Viking Conquest Clan

About the Domnann Clan in Nordic Times

Domnann: the Fir Domnann (Fir = people) appear in Irish legend as among the invaders of Ireland. They were probably related to the Dumnonii of south-west Britain and what is now the western Scottish Lowlands. The name is based on the Celtic root dumno-, meaning both “deep” and “the world”. The name occurs in Inber Domnann (Malahide Bay, Co. Dublin), and more frequently in north-west Mayo as Iorrais Domnann (Erris, Co. Mayo) and the nearby Mag Domnann and Dun Domnann. An early Irish poem describes one of their leaders as the over-king of Leinster. At Ballydavis in County Laois (within Leinster), some some 4km north-east of Portlaoise, an extensive Iron Age complex has been discovered, which bears comparison with the Celtic royal cemeteries of Cruachain and Tara. An unusual cylindrical tinned bronze box from the site is similar to one from the chariot burial of a woman at Wetwang Slack, Yorkshire. This does not necessarily imply a relationship, but does suggest contacts between north Britain and Ireland during the Late Iron Age.

Ranking system of the Domnann Clan

Thrall

New members of The Vikings and Manaraefan are ranked as Thralls. This is a short probationary period (minimum length 3 months) during which the individual will be expected to fulfil certain basic requirements before being regarded as a full member of The Vikings and Manaraefan.

Thralls have to get a basic kit together, which includes weapons for warriors, and pass a basic assessment as a villager, warrior or archer before they can progress to the next rank.

Fri-hals

A Fri-hals is a full member of The Vikings and Manaraefan who is recognised as having attained a minimum standard of competence whilst not as yet having earned the right to vote on Society issues.

If they wish to rise to the next rank they must take further skills assessments and improve the standard and variety of their kit.  Some people are happy to stay as Fri-hals but most people move on.

Drengr

The Drengr comprise the backbone of The Vikings and Manaraefan, those members who have proved both their abilities and their commitment and who now have a say in the running of The Vikings and Manaraefan and a vote in Society decisions.

Many people stay at this rank but continue to develop their skills and “characters”.  Though they are a Drengr for administrative purposes within The Vikings and Manaraefan they may well be found portraying anything from the slave to king.

Thegn

Thegn is a rank and office.  The latter describes a Drengr who is carrying out an official function within The Vikings or Manaraefan, the former is a rank conferred by the Konungr (King) as a reward for good service.  Office holders who resign revert to Drengr but the rank is conferred for life or until a greater honour is awarded.

Thegns are the backbone of the administration of  The Vikings and Manaraefan.

Jarl

Jarl is a rank and office.  The latter describes a Drengr (sometimes, but not always, a Thegn) who is a Herred within The Vikings or holding a senior administrative office within The Vikings, the former is a rank conferred by the Konungr (King) as a reward for good service.  Office holders who resign revert to Drengr or Thegn but the rank is conferred for life or until a greater honour is awarded.

Jarls provide leadership and direction to the Herreds.

Sturaesman

Sturaesman is the office held by the leaders of Lethangs, when a Lethang lead attains Herred status the Sturaesman takes up the office of Jarl.

When the Jarl of a Herred stands down his successor is a Sturaesman for at least a year before they are raised up to the office of Jarl.

Hersir

The rank of Hersir is held by those that have proven themselves capable of leading warriors in battle.

Warrior of Renown

This will be given out to people who deserve it.

A warrior with a specific skill set and particular set of kit who abides by a special code of conduct.

About the Black Brunswickers in the Napoleonic Wars

In 1806 the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Charles William Ferdinand, was fatally wounded during the Prussian defeat at the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt. Following Prussia's defeat and the collapse of the Fourth Coalition against Napoleon, his duchy remained under French control. Rather than permit the Duke's heir, Frederick William, to succeed to his father's title, Napoleon seized the duchy and, in 1807, incorporated it into his newly created model Kingdom of Westphalia ruled by his brother Jérôme. Two years later in 1809 the Fifth Coalition against Napoleon was formed between the Austrian Empire and the United Kingdom. The dispossessed Frederick William, who had been a strenuous critic of French domination in Germany, seized this opportunity to seek Austrian help to raise an armed force. To finance this venture he mortgaged his principality in Oels. In its initial incarnation (dated to 25 July 1809), the 2300-strong 'free' corps consisted of two battalions of infantry, one Jäger battalion, a company of sharpshooters, and a mixed cavalry contingent including Hussars and Uhlans.

Later that same year Frederick William led his Schwarze Schar ("Black Host") into Germany, and succeeded in briefly taking control of the city of Brunswick, earning his corps its epithet: the Black Brunswickers. He was soon driven out, but managed to flee with his troops to England where he joined his cousin and brother-in-law, the Prince-regent (later King George IV). During the next few years, the Brunswickers earned themselves a sound reputation through service with the British in the Peninsular Campaign. However, steady attrition in battles and skirmishes through Portugal and Spain, combined with a lack of political support and financial difficulties, led to a situation where the unit's imminent disbandment looked likely.
