Title: Boxing Thread
Post by: MarshalKim on February 26, 2015, 07:00:39 pm
So I don't expect this thread to be popular but I thought I'd give it a "shot".

I'll start off with the obvious.

"Fight of the Century" May 2nd: Floyd "Money" Mayweather vs Manny "Pac-man" Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather:
Spoiler
A lot of people find him cocky and want to see him lose + has a lot of fans that like him for the wrong reasons.
[close]

Manny Pacquiao:
Spoiler
A peoples hero and is considered humble by many especially his fans. Is a suspect fighter that gained a new "prime" around 30 years old.
A lot of people, boxers included think he's on or has been on PED's.
[close]

Both respected technicians with different styles.

Floyd:
Spoiler
http://youtu.be/bQYeSXpC244
[close]
Passive counter puncher. Doesn't take punishment and can create his own opportunities with probe punches and feints.

Manny:
Spoiler

[close]
An excellent southpaw that knows every Orthodox boxing trick. Very rare combination.

If this thread picks up then I'll talk about other boxers and upcoming fights.

Pacquiao vs Marquez.

I really hope Pacquiao wins.

Floyd is cocky but if Manny was on PED's during that streak.
I dunno man I find it hard to cheer for him.

As for styles I def have an edge for Floyd.

That being said I really want to see Golovkin vs Cotto.

Have you done any amateur fights?

Do you train often and take boxing seriously?

Actually have, and I am going to be in an MMA contest next Friday, mostly boxing and Jiu Jitsu. I do take it very seriously.

Awesome.

Have any tips to develop explosiveness for punching?

Good luck btw.

Pretty simple actually. Never lock your elbow, EVER. When you punch make sure you punch like a tiger, very quick, without locking your elbow, and very important, USE YOUR BODY!
When you punch, stand a bit sideways with your strong leg a bit behind your weak one, and make sure to not lock your knees, bend them a bit.
After all the preparations, you stand side ways and all, make sure your punching hand's shoulder moves a bit forward with your punch, so it will defend your open side when you punch. Keep the same stance you had before. And most importantly, don't be afraid of the pain, and you will punch twice as powerful.
Thank you mate. :)

Sorry I know how to punch I meant training exercises.

I think I might have some good power for my weight class. A boxer told me I could fight at 150. Yet I'm 6'2

I've played a lot of baseball and hockey and had a big slapshot in hockey. Pitched a bit in baseball and have played some golf so I actually pay a lot of attention to wait transfer and find every area to send power to my fist. It's a bit like getting dressed in my opinion. Power starts down low in the feet. I've Golovkins pivots apparently its old style technique I can really see the power in his punches.

Not an expert here but I think training my wrists and shoulders would be a good idea.

Anyways. Any general ideas about training or specific ways to do even simple things like push ups or squats would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance btw.

Oh I got you haha.
2 exercises I find good:
1. Push ups with fists closed. As much as you can. Strengthens both the fist itself and your arms.
2. Any routine that works on chest and shoulders, pull ups and ect.

And just do some punching bag work for 5 rounds of 3 minutes each, 1 round hard punches one round medium punches.

I've started doing those today actually.

I'm planning on getting my own bag very soon.
Anything I should know about a bag and what to look for in them?

Is foam better then sand?

Go for sand. The only downside is that it can leak. I like sand better because, really, it's like punching a brink. It's so tough.

I used to box at my old gym (if anyone says I box for England I'm jumping off a bridge). I competed in the New Jersey Silver Gloves tournament and won with a walkover since they couldn't get me an opponent.

Although nobody probably knows who I'm talking about, I liked Jason Booth (Boothie), who was a family friend of ours.

People are afraid to fight him. Hes high risk low reward. (you wont make tons of money to get clowned and get an L and lose a belt if you have one)
Hes not very active because of the previous reason and because his management is stupid.

Many Americans just like guys who are welterweights and above who wear gloves and they can relate to because of racial background.
They usually care about heavyweights.

That's a shame, he's 35 too so he's probably not going to get any big chances.
