1st Foreign Legion

The 1st Foreign Legion is a multi-national regiment for Napoleonic Wars, we will however be going to events for other mods and games. This regiment is intended to be a disciplined and mature group for those intending to be involved in proper formation, however outside of events we will be your standard laid-back and fairly relaxed regiment. I only ask that no one in the regiment's actions interfere with events or others and that they respect the rules of the brigade, division, and army we are in. If you want to join the regiment or think it might be the right fit for you, feel free to add me and message me on my Steam.

The regiment does have a minimum attendance requirement wherein you're permitted to decide a single day that is mandatory for you to go per week as to provide a steady attendance regardless. Most weeks we will attempt to attend vanilla Napoleonic Wars events on Saturday and Sunday, Iron Europe on Saturdays, and North and South on Fridays.

History

The French Foreign Legion was created by Louis Philippe, the King of the French, on 10 March 1831 from the foreign regiments of the Kingdom of France. Recruits included soldiers from the recently disbanded Swiss and German foreign regiments of the Bourbon monarchy. The Royal Ordinance for the establishment of the new regiment specified that the foreigners recruited could only serve outside France. The French expeditionary force that had occupied Algiers in 1830 was in need of reinforcements and the Legion was accordingly transferred by sea in detachments from Toulon to Algeria.

The Foreign Legion was primarily used, as part of the Armée d'Afrique, to protect and expand the French colonial empire during the 19th century, but it also fought in almost all French wars including the Franco-Prussian War, World War I and World War II. The Foreign Legion has remained an important part of the French Army and sea transport protected by the French Navy, surviving three Republics, the Second French Empire, two World Wars, the rise and fall of mass conscript armies, the dismantling of the French colonial empire, and the loss of the Foreign Legion's base, Algeria.

History

On 5 April 1755, His Majesty's Marine Forces, fifty Companies in three Divisions, headquartered at Chatham, Portsmouth, and Plymouth, were formed by Order of Council under Admiralty control. Initially all field officers were Royal Navy officers as the Royal Navy felt that the ranks of Marine field officers were largely honorary. This meant that the furthest a Marine officer could advance was to Lieutenant Colonel. It was not until 1771 that the first Marine was promoted to Colonel. This attitude persisted well into the 1800s. During the rest of the 18th century, they served in numerous landings all over the world, the most famous being the landing at Bellisle on the Brittany coast in 1761. They also served in the American War of Independence, being particularly courageous in the Battle of Bunker Hill led by Major John Pitcairn.

In 1788 a detachment of four companies of marines, under Major Robert Ross, accompanied the First Fleet to protect a new colony at Botany Bay (New South Wales). Due to an error the Fleet left Portsmouth without its main supply of ammunition, and were not resupplied until the Fleet docked in Rio de Janeiro midway through the voyage. One scholar has claimed that the Marines deliberately spread smallpox among Australia's indigenous population in order to reduce its military effectiveness, but this is not corroborated by contemporaneous records of the settlement and most researchers attribute the indigenous smallpox outbreak to other causes.

In 1802, largely at the instigation of Admiral the Earl St. Vincent, they were titled the Royal Marines by King George III. The Royal Marines Artillery (RMA) was formed as a separate unit in 1804 to man the artillery in bomb ketches. These had been manned by the Army's Royal Regiment of Artillery, but a lawsuit by a Royal Artillery officer resulted in a court decision that Army officers were not subject to Naval orders. As RMA uniforms were the blue of the Royal Regiment of Artillery they were nicknamed the "Blue Marines" and the Infantry element, who wore the scarlet uniforms of the British infantry, became known as the "Red Marines", often given the semi-derogatory nickname "Lobsters" by sailors. During the Napoleonic Wars the Royal Marines participated in every notable naval battle on board the Royal Navy's ships and also took part in multiple amphibious actions. Marines had a dual function aboard ships of the Royal Navy in this period; routinely, they ensured the security of the ship's officers and supported their maintenance of discipline in the ship's crew, and in battle, they engaged the enemy's crews, whether firing from positions on their own ship, or fighting in boarding actions. In the Caribbean theatre volunteers from freed French slaves on Marie-Galante were used to form the 1st Corps of Colonial Marines. These men bolstered the ranks, helping the British to hold the island until reinforcements arrived.

History

The 1st Foreign Legion; formed on 16 October, 1864 as the "1st Foreign Battalion." As part of the 'galvanized Yankees' program of the Confederate government initiated by Secretary of War James A. Seddon in September of that year after inquires from General Braxton Bragg to recruit foreign-born prisoners. The Honorable James Seddon had previously, as early as March of 1863, granted discretionary permission to commanders to recruit prisoners, but few had enlisted. This new 'galvanized Yankees' program had officially began on 12 October, 1864 and within the following week successfully recruited two regiments, the previously mentioned "1st Foreign Battalion" and "Brooks' Foreign Battalion."

Both regiments were made up of Union POWs, foreign nationals, and inmates drawn from the stockades of Florence, South Carolina; Salisbury, North Carolina; and Richmond, Virginia. However, by 1865, only one of these battalions remained, the "1st Foreign Battalion" which was increased to regimental size and renamed the "1st Foreign Legion." Another battalion had been drafted in December of 1864 on the 26th however, the "2nd Foreign Battalion" which was simultaneously raised to regimental size with the 1st, becoming the "2nd Foreign Legion."  The battalion that had failed, "Brooks' Foreign Battalion" had suffered massively from desertion and mutiny during its front-line service in McLaws Division which had came to an end on 18 December, 1864 when they were marched back to Florence, South Carolina and placed the men back in stockade.
