Hey, I've met that guy in the red/white spangenhelm.
He was King David when we did the Battle of the Standard at Kelmarsh, seemed like a cool guy, got really into it and got people to drag him away from the battle when our army routed.
Some of the cavalry guys look familiar too.

So many cringes in that gallery though. So many farbs with rusty gear. All those lopsided helmets. Leather vambraces hghghnghnnn.

But seriously, rust makes me want to smack a bitch.
Crawling back to you,
Ever thought of calling when you've had a few? 'cause I always do.

i know that for the reenactment of Hastings, everything, and i mean everything, must be accurate within a 15 year period from 1050 to 1066.

Leather vambraces don't appear in any historical source that I know of, and I don't even think I've seen any osprey style modern drawings that feature them. As far as I can tell they're just from D&D/Hollywood because both consider it sacrilege to show someone's wrist.

Wearing a spangenhelm with the noseguard sticking out like a duck's bill is just wrong and letting your gear rust is just completely moronic, especially when it's so easy to prevent.

Maille was (and still is) expensive as hell, and your life relies on it, you're not gonna let rust eat through it because you had to wear it in the rain. You're gonna coat it in oil and if it does happen to rust despite that, you scour it clean - if you're a Knight you're lucky enough to have a squire who can put your maille in a barrel of sand and roll it around.

Letting your sword rust is a great way to make sure the blade's gonna fall off and get you slaughtered too.

Look after your gear, kids.

true, good point.

but the people who had the wealth to own mail wouldnt have maintained it themselves, they would get slaves or other people to do it for them...

Now that is done, I will scour the internet for my face :p I was in the left flank of the saxon side on sunday, and in the scripted fight, it was absolute chaos, so glad no-one got injured by one of the horses, the charge, as planned ended in much death, but I must say we put up a poor fight. Anyway the conversations we had while we waited were great XD they decided the woman from the voice-over should narate porn, and the conversation went on... Needless to say the back of my shield never looked so interesting XD As for the unscripted fight, wicker and valhala held the right flank of the normans, yet they died so quickly to our spearmen, the total battle lasting 4 mins -saxons victorious. Anyhow, next year should be even more epic, we had maybe 200 infantry on both sides, with maybe 20 cav and 20 archers on the normans? I'm not sure, but pretty sure the saxons had more than 1 archer in the actual battle...

With regard to the 950th anniversery, I heard a rumour about us doing it in the actual location, aka the roundabout outside battle abbey XD at least it avoids those accursed mounds...

I don't do re-enactment and I've never been to see one before, but I live close by and I've decided I'll definitely come to watch. I'm assuming you're all referring to the English Heritage event? They're saying there's going to be over a thousand reenactors:

http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/whats-on/battle-15-oct/

So I have a question-which day is the battle going to be reenacted? They sell tickets for Sat 15th and Sun 16th Oct. Or is it going to be done on both days?

I am guessing both days. I have done Napoleonic stuff in the past and events usually last two days, the Saturday and the Sunday (not counting late Friday's when everything is set up). I have not been to a proper Medieval Re-enactment for years (not counting Country Fairs and things) but again they usually last two days.

Yeah it's over both days, from what I've heard we'll be doing morning skirmishes, archery displays, kiddie vike and then the main event mid afternoon. Last year there were two fights in the afternoon, the first acting out history, and the second to see which side would win on skill, ie an unscripted fight. As for how many there, I heared rumour of there being more reenacters there than there was in the original battle, this might not be true but it'll be close. Last year there was about 2-3 thousand I believe, about 85% infantry, the rest spread between cavalry and archers

Alright, update on what I said it looks like there should be about 900 reenacters from the English vike, and possibly 1.3k in total, so not as big as I was told. Anyway I've been told to get there on Thursday because we have something happening early Friday, and that we're leaving on the mid Sunday so I'm guessing events all Friday Saturday and Sunday morning- some of this may not be for public viewing, so go by the dates on English heritages page. Anyhow, if anyone is coming, either to visit or take part, see you there ;) might post my shield on here later idk
