Off Topic / Why can't we have a proper politics thread? |Discussion|
« on: September 03, 2015, 05:20:48 pm »
Can't you people just stop insulting each other and shitposting in a thread that is meant to host serious discussions? I personally believe that the ability to delete posts should be implemented in the Off-topic section, like it recently was in the regimental board. Then again it could just mean just total censorship.
What do YOU think?

History of the 37th

The regiment was raised in Ireland in 1702 by Thomas Meredith, an experienced Protestant officer who had risen to adjutant general. His regiment was posted to Flanders less than a year later and went on to fight at Blenheim (1704) and Ramilies (1706).
The regiment stayed in Europe until setting off for Canada in 1711, but later that year it lost 260 men in a shipwreck on the St Lawrence River and had to return to Britain. It remained in England and Ireland for much of the next 45 years, apart from a year spent raiding the Spanish coast in 1719 and service at Falkirk and Culloden between 1745 and 1746.
It fought throughout the American War of Independence from 1776 to 1783, during which time it was given its county designation of North Hampshire. After the British defeat, it moved to six years’ garrison duty in Canada. At the start of the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) it returned to the Low Countries, before moving on to Gibraltar in 1796 and then nine years in the West Indies from 1800.
In 1813 the regiment raised a 2nd Battalion, although this was disbanded only four years later. In the meantime, in 1814, 1st Battalion began 11 years in Canada. It was briefly back in England for a year in 1825, then the following year moved to Ireland for 17 years. These long garrison terms set the pattern for the rest of the century.

So the Dixie battle flag AND NOT the Confederate flag as some people call it,has been banned. I would like to hear the NaS community's thoughts on this matter. I believe it is a disrespect for everyone that fought sporting that very flag. Apparently in today's US free speech is only allowed when it is "Politically correct" and just because a psychopath killed 9 people the flag has to be banned and a historical element of a nation has to be removed....

History of the 5th

Tracing the combat history of the Fifth Missouri, Tucker chronicles the regiment’s actions from its inception in the summer of 1862 to its virtual demise during the Vicksburg Campaign a year later. Though the regiment’s existence as an effective, intact unit was short-lived, the men of the Fifth Missouri amassed a stellar battlefield record that was earned through fighting in some of the toughest battles of the western theater of the Civil War. According to Tucker, one of the reasons that the Fifth Missouri excelled in battle was because several of the men of the regiment had gained experience during pitched battles against Kansas Jayhawkers in the 1850s. Tucker also argues that the diversity in the backgrounds of the men of the regiment added to their toughness and morale. The fact that the Fifth Missouri was composed of St. Louis “Irishmen and pro-South Missourians of mostly Upper South ancestry” made them “a unit possessing a unique blend of an unshakable esprit de corps, resiliency, high performance level, and iron discipline”.

A drawing of the regiment's captain
Beginning with the Battle of Iuka, Kentucky, the Fifth Missouri quickly earned the reputation of an elite Confederate unit. Later, during the Battle of Corinth, the men of the Fifth Missouri overran enemy positions at Battery Powell and Fort Richardson, capturing over forty pieces of field artillery. During Ulysses S. Grant’s Mississippi campaign, the unit continuously faced overwhelming odds and difficult circumstances, performing impressively despite being poorly equipped and supplied at times. Perhaps one of the best examples of the Fifth Missouri’s tenacity in battle occurred during the Battle of Port Gibson. As the situation at Port Gibson turned against the Confederates and a retreat became necessary, the men of Company I of the Fifth Missouri engaged in a rear-guard action, and one point in the battle, seven members of the unit held off an entire Union division while the rest of the regiment retreated. Another amazing battlefield feat of the Fifth Missouri took place at the Battle of Champion’s Hill, where the Fifth Missouri earned its reputation as one of the best units on either side of the Civil War. There the regiment charged headlong into Grant’s advancing army, almost splitting the Union center in two and nearly winning the battle for the Confederacy. Time and time again, from the Battle of Iuka to the Siege of Vicksburg, the Fifth Missouri proved to be among the best fighting units of the entire Confederate army.

Hello people  of the NaS community. I've decided to dedicate this thread to historical discussion about the civil war,it's battlefields and tactics.
To start out this discussion I would like to recommend  checking out Gettysburg's National Park youtube account and videos of the park tours. I especially enjoyed videos with Matt Atkinson.
