I suppose it's not uncommon for a soldier to do that in extreme cold weather. He unties his pokalem (off duty fatigue cap, as you see here) to warm his ears and puts his shako on top of it. So, yes I'd say the skin perfectly plausible if you try to go for the winter look.EDIT: Some more usefull examples: This and This
