Title: United Kingdom
Post by: Theodin on April 17, 2015, 11:06:49 pm
Having lived in the UK and seen all the detective shows, why does the UK look like a fucking horrible place to grow up in? Is there any hope? Do I just not know anything? I'm not hating on the UK, personally I enjoyed my time there, but it just felt horrible there. Any English people here to talk about it?

An English friend of mine said that British people have really poor mental health. Considering he has a suicidal gf, I really don't know whether it's true or not. But the weather and the cold, down south, during the winter, made me miserable.

Spoiler
P.S. I hope those detective shows weren't depicting the Victorian era with the slums and everything :D

I have been to England two times. I quite enjoyed it there. The only bad thing is that you can't find anything which normal human beings would call "something to eat".

Depends which area you live in I guess. You can get some proper shitholes. Weather can be glorious one day and horrid the next. The countryside is beutiful. Country was an alright place until our governments began  fucking the working class. I don't really know what to say without you specifically saying which factor of growing up you are thinking about?

Heh, heh, heh. Southerners everywhere have something against the North, no matter the country.

I've only been there once, but my impression of the place was not that great. London was a shithole (but no Brit will ever dispute that). The countryside was alright but even the suburban areas which are usually pretty wealthy in the US seemed pretty dreary and run down to me.

The people seemed sort of off. Not really rude or stupid, but just strange. It probably just has something to do with them being foreigners, but even a German or a Swede seems more similar to what I'm used to than an Englishman. I dunno. Also in Kensington Palace there was a pakistani guy ranting to a security guard about how much he hates America, which was pretty funny.

I r8 it 6.5/10.

I'm a southern fairy and we southerners cannot stand  those nothern tree swinging monkeys. Banter all over the UK.

Its really down to accents and posh vs poverty. Sometimes  just preference  of what you are told about the North or South.

You poor soul.

Your experience of the UK will depend on what you go looking for. If you're after touristy things and seeing shit you've seen on postcards then don't bother leaving London, just get an all inclusive tour and do that.

If you wanna experience the "British culture and lifestyle" then watch Downton Abbey and stay at home.

If you wanna see countryside then come to Britain. Everywhere has countryside of course but you wanna not be attacked by bears while you're out walking. Scotland is great for that and so is the North. There are great villages all over the place so unless you're in the highlands you're not gonna be in any sort of wilderness. The wildlife is tame and non-lethal but it's nothing even worth putting in a zoo (again, unless you're in Scotland).

Shopping wise you can only get better in New York/Dubai ect. Leeds/London are the places to be for shopping and all the "good" big cities (Manchester/Leeds/London/Edinburgh/Liverpool/Newcastle, not: Birmingham/Nottingham/Cardiff/Swansea) have big shows of all the big celebrities on. Edinburgh's Comedy Festival is just as good as that of Montreal and Melbourne (from experience).

York/Lancaster/Durham and all your other old fashion cathedral cities are great day trips, the winding streets and cobbled paths are home to very nice shops and attractions.

Food wise I never understood. There is no such thing as British food really so don't go looking for it. Otherwise of course you're going to have a shit time you fucking inbreds. If you find yourself in a nice pub then maybe get yourself a roast dinner which is a pretty international way to eat. Eat out at the international restaurants that are everywhere.

That's only for Wales and Aberdeen.

Everything, depends on where you are in the UK as places can be very different, it also depends on your own expectations to be honest.

The UK is no different to any other place, there are the poor, the middle class and the upper class. It's just the way that the media generally only shows a representation of the lower classes nowadays as the majority of people find the drugs/gangs/fights side of things much more interesting than a group of old women sitting eating scones and drinking tea.

The practical outcome for an average citizen are usually quite exaggerated. I live in the poorest part of the country, with relatively the highest crime rate with earthquakes occurring every now and again, but still it's not that bad to live in.

Maybe we should start a Netherlands thread, seeing how nation-threads are becoming fashionable lately?  ;D

Here in the UK, it depends on where you are, really. In Biggin Hill, where I live, it's nice, calm on an average day, but in the town's valley it's really cold, like a river of wind passes through. The people are also nice, and again, depends where ya live.

About the detective things, my favourite detective shows are Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, the 1940s ones. Both of which are set in the 1930s and 1940s.

I'm enlisting in the British army soon so I'll continue my growing up there ;) and yes, as long as UKIP and Labour don't win the elections, there should be hope :)

Lol, Cameron has cut the Defence budget to below 2% of GDP and is planning to reduce the size of the army to below 80,000. He's as weak on defence as Miliband.

UK is one of the greatest countries on the earth to live in, we have our own unique  brand of food that you won't find in many other countries. Sure we have fast food places, Chinese, Indians, etc. But we also have Sunday roasts, gammon steaks, steak and ale pies, bangers and mash, Shepard pies, fish and chips, and so on.

I'm also gonna link the General United Kingdom thread:
