Romandude made this post for the same reason girls with low self esteem make "i are so ugly hurhur" posts on facebook, so people can boast his E-peen. He probably doesnt even have a 3d program, he just wants to get attention

When you make a thread and start it with

"I need to stop sucking at modelling."

and

"I'd upload screenshots but they might be to embarassing" It smells of attention-whoring.

No I understand what you mean. It's just... Practically no one here knows the other person IRL, so it would seem incredibly sad really to try to get attention from people that you don't even know.

So with that in mind I assumed it wouldn't be the case. Yet you have people of all types, so may e you guys are right, I just couldn't imagine it though ;)

I resent that! Wings3D is while simple it work's just as well as programs like 3ds.It  does not have as many trick's as most program's bu it work's :) But yes it's simpe and easy the useand learn   ;)

I use Maya, but It's rather expensive if you cant get a student deal. I hear Blender is free, and that is decent as well.

I've tried Blender, but it looks really complicated. Perhaps if I got some extra time I might just check it again with some good tutorial. But from what I see on first eye view. It's just gonna take day's to learn to make a proper model. With Wing3D I managed to make a proper model the same day.

I can just recommend people who want to learn maya to watch documentation for it, and try ambitious projects that will force you to look for ways to solve it. That way, you'll get the basics within a week.

Blender's brilliant.
Tali, agreed Maya's good, but to be honest, you wasted your money. For an inexperienced modeller like yourself, I'd suggest Wings or Blender.
But if you have Maya, good on you. I wouldn't suggest it for other starters out, that is all.
Title: Re: 3D Modelling Discussion
Post by: Betaknight on January 09, 2013, 07:41:56 pm
Now Jarvismo you are still not as experienced as others either  ;D
So if you think you feel like learning a modeling program go ahead. It only depends on how much you can tolerate the program. If you want an easy start go on Wings or Blender. If you want a medium challenge go on Maya. If you want hard you can also choose Maya and Autodesk.

No, its not a mod. "Pax Romana" is the working title for my game, which I'm planning since 2004 :D.

Its a strategy, building, roleplay and political simulation, based during the second punic war. Its mostly in planning phase atm.. and I have some time to work on different stuff atm :)

Can we have some more info on this project, maybe a link to a website? Assuming it's not secret since you're showing lot's of models.

That is one hell of a model Hinkel! Is this Pax Romana a mod for Warband?

Thank you guys.

No, its not a mod. "Pax Romana" is the working title for my game, which I'm planning since 2004 :D.

Its a strategy, building, roleplay and political simulation, based during the second punic war. Its mostly in planning phase atm.. and I have some time to work on different stuff atm :)
:o When!?Where?!How?! and When?!?!
You are making my  my fav time in history. When i was a kid(like 6-7)i made dozens of cardboard roman houses  ;D and by "buidling"what do you mean? like those really bad free online games?or more like TW?

@Tali... I'd recommend making sure your proportions are correct.

Assuming you are making an M16A2.

If you notice from the image it looks like the barrel of your m16 should be longer, plus the stock could be more "rounded".

Most modern fps have guns of 10k+ polys. Although it can't hurt to be a bit more efficient, helps even in animation work.

Regarding the reference, I used my Airsoft M4, and then did some details from the M16-series, because the M4 stock did not seem attractive. As such, length and handguard got done maybe to fast. :)

What keeps me up and running, doing something I love and playing fun music in the background. Determination, and the thought that one day the community is thankful for having you in. But its mainly if its what you love doing then its yours like Japan likes making art. I like modeling. You might like something else. Keep trying around and see which one fits :)

I've tried to learn how to script myself but I had the lack of motivation and such.
But then I've discovered I was going to learn how to script anyway on school so I saw no use of me teaching it myself.

So now I'm trying modelling and all the motivation I need is a good idea/project and some epic music from two steps from hell.

If you mean for skins, as in re-texturing? Then you shouldn't really have wings anyway, but OpenBrf and Gimp/Photoshop. :)
On the other hand, if you wish to create something from scratch, then Wings3D will do.

Warning, witnessing my shitty modeling work may cause hemeriging, lactose intolerance, or pneumonia.

I just wanted to see how well I could model a Panzerkampfwagen VI. "Tiger" tank. I've only started 10 minutes ago, it's just the chasis atm...

