The 62nd (Royal American) Regiment, comprising four battalions of 1,000 men each, was created in March 1756 in the American colonies to defend them against attack by the French and the indigenous peoples. Like the French Foreign Legion, the regiment comprised nationals of many countries. The regiment was renamed the 60th (Royal American) Regiment in February 1757 when the 50th and 51st regiments of foot were removed from the British Army roll after their surrender at Fort Oswego.
The regiment fought in the American Revolution, French Canada (1758 and 1759) and the West Indies. In 1797 a fifth battalion armed with Baker rifles was formed and proved very effective. The regiment took part in the Peninsula Wars of the Napoleonic era.
The name was changed to The Duke of York's Own Rifle Corps in 1824 and in 1830 to the 60th (King's Royal Rifle Corps). The regiment saw further service in Canada from 1844 as well as in the Sikh Wars.
The six service companies were posted to South Africa, disembarking at Fort Glamorgan at the mouth of the Buffalo River in October 1851 and marching to first King William’s Town and then on to Fort Hare.
In March 1852 Sir Harry Smith despatched a force comprising the 45th, 43rd and 73rd Regiments, as well as artillery and men from the 6th Regiment and 60th Rifles to clear out the Waterkloof and Amatolas. The second battalion formed part of a force under Sir Harry Smith to attack Iron Mountain. In July 1852 the regiment was again deployed to clear the Waterkloof. Thereafter the regiment was based at Fort Hare and, after peace was negotiated, largely involved in road building.
The regiment saw further service in China, Canada, Afghanistan, India and Burma.
A company of the regiment returned to South Africa in March 1879 to take part in the Zulu War. They first saw action at the battle of Gingindlovu.
In 1881 they were renamed the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.
Three battalions fought in the Anglo Boer War of 1899-1902 including the relief of Ladysmith and the battles at Talana Hill and Twin Peaks. Two officers were awarded the Victoria Cross: Lieutenant Frederick Roberts and Lieutenant Llewellyn Price-Davies.
In 1958 they were again renamed, this time the 2nd Green Jackets, The King’s Royal Rifle Corps.
