History of House Mormont

House Mormont of Bear Island is an old, proud, and honorable house of the north, one of the principal families sworn to House Stark. Their seat is at Bear Island, located in the Bay of Ice far to the north-west of Winterfell. Their blazon is a black bear over a green wood and their motto is "Here We Stand".
House Mormont is one of the few houses to have an ancestral weapon of Valyrian steel: a bastard sword called Longclaw. However, due to Bear Island's lack of valuable resources, the Mormonts are a rather poor house. Their hall is made of huge logs, surrounded by an earthen palisade. On the gate is a carving of a woman in a bearskin with a child in one arm suckling at her breast and a battleaxe in the other. Like the other women of Bear Island, the women of House Mormont learn how to defend themselves from ironmen and wildlings.
Legend has it that King in the North Rodrik Stark won Bear Island in a wrestling match (presumably from the ironborn king who controlled it at the time) and gave it to the Mormonts.
Presumably, when Lord Eddard Stark called his banners, to fight in Robert's Rebellion, Lord Jeor Mormont led the Bear Island men to war. Jeor eventually abdicated his lordship to join the Night's Watch and was succeeded by his son, Jorah. In 288 AC, Jeor was chosen as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Jorah went on to earn fame in Greyjoy's Rebellion and the subsequent tourney at Lannisport in 289 AC. However, he was driven from the north by Lord Eddard in 293 AC, after selling poachers to a Tyroshi slaver in order to pay for the tastes of his wife, Lynesse Hightower. Jorah fled to the Free Cities and was succeeded by his aunt, Jeor's sister, Maege. Lady Mormont's heir is Dacey, a tall, lanky warrior-woman.

Brunswickers During the Battle of Waterloo

Sunday 18 June, the Duke of Wellington positioned his Anglo-Allied Army along a ridge near the village of Waterloo, in order to block Napoleon's advance along the road to Brussels. The Brunswick Corps formed part of Wellington's Reserve Corps, under his personal command. In that capacity, they were kept well behind the crest of the ridge and avoided casualties during the opening French bombardment. In the early part of the afternoon, the British Foot Guards moved down the slope to reinforce the Château d'Hougoumont, which was under fierce French attack; the Brunswick Corps was brought forward to take their place.
At about 16:00, Marshall Ney decided to attempt to break the centre right of the Allied line with his cavalry. 4,800 French horsemen charged up the hill and into the Allied infantry, who had formed themselves into squares to resist them. In all, 9,000 cavalry were involved in repeated attacks on the Allied squares but were unable to break any of them, including the Brunswickers, whom some British officers regarded as “shaky”. The Brunswick Hussars and Uhlans, who formed part of the 7th British Cavalry Brigade, made harrying attacks on the French whenever they retired to regroup. Eventually, Ney had no choice but to abandon the attacks.
The French capture of the fortified farm of La Haye Sainte had left a gap in the centre of Wellington’s line, and the Brunswick infantry were brought along to fill it. It was here that Napoleon sent one of two attacks by his Imperial Guard in a last gasp effort to break Wellington’s army. Faced with the veterans of the Grenadiers of the Middle Guard, the inexperienced Brunswickers broke from the line and "fell back in disorder", but rallied when they reached the cavalry reserve in the rear. The same fate befell the Nassau Infantry Regiment and two British battalions. Finally, the Guards were halted and thrown back when they were surprised by a flank attack from Dutch troops. The Brunswick Corps had recovered sufficiently to participate in the allied “General Advance” that swept the French army from the field. British sources give the number of Brunswickers killed in action that day as 154 with 456 wounded and 50 missing.
In the following days, they escorted 2,000 French prisoners back to Brussels and then marched on to Paris. They finally returned to Brunswick on 6 December 1815.

