Uniting against the Islamic State is a good thing. However, let's not forget that in 2001, the US government used the terrorist attacks to legitimate their war against Iraq, which in return caused even more terrorism.

Afghanistan. Not Iraq. I know it's hard telling wars apart when you just use them to be edgy, but at least try to look informed.

Polls of the time showed that most U.S civilians thought Iraq was involved in 911.

The US didn't invade Iraq until March of 2003, sir. We invaded Afghanistan in October of 2001.

Hmm...would this thread be the place to discuss the "death of god" as it applies to the implosion of the human intellect through Nietzsche, or will discussion in this thread be limited only to religions and their characteristics?

I've noticed an interesting discussion of "truth" on this thread that appears to define truth as "a correspondence to empirical reality or the conclusion of an argument adhering to the rules of logic". Is this true? If so, how do you justify the being of truth?

If not, what is "truth"?

Discussion of morality without some sort of absolute standard, be it God or otherwise, is inherently pointless. No meaningful moral discourse can exist in a completely relativistic society, for there is no "right" or "wrong".

If you want something to consider, ponder your morals and determine whether or not they have any weight in any argument whatsoever. Ask yourself, if you have no "God" or "categorical imperative", how you can condemn Hitler or Mao without something to point to as "morally good"?

If things are simply "morally good" because we say they are, then morality is arbitrary.

*Note that I don't necessarily advocate these views, but you guys could benefit from thinking on these topics*

Seems I've missed quite a bit. What's changed so dramatically so as to preclude reasonable political discourse on these forums?

Gentlemen, let's not forget that the conduct of the few cannot be used to dismiss the message of the majority. Despite Mr. Gray's extensive police record, one cannot say that he deserved death. Why should we, as citizens of this republic, allow law enforcement to be the final arbitrators of life and death once the threat has ended? The police should enforce the law and serve the community, while leaving punishment up to the courts and juries.

What we see in the riots of Baltimore encapsulates the pent up frustration of a community, escalating to violence where others would have discourse. Whether it is the unleashed anger of the voiceless or the opportunistic anarchist, however, no longer matters. The lives and property of innocent citizens are at risk with this violence, and all action should be taken to mitigate it. The violence of the few may incite the majority against the protesters, who require the majority's support to actually effect a change in the first place.

I sincerely hope that the situation in Baltimore returns to peaceful protest before matters get worse.

PS: Law enforcement should be respected, but to be respected also implies that you can be held accountable. Respecting law enforcement, necessary for order in this republic, does not mean that they are not also accountable for their actions.

Despite occupation in WWII and defeat in Indochina, the French have remained a force to be reckoned with over the course of the twentieth/twenty-first century.

Here are locations where the French military are currently deployed, according to wikipedia.

Saudi Arabia. The nation you're looking for is Saudi Arabia, the nation that contains the Islamic holy city of Mecca.

I think that he was using it more as a stereotype lel  :P

So was I.  ;)

Crimea river, if muslims can't handle their pedophile prophet being depicted in a slightly negative way then they should fuck off back to somalia.

What if I were to attribute everything Westboro Baptist Church does to the nature of the term Christianity and religion. That's not what I suppose you think your religion stands for.

I think we'd get a better response from this forum if we said that all atheists must also persecute religious individuals because of the actions of the USSR. I don't think this is what most atheists advocate for, though I could be wrong.

Examples of state atheism in communist Albania also exist.

We should probably focus on finding the root of extremism in the Middle East instead of bashing on all Muslims. Are their educational issues that can be addressed? Socioeconomic conditions conducive to violent confrontation? If so, how can we remedy or remove these issues?

I feel as though Paraguay and Australia* should be included on this thread somewhere, for the War of the Triple Alliance and Great Emu War* respectively.

I'm seeing quite a few logical fallacies (Fallacy of Composition, Argumentum ad populum, Historian's Fallacy) in this thread. Could you keep the trolling to a minimum? I can hear it upstairs.  :)

In the case you were being serious, carry on.

You need to make a distinction between hunting knives and assault knives if you want to ban one and not the other. What physical characteristics must necessarily be possessed by an assault knife that a hunting knife lacks? I am not concerned about what these objects are used for at this time, I am primarily concerned about any distinction between the two objects that would make our conversation a bit more accurate.

Assault knives typically look deadlier than regular knives, and their sole purpose is to stab little children. That's the difference

Quit triggering me you dumb aussie, I'm tired of listening to your bullshit fox news propaganda.

Pls no. Tumblr should stay in tumblr.

Wait, so what kind of knife was it? A hunting knife?

A high-capacity assault knife. Ban high cap assault knives

Which is why we need a definition of what constitutes an "assault knife" before we can ban them. Without a definition of the term or any regard for the possessions of individuals that may serve to further their livelihoods, we cannot move forward in attempting to remove some of the more dangerous knives from homes. How shall we differentiate between a hunter's knife and an "assault knife"?

Well we need hunting and kitchen knives atleast because they are neccesary to cut things such as vegetables and deer.  An assault knife is used to massacre innocent children.

If you think making a snide comment about gun safety is really an effective and diplomatic way of bringing up and discussing a larger issue after an event like this, than I don't know what to tell you.

This guy got famous by doing so
