Title: A Yankee.... at Waterloo
Post by: Duuring on March 06, 2013, 11:51:05 pm
You got to be...

Fucking KIDDING ME!

Yes, this man, born in Philidelphia, SOMEHOW served 7 years in the Portuguese army, did every campaign in the Peninsular (That's what it says - every) and then was a Korporaal in the 7de Bataljon van Linie at Quatre-bras and Waterloo.

I've seen Danes, Germans, Scots, Czechs, Prussians and even French in the NL army, but this is the first time I found an American. Thought it would be worth sharing.

Also note how he's 1,70 cm, while most guys were around 1,55. And the fact he's only 22 during the battles, which would meant he joined the Portuguese army aged 12-14; I leave it to you to trust or not trust this story.

It wasn't unheard of for an American to serve in a European army. There were at least five Americans in the Irish Legion of the French army, and I suspect a lot more than that in other French regiments. Naturally, there were a number in the British army, as well, especially if you count Canadians.

Yes, but I'm quite sure this is the first time an American in the UKN army has been found.

There actually was an ex-corporal from the 3eme etranger in the 8th Dutch militia.

I'm pretty sure plenty of nationalities are to be found in a major conflicts. If it had not been for some political leaders, aid and Prehaps the states would have entered the war on either side.

Lol alternte history novel idea - America enters the Napoleonic Wars, but on who's side?

That should be a bit obvious, given the Louisiana Purchase and the War of 1812. :P

At the time, I think it was seen as ungentlemanly to try and escape. I think I learned that from Horatio Hornblower...so...yeah.  :-[

But this was just a ranker. And an American, and we all know Americans have no sense of honour. Right?

The only reason the entire army didn't route was because that proud, patriotic 'Murican was there to help raise morale, with talks of Eagles and the good ol' Stars and Stripes. Waterloo, was in effect, won by not the guns of armies, but by the spirit of 'Murica.

Smoke on that.