Days of War is a spiritual successor to old WW2 shooters. Primarily taking from and using the same maps, class system and weapons from Day of Defeat 1.3 and Day of Defeat: Source. Valve has decided not to continue this franchise to focus on its money makers like Counter Strike and DOTA. The competitive community has since died for this game but the public servers are still active. So, hopefully after over a decade this amazing game gets a proper sequel

NEW THREAD

So a while back there was a post in a thread about this and I think I can make it happen. For most new competitive games there is a match making system that decides your skill and pits you against players of the same skill. Since NW is an older game there is no match making system. So, I purpose a 10 man system to try and replace the missing match making system in NW. It will most likely start at 8 or 9 EST every night, once 10 people get in the TS Channel. There will be volunteers for team captains, if more than 2 volunteer there can just be a vote between the participants. After Captains are decided the teams will be picked dodge ball style 1 by 1. An admin will then give everyone the server info and the two teams will go into their own channels. For the first week or so I think we'll have an admin sit in during the pug's but after that if everyone is civil we can just have a system where if there's a problem an admin can be called in

This will probably be a joint thing between the 3eVolt and I, If you're interested in being an admin or helping me out with this you can steam me [3DM] FancyPants

Steam Group is https://steamcommunity.com/groups/NANWPUGs
there will be a meeting for this tomorrow at 6pm EST in the 7NA teamspeak 50.97.95.135:10457

Regiments / DeathWatch [NW | BFII]

The Death Watch—or Kyr'tsad in Mando'a—was a Mandalorian splinter group founded by Tor Vizsla, who opposed Jaster Mereel's
Supercommando Codex. Their primary goal was to return the Mandalorians to their ancient roots as galactic crusaders, and advocated the savage
raider mentality of past Mandalorians. The Death Watch fought Mereel's True Mandalorians for primacy during the Mandalorian Civil War,
manipulating a team of Jedi led by Master Dooku into wiping them out at the Battle of Galidraan. When the only surviving True Mandalorian,
Jango Fett, escaped from custody, he hunted and killed Tor Vizsla. The Death Watch scattered and seemingly disbanded until the beginning
of the Clone Wars when they reemerged under the leadership of Pre Vizsla, targeting Duchess Satine Kryze of the New Mandalorians.
Striking from their hidden base on Mandalore's moon, Concordia, they orchestrated several terrorist attacks on New Mandalorian cities
and Kalevala while garnering support from the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Eventually, when they allied themselves with Darth
Maul and the Shadow Collective, they successfully took control of Mandalore from Duchess Kryze. Maul then killed Pre Vizsla, and the
Death Watch splintered into two factions—those who gave their loyalty to Maul and those who refused to follow an outsider, led by Bo-Katan Kryze.
When Spar founded the Mandalorian Protectors as Mandalore the Resurrector, the Death Watch went into hiding again, under the leadership of
Lorka Gedyc, but resurfaced again during the Galactic Civil War, operating out of a base on Endor.

When Napoleon annexed the Kingdom of Holland, ruled until then by his brother Joseph Bonaparte, the Dutch Royal Guard merged with the Imperial Guard. The Hussars of the Dutch Royal Guard were converted into the new unit of horse-mounted Lancers, they were given a new scarlet-coloured uniform from that was responsible for their name, as well as a new set of weapons. They also received a new leader - Col. Baron Pierre David de Colbert-Chabanais under whom they were known properly as the 2nd Light Horse Lancers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard.
However, despite their previous posts in the Netherlands as the Royal Guards, they suffered enormous losses in the first invasion they participated in, which was that of Russia in 1812. While the devastation for the regiment at that particular conflict almost caused the entire dissolution of the newly formed unit, they would continue to serve in the military, but without many of the original Dutchmen, who were thought of as the pride of the regiment and who would be replaced by French soldiers.
The following year, in 1813, the Red Lancers were a distinguished regiment in a battle in Germany, and once again, in 1814, where they fought in the areas then known as the Low Countries.
The next year after that, in 1815, Napoleon returned from his exile. The same year, the Red Lancers fought at Waterloo.Even though Dutch-Belgian cavalry commander van Merlen, one of the most highly ranked and celebrated army officers of the regiment, lost his life at Waterloo, some of the original Dutchmen still existed in the ranks, and would serve as Red Lancers long after the 1815 victory.

Clans / 5. (Schutzstaffel) Panzer-Grenadier Division *Recruiting*
« on: May 21, 2015, 10:24:53 pm »

The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking was one of the elite Panzer divisions of the thirty eight Waffen SS divisions. It was recruited from foreign volunteers in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, the Netherlands and Belgium under the command of German officers. During the course of World War II, the division progressed from a motorised infantry formation to a Panzer division and served on the Eastern Front during World War II. It surrendered in May 1945 to the advancing American forces in Austria.

