likely this unit was in camp and not on campaign for gaiters and especially boots were done away with while on campaign.

My professor just showed this picture in class yesterday to show how the Federal Navy was integrated during the War.

It still seems that most black men are off to the right side and separated from the white men however.

Same here. To think that these men and women have been dead for well over one hundred years, yet the photos look as if they could have been taken yesterday. There's just something absolutely fascinating and a little bit eerie about photographs this old.

I fully agree.

There's a subreddit(Where I got these pictures from) that has quite alot of Civil war Photos. They also have a impressive portfolio of photos from other wars as well. Might be a good idea to check them out.

First sergeant of infantry, my guess? The sword is an epee, not used by cavalry...But can anyone tell me what kind of rifle he is holding?

I wonder what that piece of paper is, in his breast pocket...

The gun is possibly from Colt. Can't remember the design name but it can be assumed as Colt Repeating Rifle.  But I definately know its by Colt.

Here's what I managed to dig up on him. Charles Powell.17 years old when he enlisted on 31 May 1861 as a 1st Sgt, in Co. F. 14th NC infantry re-designated 24th infantry. He later served in Company B of the 10th Battalion NC Heavy artillery.
Source: Greg Mast, State Troops and Volunteers: A Photographic Record of North Carolina’s Civil War Soldiers p. 93 In Portraits of Conflict: A Photographic History of North Carolina in the Civil War, Richard B. McCaslin gives an account of Powell's service:

"When the 10th Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery, attacked Union breastworks at Bentonville, Lt. Charles S. Powell charged alongside Lt. Willoughby L. Hockaday armed only with a shovel, which he held across his stomach as a shield. The battalion lost 38 men killed and wounded, but they chased the Federals from the works and enjoyed a brief but futile triumph."

Its a colt repeating rifle -

Probably a Colt Model 1855.

Unsure if there were any other revolving rifles kicking around the civil war. I'll try and find out.

Considered perhaps the only known photo of CAS Soldiers on the march. They are going through Fredric Maryland. Some of these men would soon be killed at Antietam.
