If I can make a little suggestion : in french we say "Chef de Bataillon" and not "Chef du Bataillon"  ;)

Chef 'du' bataillon is chief of the bataillon but it's not a rank.
Chef 'de' bataillon is a rank.

About name, they were spaares of Génie de la Garde Impériale. Génie had 4 batalions, 1st nad 2nd of old guard and 3rd and 4th of young guard.
