What do you mean by SJW, though? I actively write letters and try to help better the situation of those in my community, so in that sense I would be a SJW. In another sense, I am not a tumblr-esque SJW, simply someone who cares about justice in the world.

I think SJW in this sense is used primarily referring to tumblr/facebook activists, and people of that general breed. Real community activists are respectable people. SJWs are not.

"Social Justice Warrior" is and has always been just a buzzword to discredit anyone feminist and people who speak out against oppression. 
The SJW's described by this word usually don't make a real difference in their life and other peoples lives, all they do is complain on the internet.

We should remember though that free speech exists as a legal concept which is quite important for us to support.
People need to remember the days of the free speech fights where jails were filled with people for merely speaking out.
