Division History
Coppens Division is comprised of the 1st, 3rd, 28th Louisiana Infantry Regiments, 3rd Louisiana Zouaves Battalion, 1st Louisiana Cavalry Regiment, and lastly, the 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery. The Division formed in Southern Louisiana. Coppens hailing from Lafayette, Louisiana, he formed the 3rd Louisiana Zouaves Battalion while other units were mustering. Instead of the historical regiments listed joining their respective divisions, they would form up with Coppens and his Battalion. Early in the War of Northern Aggression, the 1st Louisiana Regiment and the 3rd Louisiana Zouaves Battalion was dispatched to the Eastern Theater under the Confederate Army of the Potomac, however they were not a major role in the Battle of First Manassas, as that title goes to Colonel Jackson and his unit. After the Army of Northern Virginia was formed on October 22, 1861, the 1st Louisiana Infantry Regiment, the 3rd Louisiana Zouaves Battalion, and the rest of the Division was transferred to the Western Theater. The Division's first battle in the Western Theater would be the Battle of Fort Henry, Fort Donelson coming shortly after. The next major battle the Division would participate in, would be the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee. A Very bloody battle, the division would experience their largest amount of casualties up to that point, as the Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest engagement of any other previous battles within the war. While the Division was still in the Western Theater, the next major battle they would experience would be in northern Mississippi. This battle would be the Siege of Corinth. After the battle concluded, Coppens Division would be transferred back to the Western Theater, where they would participate in each campaign the Army of Northern Virginia. However, after the Gettysburg Campaign, the Division would be transferred back to the Western Theater and would participate in the battle of Chickamauga until the Battle of Nashville, where they would be transferred back to the Eastern Theater and would stay until the war concluded. Lastly, there was also a battle they participated in, called the Battle of Stones River, however, they were still technically under the Army of Northern Virginia. It was only a singular battle after the Battle of Fredericksburg before they transferred to the Western Theater. After the Battle of Stones River, they would march back to Virginia, where they would participate in the Chancellorsville Campaign.
