the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Given the title royal after they showed exceptional bravery at the battle of Beaumont Hammel were nearly the entire regiment was wiped out in a single charge on the first day of the battle of the Somme.

One of the most conspicuous acts of self-sacrifice in the war was the heroic deed of a private in the Highland regiment. This unnamed soldier proved himself a super-hero. His regiment was advancing under a withering machine-gun fire, and one gun in particular was accounting for many lives. Like a flash the Highlander rushed ahead with a bomb, and actually hurled himself on the muzzle of the German quick-firer. He was riddled with bullets, but his body choked the gun, rendering it useless. This act thoroughly demoralised the German gunners, and saved hundreds of Highlanders from death.

Reading all of this it doesn't look like there is going to be many English units? Not trying to be offensive or anything the Empire did a lot for Britain

Whack in some Pals Battalion's

For exmaple the 10th Lincolnshire or "Grimsby Chums"
Or the Accrington Pals

It would be nice to have Alpenkorps or a distinct regiment from it added to Germany
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpenkorps_(German_Empire) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpenkorps_(German_Empire))
Spoiler
During World War I, Rommel fought in France as well as in Romania (see: Romanian Campaign) and Italy (see: Italian Campaign), first in the 6th Württemberg Infantry Regiment, but through most of the war in the Württemberg Mountain Battalion of the elite Alpenkorps. He gained a reputation for great courage, making quick tactical decisions and taking advantage of enemy confusion. In one case, Rommel captured 1,500 men and 43 officers with just 3 riflemen and 2 officers under his command.[13] Rommel was awarded the Iron Cross, Second Class in 1914, and the Iron Cross, First Class in 1915.[14] Rommel gained success leading small groups of men, infiltrating through the enemy line under cover of darkness, moving forward rapidly to a flanking position to arrive at their rear areas, attacking and shocking the defenders with the element of surprise.[15] In 1918 he received the order of Pour le Mérite, Germany's highest award, equivalent to the Victoria Cross or the Medal of Honor, for his leadership in the fighting at the Battles of the Isonzo in the north-eastern Alps on the Isonzo river front; during the engagement, Rommel captured the mountain strongpoint of Matajur and its 7,000 defenders with only 100 men. For a time, Rommel served in the same infantry regiment as Friedrich Paulus, who, like Rommel, rose to the rank of Field Marshal during World War II. Rommel was wounded three times in the Great War.

Remake a horse into a bicycle, then have "horsemen" who come mounted on these bicycles. Would be cool if every troop type could ride them, makes MG's a lot faster to get to the front.

Prepare the Bycicles! CHAAAAAAAARGE *Swords pointing at the enemy*

We don't have a release date at all. Who told you that? Or if we do, I have not been told, and I'm the main coder, so that would be pretty wierd...

The only thing that I ever experienced in I.E. (when released) was the lag, the lag, the trolls, the lag, and the 600m pistol headsh0ts.
So now I'm kinda "meh" (universal sound of disinterest) when I hear people talking about IE. Im sad to say that Ive lost interest :'(

On a serious note, I hope that you have undertood by this point that most people (casual players) dowloaded IE at launch, played it a bit, got a shit impression, and promptly pressed Alt-F4 and went back to NW. Also, the active NW player base is slowly declining, which is why so many NW only mods have low player counts, or are as dead as the zombies I killed this morning in L4D 2. A lot of work needs to go primarily into trying to change IE's image, in order to get people to try it just because of good publicity, nothing else.

Spoiler
Low player counts = dead as a dodo. Im complaining about the same thing. If you think that a) I actually care enough about IE to "spread the word"  that it's dead, or b) People will read just my comment and immediately become convinved that the mod is ded without further investigation, then, well, you are deluded.

My dear Klaringos, your post seems to be exactly what you posted some weeks ago.

