Brief History of the Regiment

The regiment, officially, was formed in 1700 in St. Petersburg during the Great Northern War. However, the origins of the regiment date back to 1683 in Peter's Toy Army. The regiment fought valiantly at the Battle of Narva alongside the Preobrazhensky Lifeguard Regiment. The regiment wore red stockings from then until 1740 as they "stood knee-deep in blood". It also took part in the battles of Noteborg, Nyenschantz, Lesnaya, and Poltava, as well as the Prut campaign of 1711.

In the Napoleonic Wars, the regiment served with distinction in several battles. It took part in the Battle of Borodino, where it fought against French heavy cavalry after the French captured the battery of Raevsky; as it was initially held in reserve. In 1813, the regiment also fought the battles of Lutzen, Bautzen, Kulm, and Leipzig. The regiment disbanded in 1918 as a result of the October Revolution.

History
Spoiler
The 19th Indiana was raised at Indianapolis, Indiana on July 29, 1861. It saw severe fighting in the 1862 Northern Virginia Campaign. In their first battle at Gainesville, the 19th supported the left flank of the embattled 2nd Wisconsin, fighting Confederates near the buildings of John Brawner's Farm.[1] They also fought in the main part of the Second Battle of Bull Run, where they, along with the rest of the Iron Brigade, were part of the rear guard covering the retreat of Union Army General John Pope.[2] During the subsequent Maryland Campaign, the 19th attacked Turner's Gap in the Battle of South Mountain, and then suffered considerable casualties battling Hood's Texas Brigade in the D.R. Miller cornfield at Antietam.

During the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, the 19th pushed a part of James J. Archer's Confederate brigade off McPherson's Ridge, and then stubbornly defended the heights later in the day before withdrawing to Seminary Ridge. When the I Corps retreated to Cemetery Hill, the Iron Brigade and the 19th Indiana were sent over to nearby Culp's Hill, where they entrenched. They saw comparatively little action the rest of the battle. The regiment later served that year in the Bristoe and Mine Run Campaigns and in 1864 during the Overland Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg.

The regiment was amalgamated with the 20th Indiana Infantry on October 18, 1864

Commanding Officer's Note
Spoiler
As of March 11th, 2016, the 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment will once again become active. I apologize for the inactivity on my part, as I have been very busy with schoolwork. It sucks up a lot of my time, especially since I am in all advanced classes. I plan to become active again starting today and over the weekend, despite schoolwork.

Also, the regiment forum page will be updated regularly as of today. A Steam community is to be established for the regiment, as one had not been previously utilized due to the regiment's inactivity. Also, a regiment website will be in the works.

Finally, I wish to address recruitment. As of March 11th, recruitment is open. Previously, recruitment had not been taken into account due to inactivity. Officer spots will also be open to those who submit an application and pass, which is to be posted on the regiment website once it is created.

Best regards,
Colonel Doge, Commanding, 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry

The War of the States

Relive the Civil War; the war that tore the United States in half .

A Nation Divided is a forum game similar to the Roll to Dodge series. In this game, you will create you character (They can be historical people, the character must be accepted by the gamemaster to be able to use it) and then the game will progress through the war. You will have to make choices and commit to actions and scenarios that occur due to other events. National events, such as elections, assassinations, etc. will be posted in bold by the gamemaster (me). These will effect how the game progresses. For example, if an important commander is killed in battle, troops under him will be effected by decreased morale. Also, is a government official is killed or dies of natural causes, the entire nation that he served will be effected in a positive or negative way.

Characters should be logical and sensible, and will have their strengths and weaknesses. For example, if a character who is created who is a higher rank, and excels at defensive strategy, then that character may fall back in offensive strategy, as was the case for most commanders. The gamemaster has the right to void (or ignore/delete) any actions that are not relevant to the circumstance, or would've never happened. Characters can be promoted from their current rank by their commanding officer, but it MUST be with good reason if that commanding officer is player-occupied. Otherwise, the gamemaster will give out occasional promotions to characters who realistically and historically could've been promoted for their actions or abilities. Female characters ARE allowed to masquerade as males. This game attempts to historically recreate the period, and since this was something that happened, it will be allowed, but to an extent. If the gamemaster sees that the ability to use female characters is being abused, they will be banned from the game.

Players can be either Union or Confederate. Foreign Intervention is not allowed, although foreign observers are. Observers may not lead men into battle, as this was not their role. They merely watch the fighting, and hang around the generals. Most of the time, they were assigned to a general's staff. For example, Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Freemantle of the British Coldstream Guards was assigned to Lieutenant General James Longstreet's staff. He did not actually assist Longstreet or any of the sort, but he did observe. The following will be the same for in-game observers.

When an event occurs, and a character reacts, the gamemaster will roll a dice, and depending on what the dice lands on, the results will be different.

Brigadier General James Longstreet
Spoiler
Appearance (What your character looks like. A picture would be nice):

Background: James Longstreet (January 8, 1821 – January 2, 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War and the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his "Old War Horse." He served under Lee as a corps commander for many of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, but also with Gen. Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. Biographer and historian Jeffry D. Wert wrote that "Longstreet ... was the finest corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia; in fact, he was arguably the best corps commander in the conflict on either side."

Longstreet's talents as a general made significant contributions to the Confederate victories at Second Bull Run (Second Manassas), Fredericksburg, and Chickamauga, in both offensive and defensive roles. He also performed strongly during the Seven Days Battles, the Battle of Antietam, and until he was seriously wounded, at the Battle of the Wilderness. His performance in semiautonomous command during the Knoxville Campaign resulted in a Confederate defeat. His most controversial service was at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he openly disagreed with General Lee on the tactics to be employed and reluctantly supervised the disastrous infantry assault known as Pickett's Charge.

He enjoyed a successful post-war career working for the U.S. government as a diplomat, civil servant, and administrator. However, his conversion to the Republican Party and his cooperation with his old friend, President Ulysses S. Grant, as well as critical comments he wrote in his memoirs about General Lee's wartime performance, made him anathema to many of his former Confederate colleagues. His reputation in the South further suffered when he led African-American militia against the anti-Reconstruction White League at the Battle of Liberty Place in 1874. Authors of the Lost Cause movement focused on Longstreet's actions at Gettysburg as a primary reason for the Confederacy's loss of the war. His reputation in the South was damaged for over a century and has only recently begun a slow reassessment
Attributes Explained: Longstreet was seen as a good defensive commander, and was always under the opinion that the idea was to conduct a defensive campaign wherever possible. He was not in favor of staying in Gettysburg during the battle, and proposed to flank the Union army, which was denied. He was a good commander, who his troops respected. He had the air of a good commander around him, and gave a good vibe to his troops.

Just before the Civil War, he organized Hungarian, Czech and German recruits at Chicago from the city athletic and social clubs into a militia company named ‘Lincoln's Riflemen’ that merged into Frederick Hecker’s 24th Infantry Illinois. They mustered into Federal service July 8, 1861, with Mihalótzy appointed lieutenant colonel. He became colonel when Hecker returned to the State to organize the 82nd Illinois. The 24th Illinois served with distinction at Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and the battles of the Atlanta campaign.