Seriously, it's bad...
(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mediafire.com%2Fconvkey%2F545a%2Fav3sdqx6ume6zf6fg.jpg&hash=ba99b1f28b178055a26a3cfa9d91b9dde1645757)

As you can see, my modeling skills are minute. I've been trying to improve them by forcing myself to do "grand" projects that will kind of force me to adapt to everything...

Anyways, 10 minutes of chasis work in its... full... glory.

Edit:

I think the chasis is fine for the rough model. I think I will put a simple shape to symbolize the tracks, and save full-fledged tracks for last (as I would have to model the individual discs as well as the detail on the treads themselves.

I will probably work on the turret next, then add the MG34 port on the chasis, detail the chasis with the exhaust ports, etc. Once all turret and chasis details are done I will probably try to apply textures, THEN work on the tracks. (I don't really look forward to them, lmao)

A good idea when you start modelling is to make a cube/some other primitive and just go through all the different tools available to you, working out what they do from online resources/help section/try-and-see. One of the main reasons many other pieces of software are seen as "superior" to wings is because they automate a lot of their processes, but many of these processes are still possible provided you know what each of the tools do.

To cap what blob said (imo):
Wings3D simple but manual work
Other programs (like Maya, 3Dsmax): more tools, more thigs to do, some parts are more easier to do. Gadgets that make life easier. But too many and it gets complicated, ofcourse these have also animation and acene editors so...

GIMP for texturing.

If you can I'd look into Blender rather than Wings, simply because it's easier to progress from there to professional software.

Interesting design, But it is high poly from what I've seen. Specially the center. Try and minimize the poly(face) count on the model. Select the faces you want to delete to make one face. (Like merging. but in wings3d and faces)

Around 200 is quite high for a shield to be honest lol.

Most of that design could have been solved with a normal map, but since you're only modelling it.
I guess it's a low count.

Post by: Blobmania on August 16, 2013, 06:39:54 pm
200 polygons is not high for a shield. 200 polygons is perfectly adequate, if used correctly - Every soldier in NW has up to 10,000 polygon's worth of uniform, equipment and weaponry on show at any one time. 200 polygons for a shield is well below what might be considered acceptable for such a piece.

Not particularly, it's just a comment on what is or isn't considered an "acceptable" tri-count for a game-ready piece.  ;)

I'll try and give some constructive criticism on your piece, though I'm afraid that the road to becoming proficient at 3D art is a long one (and one that I certainly have not completed, myself).

1) First off, try and find some shields that actually existed that you'd like to model. When you first start modelling you need to experiment with all kinds of things to see what looks good (such as it seems you've done by extruding those faces on the front-facing panel of your shield), but when you're doing this properly you're mostly going to be working to historical references - you might as well get a head start on that now, rather than trying to model a concept in your head.

I was exactly the same when I first started modelling, having a vague idea in my head and then just playing around with functions to see if I came up with anything decent, but I can tell you that you'll progress much faster if you pick a source image and then try and recreate it in 3D.

2) Hard edges. Make a cube, select one or more edges, right-click, and select "Harden" (or something similar, I can't remember the exact reference term). Have a play around and see how it affects the mesh and the visible edgeflow.

Spoiler
"Hardening" edges (called "Smoothing Groups" in other software) tells your engine whether to render the edge as a curve (as in lowpoly meshes to simulate a round surface, when we all know that no "round" surface in a game is actually so), or as a straight edge (for instance, along the edge of a sword). You'll need to experiment with hard edges to get a real feel for when and where they should be used, but they are vitally important to good modelling.
[close]

3) Keep trying - You will never get anywhere with this if you give up. Just keep trying, picking new subjects and trying to craft them yourself in 3D. Don't bite off more than you can chew, but also try and stretch your boundaries enough to challenge yourself - that's the only way you're going to improve.

I hope this helps somewhat.

Regards,

 - Blob

But to get it working properly in game it needs to be triangulated which roughly doubles the polycount. Not that 400 is too much for a shield either.

Why do you have random extrusions all over it? Sorry, but it looks nothing like the reference.

Edit:And again with your German shield. Following a reference means that you actually look at the reference and make your model according to the reference.

To count the poly you need to select the whole models as faces not as obj selector. And then right click and clock triangulate. And then select the whole model again and it will tell you how much.

Alright. Given, the overcoat itself wasn't modeled, I just retextured a surcoat over mail for a large amount of it. I did have to model the bits and bobs, though.

I'm being honest. There are nice tools for metal textures and ect.

Try NDO & DDO :) Awesome software to make OP textures.
