General Discussion / Re: What units would you want to see?
« on: January 01, 2013, 02:38:05 am »
Lances didn't appear until after 1815 (1817, I believe). And though some regiments were named to hussars and got new uniforms, their weapons and tactics stayed exactly the same.
Britain used Lancers at the time in its colonies, generally Indian regiments that would never have seen action outside their home country. Some Light Dragoon regiments were converted into Lancers after the Napoleonic Wars, as you said, in, it would seem 1816. They ended up adopting the European fashions for these regiments (particularly the Polish Czapka) but kept some of their distinctions from their time as Light Dragoon regiments, such as the 17th's white facings (that they originally complained would subject them to friendly fire.)

The British had about seven hussar regiments though, including the three Kings German Legion regiments. I'm eternally going to say that at least one of them should be added. After all, as said, Russia has two lancer regiments, Austria has two dragoon regiments and France has three heavy cavalry regiments.

Seem like good people. Very french, mind.

Played with some of your Cuirassiers on cavalry groupfighting, honourable, skilled and overall fun to play with.

Das Boot

Definitely my favourite film, funny, harrowing and very emotional at times.

As for the others floating around my head.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford is great, fantastic cinematography and soundtrack as well.
In Bruges is both hilarious and tragic at the same time.
Black Hawk Down and Troy are both films I'll watch at any given opportunity as well.

Two British officers in the family at current, both Majors. One worked as a squaddie in Kosovo and Northern Ireland before going to Sandhurst and they've both been to Iraq and Afghanistan several times. All I know in the historical terms is that no-one in my family who went to fight in the world wars came back.

Historical Discussion / Re: Sabers

I'd love a 1796 light cavalry sabre myself, I actually have the drill manual for it, and I think my collection would benefit from a sabre.

Of course, french weapons were more designed for the thrust. Clean and precise kills, British swords were made for maiming and hacking.

Since you already mentioned the 1796 Light Sabre I'll have to one up you slightly.

Too beautiful not to share, really

Historical Discussion / Re: Writing a book

I'm trying to write an alternate history set in a napoleonic wars where women are accepted into the army.
It's a goofy concept, but it's interesting to think about what the effects of such would be.

Centred around my hussar character, but due to my usual problems with motivation it's not very far along.

For Mongoose's original question though, you might want to look up Rifleman Harris' memoirs, since they're the only ones from the perspective of an enlisted man.

Suggestions & Bug Reports / Re: british cav??

The Light Dragoons aren't awful, but they're in an awkward place, it'd be nice to have an actual unit of light, melee centred cavalry for the British.
It's not like they didn't have them, 4 Hussar Regiments and the KGL Hussar Regiments as well.

The 7th Hussars!
Their uniforms are altogether much nicer than the 15ths, in the era NW is set in it was all dark blue with gold lace.
The 15th had red facings at this point, with silver lace, I think, not a good match if you ask me.

Anything but the 10th, I never took to hussars in shakoes.

Good fun tonight, hopefully we'll be playing cavalry again next week. If not I'll probably come back when there is a free spot for us, was good stuff.
