Awesome match. But WTF, Pepe? That was almost Zidane level.
Okay, it wasn't, but still worthy of a red card

This is awesome. I look forward to discovering the fun things you weren't actually intended to do in BCoF!

I have just started "All Quiet on the Western Front" and have loved it so far.

I have also started "Propyläen Weltgeschichte" (1961-65), a book series about the history of the world in eleven volumes, although I seem to lack the last volume... each volume has about 600-700 pages, so I need to allocate some time for reading. I plan to have read all of it by the end of 2015, though!

General Discussion / Re: [Suggestion] Realism/Arcade Game Types
« on: May 29, 2014, 06:28:41 pm »
With the FPS that cover the current era, there are arcade games and more realistic ones -- there is no such distinction for ACW FPS since, as far as I know, there are no ACW FPS (at least no recent ones). I'm sure that making different levels of realism possible would hugely enlargen the audience. You would be able to pull in the hardcore realism players from RO2, Rising Storm etc. while also attracting the more casual players.

BUT: The level of realism must not be preset by the game, but rather be configurable by the server admins themselves, as suggested by others in this thread!

Merci beaucoup!

The Haitian Revolution led by Toussaint L'Ouverture was the only slave rebellion to result in the founding of a state, which, in my opinion, is fascinating.

Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck wasn't the greatest general of all time and some of his deeds may seem controversial, but his knowledge of the area (German East Africa) and the guerilla warfare were truly one-of-a-kind in WWI. His troops consisted mainly of African askaris who knew how to traverse the lands. He never lost a battle.

But: Lettow-Vorbeck supported General von Trotha's use of genocidal warfare in the uprisings of the Herero and Nama. He also made friends with Jan Christiaan Smuts, a major supporter of apartheid.

Still, he helped his former askaris gain their pay and pension. He also seemed to have an ambivalent relationship to the Nazis, occasionally giving speeches at their rallies until 1938, but he was forbidden from talking publicly by propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels because of his deep respect for his askaris.

When offered an ambassadorship by Hitler:  "'I understand that von Lettow told Hitler to go fuck himself.' The nephew responded, 'That's right, except that I don't think he put it that politely.'" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_von_Lettow-Vorbeck#Post-war_career). (I don't know if this is confirmed, and it seems kind of unlikely for someone to insult Hitler and get away with it. But true or not, it makes for a nice anecdote.)

This is a clip from 1964 of some of L.-V.'s former askaris honouring him after his death:
Translation to the best of my ability: "Us old gentlemen are here for remembrance. We cannot forget our old Lettow-Vorbeck and we wish for Mister Lettow-Vorbeck not to forget us. We, the German soldiers, we fear God, but nothing else in the world."

Historical Discussion / Re: Favourite Historic Battles!

What I find very interesting about the Battle of Leipzig a.k.a. Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig (Battle of Nations at Leipzig) between France and a coalition of Prussia, Russia, Austria and Sweden is that Jean Bernadotte, a former marshal under Napoleon, now fought on the side of the coalition with the Swedish forces that he lead himself. He was the newly elected heir presumptive of the sickly King of Sweden (Bernadotte, an early proponent of the French Revolution, allegedly had "mort aux rois!", literally "death to kings!" tattooed across his chest, which I find very ironic).

Another interesting event that occured during this battle was the defection of over 5000 Saxon and Württembergian troops that originally fought on the French side. Saxony and Württemberg both were part of the Confederation of the Rhine and became Kingdoms following the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806. After the Battle of Leipzig, many member states of the Confederation of the Rhine joined the coalition against Napoleon until the Confederation was finally dissolved by the coalition in November 1813, making the member states independent.
