That is exactly the opposite of true. Royal Marines only wore their knapsacks when at sea, or when moving on to, off of or between ships. For landing operations, they'd carry everything they needed wrapped inside their coat roll (which was worn across the body a la the Russians). Everything that didn't go in the cartridge pouch or haversack, at least.