After the success of the Infanterie-Regiment "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler", SS-Verfügungstruppen-Division "Das Reich" and the SS-Division "Totenkopf" during the early war campaigns in Poland and the West, it was decided to expand the number of Waffen SS divisions. Due to the influx of foreign volunteers, particularly from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium, a decision was made to form a volunteer division of the Waffen SS under the command of German officers.

This formation, originally organised as the Nordische Division (Nr. 5), was to be made up of Nordic volunteers mixed with ethnic German Waffen SS veterans. To this end, the SS Infantry Regiment Germania in the SS Verfügungstruppe Division was transferred in late 1940 and used as the nucleus of a new division. In December 1940, the new SS motorised formation, was to be designated SS-Division "Germania", but after its formative period, the name was changed, to SS-Division "Wiking". in January 1941.

The division was formed around three motorised infantry regiments: Germania; formed mostly from ethnic Germans; Westland, consisting mainly of Dutch and Flemish volunteers; and Nordland, composed mostly of Danes, Norwegians and Swedes. Command of the newly formed division was given to Brigadeführer Felix Steiner, the former commander of the Verfügungstruppe SS Regiment "Deutschland".

After formation the division was sent to Heuberg in Germany for training and by April 1941, SS Division "Wiking" was deemed ready for combat. It was ordered east in June 1941, to take part with Army Group South's advance into the Ukraine during Operation Barbarossa, (the invasion of the Soviet Union).

In June 1941 the Finnish Volunteer Battalion of the Waffen-SS was formed from volunteers from that country. After training, this unit was attached to the SS Regiment "Nordland" in January 1942. About 430 Finns who were veterans of the Winter War served within the SS Division "Wiking" division since the beginning of Operation Barbarossa. In spring 1943, the Finnish battalion was withdrawn and replaced by the Estonian infantry battalion "Narwa."

The division was not ready for combat until 29 June 1941, one week after the launch of the operation. During its first action, near Tarnopol in Galicia, Ukraine, the division acquitted itself well. In August, SS Division "Wiking" was ordered to establish a defensive perimeter around a bridgehead across the Dniepr River. Despite determined attacks by the Red Army, the division held the line. Against stiffening resistance, the division continued its advance towards Rostov-on-Don. It took part in the heavy fighting for Rostov before being ordered back to the Mius River line in November. During 1941, the Heer officers in charge of the deployment of the SS Division "Wiking" were sceptical of its fighting abilities and so were hesitant to commit it to any major actions. As the division proved itself again and again in combat, it began to earn the grudging respect of the Heer commanders.

After successfully holding the line over the winter of 1941–42, SS Division "Wiking" was ordered to retake Rostov-on-Don and advance into the Caucasus, securing the region's vital oilfields. This attack was known as Operation Maus, and formed a part of Army Group South's offensive Case Blue, aimed at capturing Stalingrad and the Baku oilfields. Launched at the height of summer, the offensive was unexpectedly successful. Within six weeks, Rostov and the entire Don region had been captured, and SS Division "Wiking" was advancing deep into the Caucasus.

Originally founded on May 15th, 2015, the 5. SS is an in-game "realism" unit for the game Days of War (DoW). This unit is comprised mostly of members from the NW community. Lead by FancyPants or Hauptsturmführer Rutger Müller a veteran of Day of Defeat: Source, the 5. SS is a relaxed new realism unit aiming to help start the DoW realism and competitive scene. If you are interested in joining for both realism events and competitive (6v6) matches, please add Rutger Müller on steam on steam

Regiments / 3ème Régiment Étranger, Légion de la Irlandaise [NA]
« on: April 27, 2015, 06:43:09 pm »

The Irish Legion of Napoleon came into being, on paper at least, on 31 August 1803. Making it a reality took much longer. At the end of that year, the first officers, mostly Irish exiles, former rebels or United Irishmen, began to assemble at Morlaix in Finisterre, Brittany. It was to be over two years before the unit had a significant number of troops, and four years before the unit saw any action, and the unit whiled away the interim on tedious coastal or garrison duty. Dr Gallaher is at his best when describing these frustrating and traumatic formative years, when internal rivalry and political conflict was a major preoccupation, resulting in the death of one officer as the result of a duel, the transfer of the two most senior officers and the resignation of others. These years, as Dr Gallaher concedes, seriously damaged both the morale and reputation of the Legion.

