Oh God

I meant he holds two hands at the hilt, while I thought you would hold the very begin of the blade as well.

Really makes my opinion on the average intelligence of the Americans go up...

Yes, let's judge Americans based on a show made for the lowest common denominator. It has already been established that the show is shit, just like nearly everything else on television that tries to teach about weapons or history.

I was being slĂghtly sarcastic.

Why would you do that? When you hit armor or a hard object, instant finger loss? Also, when you hold it at the hilt, you gain in leverage, thus increasing the inpact force

The base of a blade was often blunted so you could push your hand onto it for extra force. Basic physics. It's easier to use more force if you're pushing down from higher up on the object.

I protest. The odd episode or two that Mythbusters do about weaponry are usually pretty factual, and I've learnt a decent amount from them :D

For instance, did you know that you can cut down a tree with a minigun?
Spoiler

If a cat sits in a box in the woods and no-one is around to hear it, is it alive?

Hehe, you can also kill a fish in a barrel, and destroying the barrel at the same time =D

Guys in the blades episode they made numerous mistakes.
For the Longsword it was a 18th century sword used for duels and was thus way to light use in actual combat.
The armour they used the swords on had the strenght of a piece of paper.

And for the ice a Katana's blade is thicker than a longsword and that is why it can cut through the ice so easily.

But this doesn't make it more lethal than the longsword. A longsword was designed to cut through bones and in the proces shattering them leaving a nasty wound.

Also, they mention it like it is a bastard sword, aren't longswords standard 2 handed?

Yes, the sword in this video can be used as a one-handed.
