Title: British Army - Anyone here currently serve / has served?
Post by: Macca on June 19, 2016, 02:55:31 pm

Afternoon gents.

If you haven't served in the British Army or any other armed forces then you may as well not bother reading the rest as this is directed for any chaps who have been or are in the British Army but yeah.

If anyone around this shithole has served or whatever, do drop a comment. I'm interested to see what regiments / corps you served with and where you did your Phase 1 training.

Oh, and if you attended AFC Harrogate as a Junior Applicant (16-17) then let me know. Heading there in September. Anyone who's served in the armed forces of any other country feel free to drop a comment.

I'm assuming you mean regulars rather than reserves?

No no, reserves too. They go through the same training and so on after all.

Not really-it's become very condensed for Reserves (was when I did it at least). They basically wanted to get the numbers up to 30,000 as that was the commitment Cameron made. I was at Pirbright so can't tell you much about Harrogate.

How long is your guys's basic training? And I guess AIT? (advanced individual training)? depending on your MOS

Basic training for Reserves is now around 3 weeks, referred to as Phase 1. Phase 2 advanced training depends on what unit you're with.

I had my place at Harrogate for a long time before dropping out, my step brother, uncle, grandfather and great grand father have all served though.

I was junior entry for Royal Anglians (My Uncle/Step brother are in it currently). And Grandfather/Great grandfather both Royal Welsh.

Come for a run in Ippy sometime instead of all those parties ay;) Saying that, if you need a good running club there is one in Martlesham, it is by the gym.

I don't plan on joining anymore though. I have a few mates at Harrogate atm if you want me to ask them anything drop me a Facebook message.

Will do mate, expect one soon.

And Karth, training time all depends on what you're wanting to join. If you're a junior entry wanting to go into the infantry, Royal Armoured Corps/Household Cavalry, Royal Artillery and some Royal Logistics Corps roles then Phase 1 training is 49 weeks where as roles such as the Royal Army Medical Corps, Signals, Engineers etc their phase 1 is only 23 weeks but has a longer Phase 2 training.

So yeah, it's all down to what you want to join really. Providing I 100% get a placed at Harrogate in September then my training will be 49 weeks as I've applied for the infantry.

Na Anglians are good. If you actually have a qualification go for Engineers though, or REME.. Can't believe I have just recommended REME to someone - anyway moving on. They're both good for post-Army employment. If you've just basic qualifications you'll be a grunt for quite some time. My friend has been a Royal Anglian for like 5-6 years and is now a LCpl, mainly because he only has GCSE's. So don't waste a qualification if you have. And I'll fb you it if it pops up again, I can't remember the name though.

I know they are mate. My first choice on the application was Royal Regt of Fusiliers with Royal Anglians and Royal Logistics Corps as second and third choices. My GCSE's aren't bad at all, C's and above which as far as I'm concerned is good. I was looking into both REME and the Engineers though but settled with infantry and logistics. If being a front line soldier goes to shit then there's always Logistical Supply Specialist with the RLC as my back up.

Yeah and if need be you can easily switch caps from infantry, and that could help with promos if you switch to a less combat oriented reg. I was in REME C Coy for cadets lol. You can go para signals @ Colchester, that is very good (get ur wings, close to home), and can go special forces from there too. (Not that you would, fucking road man)

Bundeswehr > British Army

banter
FDF > Bundeswehr

Our planes, tanks and other equipment work.

[/Banter]Honestly, this forever happening "A is better than B" contesting between military units, branches and nations is always useless as they are prepared against different tasks or threats.
[close]

On the most serious side: Just interested, sorry for being part of the topic hijacking here.

How long is the usual reserve age in the UK and will they get called in for additional service later on? Or are they like our Local Defence Troops so they are just kind of voluntary militia?

Too lazy to google around and would be fun to hear personal experiences.

Here we're conscripted at age of 18 and usually serve from age of 19-20 and most get at-least 6 months of branch and basic training (can be up to 12 months in some tasks + NCO and Ofc. Cadet tasks). After they have been trained they might be called for refreshing training until age of 50 (or something near that) when they are removed from reserves. That usually happens much earlier though because we have steady amount of new personnel.

Can't do that, got to uphold the family tradition, and the standards are still twice the army's. I think the new commandant will help as well as if Trump gets pres he will increase the budget. Also not infantry but Forward Observer/JTAC

Well the basis which most people go by or are most referenced would be the PFT/CFT, shooting quals, and longer training. despite sometimes training at or with other branches (example most arty Marines go to Ft. Sill due to the low budget of the Marines) Im not saying the quality of life is better, not saying Marines are smarter or That they have better benefits or that Army Infantry isn't worth anything. Just the two branches as a whole are pretty different Marines seem to sell the Pride and Discipline aspect of the military (I.e. Blood stripes, and pinning along with other fun hazing initiations) Although the Army has better SF and also has many avenues to pursue better training and other high speed shit. with all of these benefits Ill say In a combat situation when you need to kill the enemy usually a basic Marine Infantry Company as a whole would probably preform better than a basic Army Infantry Company. They're more alike than any other branch and both do their job

Not really getting where your coming from, are you saying they should just be Infantry without all of the shit they have now like air assets and artillery? in WW2 they were expanded because they didn't have enough manpower to fight their own theater. They are still the smallest branch by far with 20% of the manpower compared to the army (Active and Reserve)

Talking about US Military on British Army thread... How American

I'd rather it not be politics based but more of a place for different nationalities to discuss similarities and differences of their experiences. Also hopefully a sort of mutual respect and acknowledgement for each other's militaries and warriors whatever their governments agenda is

Yeah, I meant on the more technical side. There was some technical discussion prior for example about AA-missile systems in the topic before and of course discussion about the national service and how people felt about it. I think such should be fine here as well.

