The UK (and therefore its colonies) was officially neutral throughout the war. Despite this, tensions between Great Britain and the EU states were strong because of several incidents at sea, including the Trent affair and setting the CSS Alabama service Confederate ship built in 1862 in Birkenhead in England. If the conflict had been escalating, Canada would have represented the next target of EU states.
