History:
Raised from the Six Independent Companies (Highland Watch) that made up the "police force" of the unruly and troublesome Highlands. The 43rd Regiment of Foot was created. A group intended to become a fully-fledged Regiment of the British army. However, this Regiment was made up of the gentlemen of the Highlands - chief’s sons and other relatives - who were used to somewhat cushy lives, even as Highland Watch men who's hardest task was to be simply be seen.

"...it was no uncommon thing to see private soldiers riding to the exercising ground followed by servants carrying their firelocks and uniforms"

These gentlemen soon realised, though, that there officers and drill-masters were to make real soldiers out of them. They too were told they may be being shipped to the West Indies. Mutiny ensued. This mutiny was soon put aside, whose core was made up of the Highland gentry themselves. The Regiment soon found themselves at the Battle of Fontenoy were they lost huge numbers of men but showed great prowess in battle. During these events, though, the Jacobite Rising occurred and the 43rd Regiment of Foot was shipped to Ireland were they were renumbered the 42nd Regiment of Foot.

A glimpse at the tartan of the Black Watch

Napoleonic Wars:
During the Napoleonic Wars, the 42nd Regiment of Foot fought from Egypt to Spain and through to Waterloo. In Egypt the 42nd captured an Imperial Eagle, in Spain the 1st Battalion's stalwart defence saved the lives of other Regiment's and that of the military theorist and Scottish general John Moore. In Belgium the 42nd gained huge fame and love from Wellington himself at the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo. The 42nd was at the chaotic Battle of Quatre Bras on 16 June 1815 and was one of four battalions mentioned in dispatches by Wellington. Two days later at the Battle of Waterloo, the 42nd and also the 2nd/73rd Highlanders, which was to become the 2nd Battalion, Black Watch, were both in some of the most intense fighting in the battle and lost 289 men. It is said that without Quatre Bras there would never have been a Battle of Waterloo.

Further Information:
During its life and to this day, the 42nd has carried - with pride - the epithet "Am Freiceadan Dubh " [Pro;Am RAYCH-kiten Doo] "The Black Watch". This name comes from the Regiment's Independent Companies (Highland Watch) forebears. The etymology and history of this nickname may not have come from its dark tartan - considering that the scarlet jacket they wore was bright. But, comes from "black", or "dubh" being a character description and that in Highland culture "black" also means "dour" and when the "Highland Watch" was first levied folk  of the Highlands - clansmen and family of said watch - felt the watchmen were being traitorous. The Black Watch has had a long tradition of loyalty to the Church. It's first Chaplain, Dr Adam Ferguson, accompanied it in every battle and led it in worship, daily, both in peace and war.

Regimental Collect:

O God, whose strength setteth fast the mountains,
Lord of the hills to whom we lift our eyes:
Grant us grace that we, of The Black Watch,
Once chosen to watch the mountains of an earthly
kingdom, may stand fast in the faith and be strong,
until we come to the heavenly Kingdom of him,
who had bidden us to watch and pary.
Thy Son, our Saviour and Lord.
Amen

About Us & Recruitment

Founded on the 10th of April 2012 from veterans of the Mount&Musket mod of Warband, choosing to represent the most senior and - arguably - most famous Highland Regiment - the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment - the Black Watch. Through comradeship and a combination of "play for fun" and historical immersion the Regiment since established itself as a leading Regiment within the NW community. With a deep sense of historical appreciation of Highland infantry, immersion and discipline we structure our Regiment through the use of historically accurate ranks and formations. Upon acceptance of enlistment we provide our recruits with a Field Manual, that explains the basics of the Regiment, our codes of conducts and hand-made drawings of our formations.

King's and Regimental Colours of the Black Watch

With more than two years experience in Linebattle gaming the Regiment is a strong, solid unit which boasts good attendance and performances at Events and Linebattles. The 42nd prides itself on a sense of friendship and community, being much more than a Regiment we are a gaming community which plays many other games outside of Warband. While we realize it is only a game the history and appreciation of the historical 42nd and modern Black Watch is never far away.

'In a Highland Regiment every individual feels that his conduct is the
subject of observation and that, independently of his duty, as one member of a systematic whole he has
a separate and individual reputation to sustain, which will be reflected on his family and
district or glen.
'
- A 19th Century Black Watch historian

"Twa recruiting sergeants came frae the Black Watch,
Through markets and fairs, some recruits for to catch,
But all they enlisted was forty and twa,
Sae, list my bonnie laddie and come awa with me...