The british army is so outdated. They still use lee enfields and shitty variations of the sten gun. Even their more modern guns are garbage, bulpup shit stains on weapon design. If they had been less arrogant and gone with foreign weapons that actually work, then maybe they wouldn't have lost in afghanistan.

This along with their low requirements and training are the reason why they lost in ww2 and had to be saved by their own ex colony. UK used to be an OK country, but now it's full of incompetent asshats. Just look at brexit.

You can probably trace this problem right down to the root of the collapse of the british empire.

A shoe is an item of footwear intended to protect and comfort the human foot while doing various activities. Shoes are also used as an item of decoration. The design of shoes has varied enormously through time and from culture to culture, with appearance originally being tied to function. Additionally, fashion has often dictated many design elements, such as whether shoes have very high heels or flat ones. Contemporary footwear varies widely in style, complexity and cost. Basic sandals may consist of only a thin sole and simple strap. High fashion shoes may be made of very expensive materials in complex construction and sell for thousands of dollars a pair. Other shoes are for very specific purposes, such as boots designed specifically for mountaineering or skiing.

Traditionally, shoes have been made from leather, wood or canvas, but are increasingly made from rubber, plastics, and other petrochemical-derived materials.

Aren't the dragoons the Tankers now?

Side note: I think it's cool the british army kept the names of (some) cavalry units.
In the Netherlands, we also still have 3 Hussar regiments.
The scout-units are still the hussars and is still called Cavalry (light cav) and the tanks were part of the cavalry, too (Heavy cav), distinguished by their black barets.

The British Army is one that is extremely proud of unit history and traditions. As a result though the rolls, duties and equipment of units have changed and many units have been lost to amalgamations the names still live on a testimony to their past. A great example of this is our reservist light tank units have kept the age old name of "Yeomanry"

Armoured Regiments
Queen's Royal Hussars
King's Royal Hussars
Royal Tank Regiment
Royal Wessex Yeomanry

Armoured Cavalry Regiments
Household Cavalry Regiment
Royal Dragoon Guards
Royal Lancers

Light Cavalry
1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards
Royal Scots Dragoon Guards
Light Dragoons
Royal Yeomanry
Queen's Own Yeomanry
Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry

The dragoons aren't tankers anymore, they used to use the Scimitar vehicle, but switched in the last two years, for Army 2020 plan, to Jackal Mk2s. Which I can't wait to be trained on.

Very nice. I hope to get an FO or JTTAC position myself after my first position. You cannot directly apply for JTAC/FO in the Dutch army, so I will have to do two or three years as platoon commander first.

Yeah at first you get FO/Naval Gun Fire Liason and then you can later get certified as JTAC.

I like to watch things go boom :)

Just got a Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship to some schools. The US government pays for my full tuition in exchange for my serving as an officer for four years after college.

Also still waiting to hear back from the US Military Academy. I have congressional nominations and all the right qualifications, but nothing is ever certain with service academies.

Regardless I'll undergo light military training in college and join as an officer after I get a degree.

I'm not exactly sure yet. I've read quite a bit and spoken to some officers. The officer that guided me through the whole process was a lietenant colonel in the Field Artillery, which is the one I'm leaning towards right now.

If you joke or brag about how many you have killed, there must be something extremely wrong with you.

I'm am about to graduate from 68W (Combat Medic Specialist) AIT in about 3-4 weeks. Going into the field for a 2 week FTX at Camp Bullis where we pretty much train battle drills and train TC3 (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) all day everyday. I also just received my promotion to E-2 PV2 and I expect to be a E-3 Private First Class in about 6 months.

Found out my duty station a while back which will be the 82nd Airborne Division (http://www.bragg.army.mil/index.php/units-tenants/82nd-airborne-division) that is stationed at Fort Bragg, NC.  ;D

Current Australian Army Cadet NCO and in the middle of an application into the Canadian Army, hopefully infantry. Full time. Royal 22e Regiment ''The Van Doos'', Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR), or the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

My grandfather was an artilleryman and later Warrant Officer First Class (the highest achievable rank for enlisted men in the Australian Army). Served Vietnam and the Malayan Emergency. 105 BTY, 1st Field Regt and 4th Field Regt, RAA in Vietnam. Served 40 years including said conflicts. Died 2004. A true blue patriot. Master at the at the time new laser guided artillery systems and taught it at the old Royal Australian School of Artillery on North Head, Manly.