The unit's initial purpose, to take part in the invasion of Ireland or anywhere in the British Isles, died as plans for that operation where shelved in the wake of Trafalgar. In 1807, a provisional battalion went into Spain. A further contingent followed in 1808, and the 3rd battalion in 1809, creating the basis of the Legion's two-battalion presence in the Peninsula which ended in 1811. In 1809, the first battalion, about 450 officers and men, was taken prisoner at the fall of Flushing, and a replacement battalion began assembling at Landau.

In 1813, two battalions took part in the Saxon campaign, but were lost in the disastrous attempt to cross the flooded Bober river in Silesia, when pressed by the Prussians, with as many as 1800 men dying or becoming prisoners. Upon the first Restoration, the unit concealed the regimental eagle, ready for Bonaparte's return, while declaring loyalty to the King. After further vicissitudes, the regiment was dissolved in September 1815. The number of Irishmen in the ranks was under 10% by 1813, and the final proportion of officers demonstrates the declining number of Irish so that they were only 8% among the junior officers.

Having been called officially over the years la Légion irlandaise, le Régiment irlandais, le 3e Régiment étranger (irlandais), le 7e Régiment étranger, the unit ended up Irish in name only, headed by a diminishing core of patriotic Irishmen, some of whom were deported for their alleged Bonapartist opinions. So few Irish soldiers passed into the new Foreign Legion just forming that they are hardly worth mentioning. It is the sad story of rebel exiles, a few of whom continued in the French army while the rest were dispersed around the world and they and their descendant have been lost to Ireland. Irish recruitment into the French army thus came to sad end and from then on the British Army, which had been recruiting the Irish in earnest since 1793, was now attracting them in hordes, so that on the eve of the Famine in 1845 more then 40% of the British Army was Irish while the population of Ireland had become less than 15% of the total population of the United Kingdom.

As the need for manpower for the Empire increased, the decision was made to expand the Irish Legion from a battalion sized unit into a regiment. Men were recruited first from Irish and Scottish Jacobite expatriates, whose families had been forced to flee following failed revolts. Prisoner of war camps were also a good source of soldiers. Recruiters for the Legion found that Irish Sailors who had been taken by press gangs, and forced into the British Navy before their capture, had no loyalty to King George. Once these men were taught the basic soldier skills, they proved good soldiers and hard fighters. Other men for the Legion came from German and Polish recruits -- forming a truly European force. While commands were given in French, the troops and officers spoke to each other in English or in their native tongues.

Regiments / 7th Line Battalion, Kings German Legion "Gott Mit Uns" [NA]
« on: February 05, 2015, 11:15:14 pm »

The King's German Legion (KGL) was a British Army unit of expatriate German personnel, 1803–16. The Legion achieved the distinction of being the only German force to fight without interruption against the French during the Napoleonic Wars.

The Legion was formed within months of the dissolution of the Electorate of Hanover in 1803, and constituted as a mixed corps by the end of 1803. Although The Legion never fought autonomously and remained a part of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars (1804–15), it played a vital role in several campaigns, most notably the Walcheren Campaign, the Peninsular War, and the Hundred Days (1815).

The Legion was disbanded in 1816. Several of the units were incorporated into the army of the Kingdom of Hanover, and became later a part of the Imperial German Army after unification in 1871. After the occupation of Hanover by Napoleonic troops the Convention of Artlenburg, also called the Convention of the Elbe, was signed on 5 July 1803 and formally dissolved the Electorate of Hanover. Consequently, the Elector's army was disbanded. Many former Hanoverian officers and soldiers fled the French occupation of Hanover to Britain; George III, the deposed Elector of Hanover, was also King of the United Kingdom. The same year, Major Colin Halkett and Colonel Johann Friedrich von der Decken were issued warrants to raise a corps of light infantry, to be named "The King's German Regiment". On 19 December 1803, Halkett's and von der Decken's levies were combined as a basis of a mixed corps (includes all arms: mounted, infantry, artillery) renamed the King's German Legion. The KGL infantry were quartered in Bexhill-on-Sea and the cavalry in Weymouth, Dorset. Some units were involved in a street fight in Tullamore, Ireland with a British Light infantry unit in the so-called Battle of Tullamore. The number of Officers and Other Ranks grew over time to approximately 14,000, but during the 13 years of its existence, close to 28,000 men served in the Legion at one time or another. It saw active service as an integral part of the British Army from 1805–1816, when its units were disbanded.