...Pit a feather tae your bonnet, and a kilt aboon your knee,
Enlist my bonnie laddie and come awa with me."

A glimpse at the tartan of the Black Watch

World War I:

The Black Watch was reformed in 1881 when the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment of Foot - The Black Watch was combined with the 73rd Regiment of Foot to form two battalions of the new Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). The Regiment expanded at an unprecedented rate during the First World War. The recruitment campaign with the message "Your country needs YOU" caused a flood of over 30,000 men to join. During the First World War over 50,000 men served in the 25 battalions of the Black Watch. They were made up of Regular (generally referring to the 1st and 2nd), Territorial (made up of part-time volunteers) and the Service Battalions (made of men recruited into Kitchener's New Army, these included the "Pal Battalions").

The Battle Honours awarded reflected the famous actions in which the battalions took part. In France and Flanders there were the battles of the Marne, Yrpes and the Somme. Battalions of the Black Watch fought all across Europe, the Balkans and Greece along with action in Mesopotamia. The 6th Battalion was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French Government. This was for actions at Bois de Courton and Chambrecy in 1918. When the war came to an end in November 1918. The Black Watch had lost 8,000 men. More than 20,000 had been wounded.

The Regiment has since gone through the rocks and weathered many storms, nearly crashing and coming to an end once or twice. However through comradeship and combination of "play for fun" and historical immersion the Regiment has come out the better through it's trials. With a sense of historical appreciation and immersion, we can structure our Regiment through the use of historically accurate Ranks and formations. Now, while we realize it is only a game the history and appreciation of the historical 42nd and modern Black Watch is never far away. Now the Regiment is a strong, solid unit which boasts good attendance and performances at Events and Linebattles. The 42nd prides itself of a sense of friendship and community, being much more than a Regiment we present ourselves as a gaming community which, infact, play 90% of game-time outside of Warband. While discipline and structure is used during Training, Events and Linebattles we still retain an ethos of banter and relaxation in TeamSpeak and within the community in general.

Víkingr Event:

By the year 968 AD war had been waged for generations between the Goídil natives of Ireland and settlers from the north. After the first years of the great onslaught on the English kingdoms many great battles were fought between the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy kings and the Viking invaders, and soon Norse warfleets were seen in the Irish Sea itself. Rowing up the rivers to raid the Gaelic villages and monasteries, the "Ostmen" soon established the longphorts, shore fortresses to harbour their fleets, which evolved into powerful cities controlling the lands.

Yet the warlike Goídil did not yield their homelands and many tribes resisted the foreign invaders in long and scathing wars, with Viking and Gaelic villages burning likewise in the many raids. Others approached the Norse with agreements and trade, some even fighting their neighbouring tribes with the help of their new allies and rising to great power. And so the Viking cities soon were part of the ancient tribal struggles for power, in which the most powerful Goídil kings were aspiring to no less than the old title of high kingship over all Ireland.

The Víkingr Shieldwall Event channels will be locked and then unlocked at around 6.45pm GMT and people will be asked to join the channel of the faction they wish to play, either Engle or Norðmenn. After this balancing will commence, looking at the numbers of players in each channel we will decide if balancing is needed. If not the channels will be locked and the server password will be handed out.

If you are late and wish to take part poke or contact an Admin and they will decide if you can participate and which team. If the password for channels and Server is handed out by anyone other than an Admin then the player and the "pass-giver" will be banned and their participation of future Events will  be questioned. However, at roughly half-way through the Event we will take a short break for late comers to enter.

Shieldwall Event Rules

Víkingr rules are Víkingr rules and should always be adhered to as well as the general Vikingr Community rules and practices. The Shieldwall Event Server will use the basic rules found on the Official Víkingr Server Hrafnabjóðr's welcome message.

The old tried and tested Shieldwall Event rules will be used. This will mean shieldwalls must be formed, followed and organised by both sides including all class types. Archers may step a little away from the wall to acquire a dangerous angle onto the enemy wall, however they will be under scrutiny and their distance will be watched.

  • The usual long established community and Server Víkingr Rules must be followed.

  • Players must keep to their Faction's wall, whether they are at the front, second or fifth row. It doesn't matter, you are part part of the Shieldwall Event, so be apart of it.

