Historical Reenactment / Re: Let's discuss: Reenacting!
« on: August 20, 2019, 02:43:33 am »
Have y'all ever lost interest in reenacting? I was really into it in high school but after being in college for a few years I've lost interest. At least in my area, it's always the same events with little variety. Also the weekends in the first and discomfort got old for me. Many of my friends are still in it though and I want to get back into the hobby once I finish school.

At one point I was fortunate enough to have had Pointblank, Coconut, DarthJezus, Ramzer, GlMan, and Zach Attack in my regiment. The 1stFKI had a rank of Gefreiter for senior enlisted members. Whenever we were in a tight spot tactically our strategy way either to throw them all at the enemy for the rest of the regiment would flank around or regroup. My favorite is when I could have the rest of the regiment on a wall during a siege and only have to leave them to defend the gate. They made my job allot easier!

5:30 shows many of them holding the gate against multiple large enemy regiments while the rest of our regiment was able to hold the walls. --

I'm surprised that Pepper from the 1stPLG is not on this list. Never in my years of playing in the community at its height had I seen a light cavalry regiment as skilled oasthem. More importantly, the culture of their regiment encouraged members to become elite while maintaining a flat leadership structure and a casual environment.

I'm also surprised to see no mention of the 1st Eat Prussian Infantry (1stEPI) on this list. While most regiments are essentially a cult of personality around their commanders, the 1stEPI was able to change leaders every year yet still maintain its culture and skill. They're also arguably the founders of the NA community.

While culture is hard to quantify and observe from the outside, I believe the best leader I've ever met in terms of community building is Oscar of the 33e (33rd, 33te, etc).

Community / Re: What would you expect from a regiment?

Consistent qualities I've seen of regiments that have stood the test of time are.

  • Humble regiment leaders who put the culture of the wellbeing of their members ahead of their own ego.
  • A community that encourages, but does enforce, it's members being active in the community outside of events.
  • Where members are not peer pressured to stay in the regiment if they think they would have more fun in another.
  • That acts professional when interacting with other regiments both in and out of events.
  • Where discipline during events is a natural part of the regiment's culture.

If you ever want to hear about the early history of the NA community in Mount and Musket. It was a really interesting time with the whole community being on the same teamspeak and going to the same single event each week. Everybody knew each other and reputation and politeness were very important.

Mount and Musket
The whole NA community shared a single teamspeak. http://22nd.eu
Back when there was only a single NA linebattle once a week.

Napoleonic Wars
Being in army battles where I would be on whispers with Pepper of the 1erPLG and OScar of the 33e. Combined arms strategy.

This was a fun post to read. Really brings back my memories of so many fantastic leaders I had the privilege of playing with (and against) when I was active in this community.

I'll be first to say 1v1's were never my forte nor my interest. For all my perceived ability I was never good at outflanking an enemy line in a 1v1 setting. Many of my members, myself included, were reenactors drawn to the large-scale public linebattles. We strove for historical authenticity and were far more attracted to large-scale drill and tactics than individual skill. There I felt we performed our best and had the most fun. That's where we found NW to be unique and most exciting to us. If this is a contest of 1v1 leadership I'd certainly be near the bottom.

We did enjoy 1v1 success in the first year of NW when I lead the 1stFKI but that was far more a testament to the skill and dedication of members like Mack, Coconut, Pepper, and many other members who went on to do awesome work in the NW community.

To be honest, commanding in events is the easy part. The hard part of being a leader in this game is putting your community's needs and wishes ahead of your own. The role of a leader in this game is to give their members a good time. Promoting community outside events, recruiting new members, and showing yourself to be a mentor and a friend. That's where I found NW to be exhausting -  and rewarding.

I failed many times though. There were times I allowed my own ego and personal metrics for success silence others. Many times friends of mine felt compelled to leave my regiments and form there own. Pepper and IceArmy left to form the 1erPLG. Mack left to form the 9y. In the end, I'm very glad they did since they (and their fellow officers) both went on to establish fantastic regiments. These failures taught me life lessons and allowed me to grow as a leader and a person. Would these failures, rooted in my sometimes inability to change the direction of my community, knock me down this list?  I can't decide.

And that's perhaps the core of the philosophy I developed over leading regiment in Mount and Musket and NW. There is no single quantifiable metric to state that X leader is better than Y leader. What are your most fond memories of this game? Mine certainly arent the line battles, it's the fond memories of playing games with my friends. The regiment leader's job is to be humble and foster a community and a safe space for their members to thrive in. I can't think of how you'd put that on a list.

Got to reenact for the first time in a while last weekend. Some friends and I are starting a campaigner unit next year for ACW. We'll be portraying the 6th US Regular Infantry in 1862. It's allot of fun doing group research on an impression.
