Title: The Fort From Glory
Post by: SCREAMING_EAGLES on February 24, 2013, 12:30:13 am
Just a thought but would that not be a super map to make from the movie Glory. It features dunes on the right, open beach in the middle and nothing but sea on the left. It would of course be a siege map too. just a thought, also pos any other map ideas from movies, books, and that thing we call the interweb

Well your basis of making a map is based on seeing a movie with a vague description added to it.

This is a big reason nobody will take you seriously.

In fact, you are the dumbass, posting a redundant thread with no purpose, the game is too early in it's stages and donators only have their voices heard.

I agree nipplestockings. Everyone calm the hell down, i believe the fort from that movie (correct me if im wrong) is fort wagner. Im sure that if this game has a siege type map that this will most likely be in the game. I think it would be pretty cool, maybe even some boats, but im not sure how historically accurate this game is gonna aim to be.

You read me speaking my thoughts to an idiot who has seen a movie and posted a random thread, donators are the only people who have opinion, it's a my response to stupid threads. I don't in particular like spam. I'm curious where FSE has been criticized for being hostile to new members.

Menelaos, SCREAMING_EAGLES may make suggestions in this area if he wishes. However, it states in the board info that posts here are less likely to be given the full attention of the Dev team, as they can only look at so much and therefore the Donators board takes priority.

SCREAMING_EAGLES, it's a nice idea. You might want want to try an find some other source material to back up the idea - any maps, images or accounts you can find (I presume it's based on an actual battle?), and posting them up in the OP.

Now lets all keep this friendly, please.

It's okay, some people are hateful spirits. I think Fort Wagner would be cool to add. It's a known siege due to 'Glory', so it'd be good commercialization on FSE's part.

Plus you could show an all(well, mostly)-black regiment! That'd certainly be a change from the norm.

So yeah, it'd be a great idea.

I thought it was an amazing movie. It's obviously based on the real 54th Massachusetts; The shit they had to go through to finally be recognized not only as soldiers, but as people, was truly amazing. It wasn't until they formed the vanguard of the Federal attack on Fort Wagner that they were truly commemorated. It's a great movie to watch if you want a history lesson, however don't look too much into it for uniform accuracy, prop accuracy, etc.

I only liked Glory because of the actor who played Gould Shaw, Matthew Broderick (great actor, by the way), and the excellent visualization of the story I read a lot about back when I was in high school.

Well, quite frankly, if we make a video of their charge as an official ad (using beta-players or something) that will DEFINITELY get a lot of views and attention, also from ACW hubs. Could be well-worth it.

Yea, I agree. Here's the assault on Fort Wagner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22AKunA1_Bw), from "Glory!"

I find it rather funny when people describe the 54th's charge up the ramparts as a slaughter, especially the way it's depicted in Glory. 29 men were killed in the battle, more men (42 to be precise) died in their first engagement which was a small skirmish with Confederate troops in South Carolina. I don't consider 29 men to be heavy or even moderate casualties.

As well as 52 missing, which can easily be considered to be dead.

Deserting where to?

They weren't wounded, because they didn't show up in the lists as such. Nor as taken prisoner.

Sorry if am wrong as my knowledge on this war is limited, but weren't blacks/former slaves executed when taken prisoner? If thats the case the 'missing' can quite easily be explained.

On another note, why not make a custom map for the N&S mod and play that while BCoF is still developing? If they haven't already that is.

There was a Fort/Battery Wagner map for an unrelased mod I worked on a while back, as some may already have seen. I don't have any screens of the map itself, but an image showing the fort model seems to have survived. The tower is not really accurate though, but the map itself was awesome. The Union troops were to charge across the sand dunes against the fort, in the background at sea there were gunboats and ironclads, providing not always accurate support fire for the attacking force. A waterfilled ditch with fraise/abatis, sharpened sticks was placed in front of the walls. Needless to say, this fort would be a tough position to capture! Here's an image of the fort model:

A cannon that would have been used by the fort's defenders:

Another gun, the rare Whitworth breechloader, intended to be used on the Gettysburg map, not sure if the real gun-carriage was painted in green or grey though:

Your knowledge from seeing a bad movie has benefited us all, thank you. 5 star post here.

Actually, while Glory does have many historical inaccuracies, the Second Battle of Fort Wagner is not really one of them. The description of the ground over which the 54th led the assault is accurate (even though the direction of the attack is wrong due to lighting requirements), as are the defences (if you look at surviving photographs you will see).
