After the change of the country dominion existed from 1775only a small ducal "Infantry Corps" with purely representative tasks. At the end of the 18th century, this Knobelgarde, named after your commander Captain von Knobel, consisted of only about 50 men. With the accession to the Rhine Confederation in 1808 Oldenburg had to set up a "Confederation of Rhine Confederation contingent", which consisted mainly of foreign mercenaries. After the annexation of Oldenburg by the Empire of France, this troupe was incorporated into the Imperial French 129th Line Infantry Regiment and wiped out in the Russian campaign. After the liberation of Napoleonic rule, the duchy was reconstituted. The returned duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig introduced on Christmas day 1813 the general compulsory military service and set up an infantry corps of two battalions to four companies each. |