At release IE, had a shitload of problems. Now, some of them fixed, it still has more.
I abandoned it soon after release, but some of my "complaints" were:
Lag above 120 players- Only two factions with not a great number of troops between the two - Lag - OP snipers - OP pistols/revolvers at medium range (so accurate and no bullet drop? Why? ) - Lag - Reasonable variety of maps, but nothing earthshattering - overwhelming focus on Conquest mode - Lag - Trolls who threw grenades into packed trenches and left, gettng tens of teamkills at once - Lag - Medics, and loss of health if injured (led to even more trolling) - Lag - No Naval maps (say sea invasions like GALLIPOLI and the Anzacs, for example) - Lag - No melee at all, and the little needed in the trenches mostly was fucked due to the lag - No admins on the less populated servers - rapid community disinterest after a few days - Lag.

I hope this mod picks up a bit... before Warband dies as a game :D
I do believe we have all understood why Iron Europe sucked so badly, but why dont you start changing your mind yourself, instead of complaining the entire day? The Development Team is actually putting some effort into getting some sort of community back for this mod by organizing events, releasing Developer blogs and actively playing on the Official servers. In fact, there has been a good response from the players, and the server population has been steadily increasing throughout the last few weeks. Also some new regiments have started getting back to training on official servers, and we're trying to help them by putting servers at the players' disposal. Why don't you help you, and spread some good publicity too instead of complaining?  "Want something done good? Do it yourself!". Before i forget, the surrender animation, along with a few other "RP" animations have been implemented in 1.21 patch.

I'm aware that this mod's community has picked up, yet, for obvious reasons, I will not advertise or promote anything which I havent even played. You have others to lie on your behalf.
When/If the I.E. 2.0 patch comes out, marking, hopefully, a new era for the mod, then I will try it, give feedback, tell my classmates about it, host a huge billboard on the highways displaying it, write to the media to inform them, etc. etc. But for now, you have work to do, and sadly the mod is far from puurfect.

Im sure that any feedback I could possibly give has already been mentioned on this glorious board somewhere, so, well, happy coding I suppose. Im curious to see if and how this mod can be saved.

Dear Klaringos,

First of all, I appreciate that you played the mod and for the feedback.
Now, the fact that you haven't played the mod after the first release, means that your feedback is outdated, therefor we cannot really use it as any form of information for us to change the mod. Many changes have been done to the mod AFTER release.

Our goal is not to lie to the community. On the contrary we try to keep it realistic and try to bring the features into the mod. Ofcourse this was the first mod to include such a type of warfare. Therefor we wanted to first bring the basics. Before including any form of vehicles or new features, since we didn't want to bring a broken mod.

Yes our mod did end up laggy and buggy, but keep in mind that we just broke open the engine for new features. Thanks to the effort of FSE we have managed to fix a few bugs and the lag. Naturally we are working on making it better.

I would suggest you try the mod again and give us a more updated feedback, which we would appreciate.

Sadly discussion, unlike coding, doesn't seem to be one of your strong suits. I said that I tried the mod at launch, and it lagged like hell. It doesn't now? That's Great.  Now we can move onto the server crashing issue.

Saying that a mod is pushing the boundaries etc etc is a nice thing to claim with pride to new players, but doesn't mean shit to anyone else. If you can't experience a mod at it's fullest, and your experience is tainted by technical issues, then the improvement/advance is irrelevant. Hopefully, if IE, as a mod, has overcome it's issues, then you guys can focus on bringing the community back, showing how groundbreaking the new features truly are.
F.I. 2, for example, wouldn't be as popular as it is to the Native crowd if it still ran like arse. Happily, IE, at least according to the devs, is well past that stage...

Just did. Event Server crashes at 8:31 pm, although, admittedly, there was not that much lag (about 70-80 players when I was online)

EDIT: Server with like 40-50 players crashes at 20:43 pm. DanyEle calls it a night.

But the title says "Revival plans" wich then would probably mean that they're trying to revive something that is dead?

Except we owe you nothing. You should be ashamed for making such a stupid post.

I'll make a statement on what's going on with the mod soon.

It's not entirely dead, the devs from what I know are working on it since the break of college.