  • Players must listen to and obey their commander's orders as would be done in the Official Víkingr Historical Events, not their Clan or Group leader. Leaders are chosen for their knowledge and experience, so their droning voices are actually words of wisdom and must be followed.

  • Archers or designated flankers may move a little away from their Faction's Wall to gain an advantage on their enemy, however abuse of this will mean immediate removal from the Archer class or removal from the Event.

  • You are expected to be there on time, if you are not you will be unlikely to participate, if you are extremely late you will not be able to attend. Simple. Yes, this is a rule.

    Shieldwall Event

    Introduction

There has been some discussion amongst certain members of the Víkingr community for the reintroduction of a more regularly occurring Shieldwall event. The event will be scheduled for a specific day each month, with an emphasis on ease of access and participation for interested players. The sign up process should be relaxed, as should the setting up of and running of the involved server. It should also be noted that this reoccurring event should never replace the historically-devised battles as they are a staple of the Víkingr experience.

With the use of one TeamSpeak and of a different server, we hope to have a hassle-free, well organised return of the Víkingr Shieldwall Event! Events will hopefully be held on a Sunday, hopefully the first Sunday of each month at 7pm GMT.

    Information

    When?:Sunday, 2nd of June, 7pm GMT.

    Organisation

    Administration

In a phrase, "no nonsense". That is the way this event will be administrated and organised. Admins, organisers and faction leaders are taking their time out to create this event and make sure all runs smoothly without any drama. If there is drama, it will be dealt with immediately and harshly. If you wish to troll and disrupt then play Native, nor are long time members of Víkingr above the rules. Failure to attend after signing up without decent notice will result in becoming black-listed. Failure to adhere to the rules will result in your removal from the event after a previous warning and your participation in future events will be questioned. Ultimately, admin decision is final, however if you feel wronged please PM any of the admins or contact them on Steam and we will hear your case.

It is up to you to learn the rules, learn which TeamSpeak is being used and which channel or Faction you are in. If you are unsure, ask!

    Admins:

In Game Name: Ualraig Fir Áraig (Steam)

In Game Name: Eiríkr rauðskegg (Steam)

In Game Name: Þorkell Erlinga (Steam)

In Game Name: Heregár the Clever (Steam)

    Team Organisation

Each team forms a tight and organized shieldwall and the teams draw up to throwing distance of each other, exchange javelins and insults then clash in an epic 11th Century clash of spear and shield! Simple! Each team will be made up of infantry, one or more dedicated archers and a Host Leader who will lead his side to victory or defeat. A banner-man may be chosen by the Host Leader at the time of the event. Players must take only Infantry and not Archer or Leader Class unless told to do so.

    Game Modes

For now the following few weeks will be the bread-and-butter shieldwall meat-grinder - i.e kill the bad people. In the future though, other game types have been talk about stuck as Capture the Banner, where your team must kill the standard-barer of the enemy and take their flag to your spawn and something along the lines of Monk'y Business involving the Admin-spawnable Monk outfit. All this is yet to be decided though.

    Participation

Participation could not be easier! You need to simply be present on time! You are expected to be on the Event's TeamSpeak: 176.9.103.48:9986 by 6.30pm GMT at the latest, please come earlier as this would make life for Admins easier, but will also ensure you can take part and not miss out on a space!

When you join the TeamSpeak you must join the Team 1 channel under the Hrafnabjóðr spacer.

Rules

    General Rules

Víkingr rules are Víkingr rules and should always be adhered to as well as the general Vikingr Community rules and practices. The Shieldwall Event Server will use the basic rules found on the Official Víkingr Server Hrafnabjóðr's welcome message.

If you sign up, either as an individual or as a group you are expected to be there, if you are not you will be black-listed, if you are extremely late you will not be able to attend, if you arrive and did not sign up you will be placed on a waiting list to fill any unfulfilled slots

    Shieldwall Event Rules

The old tried and tested Shieldwall Event rules will be used. This will mean shieldwalls must be formed, followed and organised by both sides including all class types. Archers may step a little away from the wall to acquire a dangerous angle onto the enemy wall, however they will be under scrutiny and their distance will be watched.

    • The usual long established community and Server Víkingr Rules must be followed.

    • Players must keep to their Faction's wall, weather they are at the front, second or fifth row.

    • If you sign up, either as an individual or as a group you are expected to be there on time, if you are not you will be black-listed, if you are extremely late you will not be able to attend. Simple. Yes, this is a rule.
