About Us

Pike's Brigade, consisting of the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles, 1st Creek Mounted Rifles, 1st Choctaw & Chickasaw, 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles, and Welch's Texas Cavalry Company, is a North American, European, and Australian regiment consisting of experienced players from across the genre: from Holdfast; War of Rights; Napoleonic Wars & Warband; and others. We aim to achieve the ideal mixture of competitive and casual regiments, offering every member the opportunity to invest as much or as little time in our group as they please. Our schedule fluctuates, and we cater to our member's availability-- we will always strive to have an event you can attend if you want one.
Apart of the Free Company gaming community, Pike's Brigade is our first step into Battlecry of Freedom, and we are eager to expand our community with likeminded individuals of all backgrounds who want to play games and build an online community.

Unit History

The beginnings of the brigade begin with Albert Pike's negotiations with the Five Civilized Tribes of Oklahoma. There he would enter in numerous treaties with the Indians, and saw the formation of Indian regiments for the purpose of defending the Indian Territory. Therefore, The Indian Brigade was formed under Pike at the behest of General Van Dorn of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi, which the Indian Territory fell under. Numbering 1,000 men prior to the battle of Pea Ridge, most of the Indian troops would abandon their posts after being disorganized in the battle of Leetown, where artillery forced them to scatter. Following the battle of Pea Ridge, Federal soldiers were found allegedly scalped, and thus the Brigade and Pike met heavy criticism.^Source

Albert Pike

Born in Boston Massachusetts on December 29th, 1809, Albert Pike was a poet, educator, Freemason, and member of the supreme court of Arkansas. During his career in law, he represented the Creek and Choctaw against the United States government and learned numerous Indian dialects. He personally opposed secession, but remained loyal to his state, and would be commissioned to the rank of Brigadier General. Pike was overall, considered a poor military leader, and would later resign due to Confederate pressure to use the Indian regiments for use other than defensive measures. Source

Stand Watie, Degataga

Born in Georgia, Stand Watie, born Degataga, meaning 'Stand Firm,' grew up wealthy and received a Western education from the local Christian clergy. He was given the baptismal name Isaac, but adopted 'Stand Watie' as a mixture of his American and Cherokee names. Watie would join the Confederate army in 1861 as a Colonel of the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles. He would be elected as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation during the war after the first Chief, John Ross, fled North. During the war he attacked both Union soldiers and pro-Federal Cherokee resistance. He would be promoted to Brigadier General for his bravery in 1864, becoming the highest ranking Indian in the Confederate Army. By the end of the war, Watie would be the last Confederate commander to surrender to the Union forces in June, 1865. Source
